What It Takes To Survive Navy RDC School - Where Boot Camp Instructors Train | Boot Camp

Recruit division commanders, known as RDCs, are the drill sergeants of the United States Navy. Before they train Navy recruits at boot camp, future RDCs must graduate from Continuation School, or C School, at Naval Station Great Lakes near Waukegan, Illinois, about 40 miles north of Chicago.
Business Insider spent four days at RDC C School to see how recruit division commanders are trained to instruct the next generation of sailors.
RDCs distinguish themselves from other Navy personnel with a red rope they wear around the left shoulder of their uniforms. They're responsible for training and mentoring Navy recruits during their time in boot camp.
During the 13-week C School course, RDC students learn how to motivate recruits, inspect their barracks, and lead them in physical training.
Although the Navy fell short of its recruitment goals in 2023, the branch shows no signs of dialing down the intensity recruits face during basic training. However, RDCs also learn how to implement the Navy's Warrior Toughness program, which provides recruits with tools to cope with the stress they experience during boot camp.

I am the Division Officer in the video. I would like to address some of the comments I have seen so far. The military as a whole has had difficulties hitting their recruiting numbers. That's the side effect of a volunteer military and has nothing to do with the caliber of individual joining. Not everyone wants to volunteer, but we appreciate those that do and are willing raise their hand and swear to defend our constitution. Same goes for RDCs. It is a difficult job with long hours. We hold C school students to a standard but ultimately, I would rather have someone competent that can train and mentor these recruits, instead of a meathead because they're good at PT. Also, if you think that how fast you can run is anywhere near as important as discipline and competency when it comes to operating in our technologically advanced war-space, then you are stuck in the past. Our foreign adversaries would not have any sort of upper hand just because they can do more push-ups. It doesn't matter which boot camp is "harder", as long as they get the results necessary to train the next generation to operate effectively in future conflicts.

This sounds like cope, the USA gave up on having healthy fit men in the armed forces. The average american citizen weighs 100kg. This looks like an absolute disaster and it does not bode well.
@shaheeneagle883
@shaheeneagle883 3 месяца назад
Do you think the Navy would ever increase the age limit at least up to 43?
@danielalcorn9761
@danielalcorn9761 3 месяца назад
@aleale6277 You're focusing too much on appearances and acting as though we're only recruiting obese men and women. While the military reflects the American population in some regards, those that need to be in peak physical condition for their jobs still are. So I struggle to see how this is indicative of the US losing an armed conflict due to current physical conditioning.
@dm-rj2zg
@dm-rj2zg 3 месяца назад
Sir, I think you make a good point about physical fitness. Most people who think the standards are falling dramatically seem to be judging purely off how people look; one thing I learned in boot camp is that how somebody looks doesn't always correlate to their physical ability as much as you'd think it would. Based on my (admittedly much more limited) experience, it seems like something which matters more is how far an individual is willing to push themselves, which stems from a good attitude and a willingness to tolerate pain and discomfort. In that sense, even if physical fitness is not as important as the ability to develop technical expertise, it still might be useful for figuring out who the "high performers" are going to be because I'd wager that there's going to be a lot of overlap between the people who are determined to push themselves physically and the people who are determined to excel in rate-specific expertise.

What’s funny is the same people on here talking nonsense are the same people who don’t even serve, people living in the past, or other service members in different branches. You talk about winning wars or how other countries are “this and that” yet, we can’t even come together and uplift each other. Instead, you want to down play your other fellow branches and say standards are not set in place. Most of you have become so jaded from what a standard is, based on these Hollywood movie images of what the military needs to be like in order to win. If you all were Olympic athletes you probably wouldn’t be in the service, that’s not what is needed to win. It’s being tactful, it’s having a warrior and “war ready” mindset, constantly improving and repetition. Each branch has a different, yet, vital role they play in order to protect this country. The same branches you spit on are the same young men and women who decided to make that sacrifice to serve and protect the freedom and countless liberties that you enjoy and take for granted. We’re quick to talk down on someone instead of bringing that person up with us. Everyone can continue to say what they want about what apparently is “more difficult” or “the standard” while the rest of us will continue to protect that right for you and work day and night standing the watch because we believe in selfless duty and service for others.

I’m seriously considering becoming an RDC one day. But I’ve only just begun my Navy journey. I think the benefits are definitely worth it as well as the memories. Honestly though I don’t know if I’d be a good leader where I am right now though😕

Wow, how are they out of shape??? What made them give up exercising or eating right? 😂😂😂
@PhotoFlaime

the food served on the ships is low quality, plus the 16 hour shifts a day on deployment make it hard to go to the gym and work out. the navy is low quality of life and high work hours. so that why they look like that.

@@PhotoFlaimeSad but true fact. Between regular job, watchstanding, and then having to get all the quals they push.. you either workout and sleep less, or just sleep the meager 4 hours you have

You can easily get an hour to do some body workouts underway. Mostly the out of shape ones are eating junk foods and playing videos games or watching movies when they aren't working. You can easily lose weight underway because they feed you small portions of food. The food isn't the best quality but you should know by now what's good to eat and what isn't.
