What It Was Like To Live At Versailles

During its heyday from 1682 to 1789, Versailles wasn’t just a palace - it was the center of France’s royal world. French royals, nobles, and state officials lived together in the sprawling palace complex. But despite the regal setting, everyday life for courtiers at Versailles was often stressful, regimented, and surprisingly unsanitary.

In case someone looks here for an answer : the whole purpose of versailles was to keep nobility on a leash after they tried to end royalty when louis xiv was a child and remembers very well the fear and starvation, the revolt was called 'la fronde'. The revolution was actually at first the revolt of a tird of the assembly against the other two (nobility and church) which were from the same families and always won the votes, of course. The 'tiers état' just wanted a representative parlement and a monarchy similar to england, not the king's head. Then the king louis xvi tried to flee to get help, that is because of that he then got executed. Sorry for my english... it's a multi-faced part of history, i tried my best

i read a book about it and they did have "toilettes"... or at least an official facility where they could deficate into a pot, but it was only in one place at the far end of one of the wings. not the best planning, but without plumbing, i think most of the people were also used to doing their business with a pot in their room... or wherever they needed to.
@LB-ou8wt
@LB-ou8wt 4 года назад
This is such a bad misconception. There were bathrooms. However at this time, without plumbing, the upper classes typically had chamberpots which would be emptied by servants. Sometimes you would have a small room to use the chamber pot, but many just used them within their room (they’d be emptied right away anyways).

I've visited the palace of Versailles and it's really hard to wrap your mind around just how massive this place really was. We were there for about 3 or 4 hours and only had time to go into about 5 or 6 rooms. I've also visited Shakespeare's hometown and his childhood home. Although he didn't reach his prime time of success until after his death, it's shocking to see just how lavish the lifes of royals really were/are. Even in comparison to people who were even incredibly well respected and admired for their contribution to art.

It was actually pretty good, depending on what part of the empire you were staying at. If you lived in any of the coastal provinces like Fujian or Guangdong, you ran the risk of being invaded by Japanese pirates (wokou) and would either be robbed, raped, murdered, or sold into slavery. If you lived in the north you ran the risk of being invaded by Mongols and Manchurians, similar results would follow. Your best option would be to live in the central part of the empire, but then you would be heavily watched and monitored by the emperor's imperial guard (jinyiwei) who would police you around.

At Versailles there were no children other than those of the Royal family. Nobles had to lodge their children in the village of Versailles or keep them home at their domains. The various offices awarded to the nobles were shared by quarter, so that four times as many nobles could have posts. So even if you were the carrier of the royal bedpan it was only 3 months a year. In his younger days Louis likes to hunt, so that courtiers who could ride and shoot had an advantage.

An important facet of Versailles court life was dance. You mention the frequent parties; many featured dance, of course. But, apart from the dance performances by the resident dance corps -- with whom Louis himself, an accomplished dancer, would perform -- balls attended by the courtiers consisted almost entirely of solo and couple choreographies by the courtiers, each in turn as all the others watched. Baroque dance is the ancestor of modern ballet, and is just as involved and difficult to master. So, a large part of how Louis kept his courtiers busy was for them to have to keep learning and practicing high-level dance skills. Their standing in court life strongly depended on their dance performance abilities.

I visited the palace of Versailles on a week long school trip to France when I was 13. I remember just how beautiful and lavish it was which jarred with the fact that our teachers had told us about the unhygienic toilet habits of it's residents. They didn't just go in chamber pots but would find a quiet corner or secluded cubby hole and relieve themselves right there! This along with all the animals doing the same thing, and the fact that the people didn't exactly wash regularly meant the palace reeked! Also I love this channel but the word courtier isn't pronounced like the brand Cartier, I wouldn't have mentioned it but he just wouldn't stop saying it in the video!

Yes, because at the time people were afraid of water and the diseases it could carry. Even doctors recommended not taking baths. It wasn't by lack of hygiene. On the contrary, Louis XIV used "dry washing" (la toilette sèche) which means getting his body rubbed with a towel and alcohol. Of course, he also used perfume. Nobles changed clothes several times a day and were especially careful about cleaning their hands, teeth and feet.

For the upper class, they were basically exclusively using chamber pots in the privacy of a little closet or their rooms, emptied by the servants, sometimes into similar cisterns. For servants, i would assume men peed outside if feasible. And for the rest either chamber pots as well or these public bathrooms (probably more for the men)

The amount of misinformation in this video is almost painful. The idea that courtiers were relieving themselves all over the place is just absurd and has been disproven so many times. Not only were there chamber pots, there were also precursors to the bidet, which allowed one to wash after you were done with your business. There was also bourdeloue available for women to use, which they did frequently due to their wide pannier making it easy to conceal. Did some guys whip it out and pee outside? Well duh, because literally all guys do that. Were people just shitting in corners of the most luxurious palace in Europe at the time? Absolutely not. Also, the lever/coucher weren't jobs the king and queen demanded the nobles perform. Louis XIV decided to strip a lot of practical power away from the higher ranking nobles, and in order to appease them after his move to Versailles (the middle of nowhere is a hard place to run a country from), he came up with the concept of lever/coucher. The idea was that if they had such direct, personal access to the king, he couldn't forget them. Most monarchs found this extremely intrusive and hated it, but it was what was expected, and an easy way to keep a lot of powerful people pacified.
