My Brother and I RANDOMLY planned a trip over 1,000 miles away from home with about 2 days to prep. Good thing Ive built a reliable van that's ready for the road!! It has a EJ20 Subaru engine, with a TY755 WRX Transmission with a 4:44 Subarugears gear kit installed. Its so much fun to drive. I get all kinds of looks, thumbs up, and the satisfaction of driving a vehicle that ive built myself. With no hotel cost or worrying about where to sleep, ive created something that will get me places I will never forget!!
The fuel mileage was a big reason I made this video, I just wanted to show people how good it is with this setup. It really is awesome, and is so reliable!

In Europe T3 is mostly upgraded with 1.9 tdi engine from golf mk3. Originally 1.6 diesel is not strong enough, but 1.9 tdi is having enough torque and ps so it drives perfect. Also if you have 1.6 diesel and you put 1.9 tdi it fits in it without problems, you don't have much problems with mounting, wires and so on. It consumes 6-7 liters per 100km.

Great Video. I just drove my 84 tin top with an EJ25 and stock Auto trans from California to Flagstaff AZ and back. The best mileage I saw was 20 and that's sitting at 65 mph from Laguna to Barstow which includes the Cajon pass at 3,777ft. After that I climbed up to 7500ft in flagstaff and did more like 70 mph and got around 19 mpg and then 16mpg really doing the climb into flagstaff. with the stock auto trans and 18 rims sitting on 235/45/18's i can do 70 mph at around 3850 rpm. I'm thinking about changing the diff gears out so that 70 is more like 3200 Rpm. I'm interested in your oil pressure at different rpm and what weight oil you are running.
@PostPros
@PostPros 3 года назад
Thanks! Yes you should totally change the gears out, you definitely have the power for it. The non locking torque converter will hurt you a little bit, but you’d 100% get better mileage, and it would be an easier, quieter drive!! I’m sure that 2,5L pulls you up them hills nicely!! Oil pressure on the highway, about 3,200rpm is like 4-4,5 bar/60-65psi.. it lives around there.. sometimes it seems a little higher, sometimes little lower, but I’d say that’s average.. at least that’s what my gauge says, which should be accurate, it’s all vdo stuff.. I use Rotella T6 5w-40 with a stock Subaru filter, I buy the filters on Amazon for a cheap price, usually a 4 pack. The oil is also cheap too, but it comes in a gallon, not 5L/Quarts. But my small car oil pan takes a gallon so it’s perfect!! All the turbo boys run the rotella, so I figured it would be good for me, and like I said it’s probably the cheapest synthetic.. Thanks for watching!! Keep me updated on the gears, I’d love to see how it drives with them🤙

I drove my 76 Westfalia with Subaru engine from DC to Taos, NM and it did great but I started overheating every twenty or so and had to keep stopping. It turned out to be a fuse on the cooling fan. A mechanic fix it for me so now that it is happening again, I'm not sure how to test what the issue is or how to fix it. Now the temp is climbing steadily even on a cloudy cool day when I get about 3 miles fro. home. Have you ever had this issue? My coolant is full (maybe slightly over full) my oil is good and it goes up hot really fast when I climb hills. Can't get in to see my mechanic for another two weeks and this is my daily driver. If you know anything about this, can you do a video? please? lol thanks
@PostPros
@PostPros 3 года назад
Your 76 had to be converted to water cooled because it was originally air cooled. My van is different and was watercooled from factory. I’ve seen some setups with the radiator under the van with a fan keeping it cool. If that’s the case the fan needs to work perfectly to keep the temps under control because the radiator is under the van vs in front and the wind keeping it cool. Definitely check out that fuse again!! Also the wires going to the fan, temp sensor…exc. coolant can’t really be too full, it’ll just spit out the excess. Definitely DONT get it too hot or you’ll cook your engine, you could drive short distances but WATCH IT.. Yes I’m willing to bet it’s your coolant fans🎉
@cherylasmith3492
@cherylasmith3492 3 года назад
@@PostPros Thank you! Yes, the radiator is under the bus. It was converted in 1998 or so with a Subaru Legacy engine. So I got it into a place that does tires/oil and they tested the fuses, which are located behind the back seat (now I know :)) And it was not a fuse BUT was a fan relay. So they replaced it. Weird how a fuse and a relay for the same fan has gone out both within the last year. But at least now I know how to check it. Thanks for your response! Love the videos. ✌️
@stevemagnuson7051
@stevemagnuson7051 2 года назад
@@cherylasmith3492 the relay took out the fuse, which is how it’s supposed to work. If the fuse was not there, you would have melted wires. Safe travels!

What year car did your engine come out of? SOHC? Mine is an EJ25 from 98 Outback, DOHC, low miles, heads rebuilt, completely gone through with Subarugears 4.44 R&P. I average 18 mpg and have a hard time getting anything over 20mpg. I generally cruise 70 mph on pretty flat roads in Michigan.
@PostPros
@PostPros 3 года назад
Engine is Ej20 from 2003 and SOHC. Running on an ej 251 management from about 2003 as well. Is your oxygen sensor good? What codes do you have?? That seems kinda low for mpg’s. I bet somethings throwing it off causing it to run rich for some reason..

@@PostPros hey man, I got a sohc ej203 going into a meyers Manx, what do you mean when you say your using an ej25 management
@PostPros
@PostPros 3 года назад
@@cameronthomas4290 using management/intake/harness from a usdm ej25 out of a 2002 forester(map sensor based). Manifolds fit since both phase 2. Actually been experimenting putting in some E85 mixed with 87. I’ve ran about 5 gallons e85, with 8 gallons at 87octane. Runs WAY better since higher octane and is way more resistant to knock since subarus are prone to knock (especially with JDM engines).. I’ve read after about 30% E85 your injectors max out(in ej subarus). Definitely runs smoother, little worsened fuel mileage. But still fun to mess around with🤙

The only thing I don't like is an interference engine that the bean counters decided to time with a rubber band!
@PostPros
@PostPros 3 года назад
You’re right, it has a belt and is an interference engine. The early 90’s Subaru ej engines were non-interference engines if you were wanting to source one for that reason. So there are a LOT!! of engines with belts and interference, and never have problems. Different makes, models of all sizes, country’s..exc... Change it once every 100,000 miles and worry about other things failing, because timing belts don’t fail if they’re done at the correct interval. I’ve seen 120,000 mile timing belts that are still running strong on Subarus(that need changed but still working!). I’ve seen plenty of chains/tensioners fail as well, along with bad lifters clattering and valves being out of spec, everything has problems. But we can keep them to a minimum by watching out for the weak points⚙️🔧. Thanks for watching🎉
@vanstechcorral
@vanstechcorral 3 года назад
Dust in a Bus ... Glad you've had no problems. I know personally four loyal Subaru owners who have had issues despite following maintenance recommendations. One was destruction within several hundred miles after a dealer belt installation, which was covered under warranty. There is a reason recent Subaru engines no longer use the rubber belt, but a more expensive and durable technology. Whatever the other merits of the engine, almost all the major failures are this weak link. When it fails, the valves hit the pistons and the engine is ruined. I might also note that among professional mechanics, 50% are at the bottom of the class. Importantly, they are nowhere near your own abilities and attention to detail. As well, ordinary Subaru drivers seldom have your level of attention and sensitivity to engine issues that signal problems. All that said, the power and economy of the engine are superior to the waterboxer, as your experience shows. Thanks for your excellent videos.

Yes I’ve seen them videos as well and they are good!! I’d love to build another subarugears trans⚙️. Maybe some day, mine is still going great! Love it! If you have any questions about building it let me know! Yes no shifting I would guess a bent fork, check out the synchro too on that particular gear.. If you ever put any high torque through your transmission they have braces called “blast plates” you can easily install. Keeps the trans cases from flexing and just makes it more solid!!
