Tony can write beautiful riffs. His fingers unfortunately limit his lead playing. Still a top 10 guitarist in the world. Blackmore is on another planet as far a leads. Experimentation live things off the cuff. With that man can do live I've never seen nothing like it. I've got to see the big three Page Blackmore Iommi. Page sloppy seemed hard to pull it off. He did but looked like he was in trouble at times. Blackmore you never know what he was going to do. Iommi always perfect in control cake walk for him. Geezer was the wild card.

Thats funny you mention that I was just gonna say, my friend I grew up with was a major Sabbath fan. I was more into the purp. But as I got older, started liking Sabbath more. They were just too dark at first for me. And their recordings seemed to get worse as they went. Iommi always had a bass overtone to his guitar I didn't like. I liked Never Say Die, but the real BS fans didnt. It didnt matter too much to me. I had alot of albums my friends couldn't stand. I even often wondered "wtf was I thinking when I bought this" like the cars and B52s.... again, wtf was I thinking? So, I went through the Zeppelin era, which totally screwed my grades at school. My Pop wanted to kill Jimmy Page. Then Motorhead, and harder metal Maiden, Saxon, Accept, Priest Lots of goodies there. Then my hearing started to take a dive. But I had been playing and working at a night club, so that didnt help. Now, I still play (still suck too) and older than dirt.

This is quite interesting, though it takes a while to get to the point. Their assessments of each other are pretty realistic, though I'm not sure Blackmore was better live than Page. Certainly Page was far superior in songwriting and studio playing. I can understand why he, Beck and Clapton might not have felt that Blackmore was a serious musician on their level. They pursued authenticity, each in his own way, and he was much more of a 'whatever works' character. Bottom line, Zep were original, they took music somewhere: Purple were much more basic, meat 'n' taters, like AC/DC.

Exactly. In their Heydays. I loved Zeppelin and Sabbath studio work, Deep Purple were OK in that forum. However, on stage, everything was flipped 180 degrees. Like you said, Ritchie's live work was incomparable, and especially in the 1970s, you pretty much had to be at every show because, based on bootleg documentary evidence, you realize that from night to night, they didn't play anything the same way twice, even though the setlist hardly changed.

I set out to learn that and it just gets away from ya. How TF can anyone ramp up to play that fast and not get sloppy? I got the solo from Highway Star. I had that dialed in. Some of his stuff was just too diabolical. I had to nope out on some DP songs because I could never do them justice. I can admit to the same thing with a couple of Zep songs and a boatload of Jeff Beck stuff. To me, that is the mark of a genius guitar player. Not just speed, because Yngwie has that, and I couldn't care less, but playing something that is utterly beyond my capacity to even begin to duplicate the style. One of my favorite moment in the Perfect Strangers tour was when Blackmore is shredding on some Beethoven, with a laser generated image of B conducting him, and goes off script into some shredding and the cartoon B glared at him. It epitomized Ritchie. Just who DO you think you are mister?

Blackmore stands above all of them live as he never rehearsed solos, all his guitar solos have elements of improvisation in them, you can listen to however many versions there are of a live solo by Blackmore and none of them will be the same, this was at the heart of live Purple with Lord and Blackmore capable of making it up as they played and the other band members able to blend seamlessly into the improvisations.

It was the same for most guitarists at that time, all guitar solos had elements of improvisation in them. The versions were never the same, most of the time much longer thant the studio versions. What a ride he takes you on listening to his solos on 'Machine Head'. Younger generations need to go out and buy this record. Nothing quite like them before or since. They are worthy of transcription note for note. Even though I've heard he likes to improvise, the solos laid down on that record are as worthy of remembering as the columns of a Greek Temple.

Blackmore might be overlooked a lot because of what he does, he makes sound easy. Until you sit down with your guitar and try to figure out some of his work, (like Highway Star for example) you don´t realize that what he´s doing is very intricate and difficult to figure out and/or play.

It's Ritchie's picking technique, his hand doesn't touch the guitar, it's monstrous! There aren't many guitarists in rock, jazz or country with that ability, it gives you a lot of string-skipping freedom. Closest are the gypsy jazz guys, but they play sitting down!

Back then in the late 60's & the 70's artists tended to be very candid when mentioning each other in the media. Some of it was a bit disarming, but it was all in the name of speaking your mind & being honest. Ritchie may well have made a qualifying statement about Jimmy's improvisational skills, but Jimmy knew this was coming from an impeccable craftsman who's standards were extremely high. Also, don't forget that Jimmy was also very critical of other artists during interviews. His reservations about the Beatles early recordings & comments to the effect that he was disappointed with many famous artists are well documented. He understood that everyone must be critical of others at some stage if they are to remain honest.

@@andrejz8954 JP and Hendrix were the kings of improvisation. Blackmore was quite bitter in his put downs which like most ego driven statements are based on self deluded fantasy. He's matured a lot now and is quite complimentary of people. I don't subscribe to this 'couldn't hold a candle' nonsense. It's schoolboy talk which is essentially an empty statement once again based on self delusion, ego and pride. Music is not a sport or competition. It is art that is to be appreciated. I think that Blackmore attracted a lot of attention in the 70s, because in addition to being a brilliant guitarist, with his own unique style, he was very eccentric and had a difficult personality, in addition to the competition between "who was the best" after Hendrix (Clapton , Page, Beck...inner circle" mentioned in the video). It is worth mentioning that Clapton, Page, Beck had a common past in The Yardbirds, which undoubtedly brought them closer, even if with some competition... This perhaps distanced Blackmore of the other great guitarists of the time.

Generally speaking, history will look back more favorably on bands/artists that stayed together for the most part, versus bands with numerous lineup changes and infighting. Additionally, if a member of the band, or an artist should die early, that too helps to cement a legacy. Certainly Ritchie’s demanding approach and strong willed, aloof personality has not endeared him to the masses; however, I think it’s also worth noting that given the sonic differences between Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin, the latter had broader appeal. As an example, when I was in school - 80s & 90s, no girls were listening to Deep Purple. The only people who were listening to Deep Purple were band people and metal heads, whereas just about everyone to some extent listened to Led Zeppelin. Objectively, love him or hate him, Ritchie Blackmore is one of the most talented and accomplished rock guitarists with few others at his level.

My favourite as well. As for the second part, I'll just copy paste my comment from above: Maybe I remember it right, but IIRC RB or EVH said that when they met before VH were really big/famous, EVH complimented him very nicely and RB just wrote him off as a nobody. Also, Satch said that RB is one of his greatest influences and RB commented, that Satch is good, but hasn't got any soul in his playing and thought it was more or less boring to him. For YM he said, great player, many notes, but I would like to see him play those things on one string (whatever that meant)...

You guys have Ritchie wrong. He is honest in his assessment of other guitarists. He's not saying it out of jealousy. He's saying it out of honesty. He is awkward socially. He doesn't know when to shut up. He even said many interviews he didn't want to be with the in crowd. He goes away from them. He wanted nothing to do with them.

Guitar players are extremely competitive.Egoes get involved.l am a guitarist. Most guitarists are afraid to follow Blackmore.l have seen both zeppelin and purple. I agree with Mr. Blackmore assessment. Page is master producer maybe that why he sounds so good on records, but live he is sloppy, and hit or miss.Blackmore is almost the complete opposite..As good as Blackmore is live he is unbelievable live. His classical training makes every note clean and clear.Even his vibrato ls in time, so many vibrato to the timing.l am over seventy. I always dreaded Blackmore, while digging his playing. ALl Guitarists fear him.

The one piece of Mr Blackmore’s work that for me epitomises his craft, his tone, his touch, his lyricism and his poetry is the track “When A Blind Man Cries”. That’s not a remastered version, not any live version, but the original as issued on vinyl as a single B-side to “Never Before” in 1972. And Mr Blackmore hates it.

I've seen Page & Blackmore back in the day...I was more into Blackmore, actually, than any of my friends. They were, like, Zeppelin this, Zeppelin that, Led Zep Led Zep Led Zep! Then I'd say, Rainbow! Better guitar player AND better vocalist! Everyone just laughed at me. Tell the truth, I'm not a musician, was just a teenager partying & going to as many concerts as possible, and I think most of us here would admit that we all kinda took the whole music scene for granted in the early-mid 1970s. The music was so good, so intense, I couldn't imagine Rock N Roll ever being anything but the A #1 music genre in the world, it would always rule supreme...you know. Anyway Rainbow w/ Blackmore & Dio are still my favorite band ever, Alvin Lee and Ten Years After a close second, but even still, in my mind almost all those bands are even-steven, all an equal part of the greater good, and how could you pick one individual musician over another? They all drove each other to get better & better, and their likes, I fear, will never be seen upon this earth again. Too bad, but I'm glad I was there when I was...

Same, loved Zeppelin. However, was really into Deep Purple and then Rainbow. Just think? The 60's and 70's produced probably the most iconic musicians of all time. Shit. So glad I was a teenager in the mid 70's. I've been influenced my whole life by my Dad with blues, funk, and Jazz. I was a lucky kid. What's out there today? Okay, really the only hard Rock band that comes to mind are those kids Greta Van Fleet. They have some talent and were definitely influenced by Zeppelin. I mean all the grunge bands are okay. However, they can not hold a candle to the very talented musicians before thrm❤😊😊

Both Ritchie and Jimmy can compliment each other easily enough today. However, before all the success compliments were another matter. They were both very ambitious young men. Each were full of confidence. Rock music was becoming bigger and bigger. The competition was growing exponentially. There was money and fame to be achieved. Ritchie and Jimmy certainly made their marks.

Each to their own. I like Led Zep and Purple, but tend to lean more towards Purple. Both groups have their own style. From a singing point of view, I’d say Gillan has more in the drawer than Plant. As bands, I’d say Deep Purple are more fun, and Led Zep take themselves too seriously. Oh, and this may be controversial, but I think Ian Paice is better than Bonham.

Page would have been aware of RB as they both at different times played for Screaming Lord Sutch. Als the band RB was in - the Outlaws - was a record label band contracted out to various singers etc he spent the early 60s touring and playing for the likes of rock n roll acts like Jerry Lee Lewis. Well known to Jim Marshall too. RB was an apprentice electrician in his youth and was always in Marshall's shop discussing amp modifications. A side to Ritchie that doesn't get mentioned much.
