I ran into (literally) Robert Plant at the Nashville airport several years ago. I was a bit star struck for a moment and managed to say thank you for all the wonderful music over the years. He was very gracious and replied “don’t stop listening, I am not dead yet”.

He can be kind of a dick, though, too - like about this song. He was pleased as punch with the the reaction it got (look at the way he performs it on Song Remains the Same), but after that he went off it and has consistently disrespected it in spite of the fact he knows that fans love it. And actually he has shown the same disrespect to the whole Zep catalogue, by the silly way he performs it, and to the band and fans by the way he has passively-aggressively resisted a reunion instead of openly just saying 'no'.

I was 14 in 68 and got to see them in a tiny club in the UK, standing only, in the front row. The stage was a simple raised plinth about 12" high, and Plant and Page had to stand half off the stage because of bonhams drum kit and the hammond organ, amps & speakers taking up the space. Magical. They did a return gig in 1970, same club, same deal, front row getting sweated on and deafened. Plant said off stage at one point "dont remember it as THIS small"! I can even remember what I wore and what they wore (I wore a long silk skirt with an embroidered peacock).

I'm 51 and, I've loved Zeppelin since I was 11 (actually my older brother played a little Zeppelin on guitar so I knew a few songs when I was 8 or so) . Walking home with a friend from seeing the original Karate Kid in the theater he insisted I had to hear Stairway and, since it was a 30 minute walk he taught me all the lyrics and melody before I ever heard the song. Needless to say he wasn't able to do it justice so when I first heard it I flipped out! I'd been a fan of Rock bands like Rush and Def Leppard Pyromania has just been released and was an exciting album that I fell in love with but! Zeppelin; hearing Stairway for the first time, copying it and bringing it home! I remember by the time the guitar solo was 15 seconds in I was so energized I started spinning around while laying on the living room carpet with all the joy of an 11 yr old who was right in the moment and completely focused and happy! Before long I'd bought every album they'd released with the $ I'd made sweeping up at a dry cleaners. I'd be payed daily 5 bucks an hour for 3 hours and walk down to the supermarket that sold more than the average and buy a cassette tape and play it on my Sony Walkman (the first I pod really, what an incredible invention! Take your music with you without carrying around a boom box! You could do anything you'd normally do unhindered and in your own world!) ! My friends could ask me to name every song on every album and I could do it. I just fell in love with the band and it'd be 7 yrs before I saw them live (The Song Remains The Same not live live right?) and I was with friends and so memorized and stoned I vaguely remember hearing "Look at Stan, he's finally getting a chance to see his boy's" By then I was learning to play guitar too and of course Stairway was at the top of my list . As soon as my fingers would cooperate I bought a magazine that showed me how and learned it. I started soloing more influenced by Page than anyone. Not to say I ever got to be as good as him , just that he continues to influence my playing to this day! Enough outta me, I think it's a testament to how timeless Zeppelin is and it's super cool that at 25 you found em' !! I saw Robert live for his Now and Zen Tour back in I dunno 89 or 90 ? Closest I could get. John Bonham died and Zeppelin didn't even consider a replacement drummer because Bonham was irreplaceable so they disbanded. So many great songs, so different from each other. Let me know if you want a few recommendations, I'd be happy to oblige. Have fun ✌️❤️🎸🎶🙏

I only learned a few years ago that he lost a son many years ago. Karac would be 45 now. I have a tremendous amount of sympathy and compassion for parents who have lost children, the pain must be excruciating. He has done the right things, though. He doesn’t bury the memory, instead he writes songs about him. It won’t make the pain go away entirely, but it is far more healing than to lock his passing and the pain it causes away. Thank you, Robert, for all you give us with your music and phenomenal singing. You are a classic, a true legend. ❤

Zep was a band without equal, still is. The greatest frontman, drummer, guitarist and (oh my god) bassist-instrumentalist of all time in Jones. Robert is holding back with a little grin here. He has said for decades that "Kashmir" is his favorite & the song he wishes to be remembered for. I don't blame him holding back a little for all the STH lovers - he's aware how iconic it is for so many. "Kashmir" is and always been the song I go back to time & time again on my playlist. I'm just glad I live in a world where Led Zeppelin exists.

Like da324, I've been listening to LZ for over 50 years, and now I'm careful, like to put some time between listens. And favourites change over time. I remember giving LZ III my first listen and thinking, "well, that's a dud." But over time, maybe that's what I think their best album might be-- though I usually end up having a big argument with myself when I try to form an opinion on what their best album/song was. I do treat "Since I've been lovin' you" as a fine wine.

@rodchallis8031 well you both have me beat. I find the meanings & feelings either change for me over time or take me right back to a special time in the past.
@MarniMedia

@@rodchallis8031 I agree that Since I've Been Loving You is one of their best, and it's much more easy to listen to on a repeated basis than Kashmir and STH. Kashmir is impressive, but it's repetitive, so I can't listen to it over and over. STH, on the other hand, is amazingly constructed, but I only listen to the last part starting from Jimmy's solo. But Since I've been loving you is excellent throughout and it builds in a pleasing way. You also can hear each person playing at the top of their game, providing equal weight. A fine wine, indeed.

Stairway, or any song, is only overplayed if we let radio determine what's overplayed. Personally, I stopped listening to the radio frequently by the time I was in my early 20s in the late 90s. I control what's overplayed for me, and Stairway isn't overplayed. I come back to it every few months and I'm awestruck everytime, like I was when I first heard it on a rickety cassette my sister's boyfriend gave me as a kid.

You just sat and listened and listed like it was the first time everytime. Thats what epic songs do I know I've written some. . They take you on a spiritual journey through the soul. As a song it has stood the test of time. I was 15 (1971) and easily impressed by most things at that age. I'm happy to say that even today's kids are discovering the song and what it brings to their lives. This is impressive because the level of competition in communication, radio, video, internet RU-vid etc is far more intense in this day and age (although today's music is diluted and predictable). I still dig it out every now and again for a sneaky listen.
