Honestly the idea that no majority government has ever got more than 40-ish percent of the votes, and that coalitions are viewed as a negative thing, are both mind-boggling to me.

It’s an incredibly stupid system, but it benefits the two major parties so changing it is going to be an uphill battle.
@ThoriberoCaroli
@ThoriberoCaroli 4 года назад
Indeed. A party getting 40% in my country would be considered a landslide victory... Strangest thing is, it makes more sense when there only was two parties in the UK. The party getting the majority rules, and the one with the minority does the work of the opposition, to scrutinize the government. But even with the Westminister system, and First past the post, there are now several parties in the UK. There are no longer two well definied polar opposite choices, and it would be absurd to expect majority governments everytime. I do not see why they do not move over to proportianal representation and a consensus/coalition system, even when it is clear that there are no longer just the two major parties. But that is the thing I guess. The two major parties, as TheRecreator pointed out, benefit from it...
@thijmenworm233

It shows the politieval systeem is fundamentally flawed, perhaps even broken. But try campaigning on completely changing the voting system, and you Will get almost no votes. Also the two big parties profit the most from this, so they will never consider such a change.

In 2011 there was a refferendum on changing the FPTP system to one with proportional representation, and it marks one of the few times both major parties (plus the lib dems) came together to absolutely crush the prospect of an actual democracy de-railing their comfy status quo.

While I am by no means in favour of No Deal, I do think it helped raise the emotional stakes in seasons 3 and 4, in what would have otherwise been quite dry and boring instalments of the show. So for these reasons, I am glad the threat of No Deal is returning for season 5. What I will find interesting, is if Johnson continues to ignore the SNP's claims for IndyRef2. Because the SNPs argument is exactly the same as the UK's reasons to leave the EU - closer authority over their jurisdiction. Scotland doesn't want to be ruled by Westminster, and seeing as both the SNP hold a clear majority in Scotland, and voted remain, the foundations of a decent argument to have another ref is undeniable. The thing is, if Johnson ignores the SNP, that will only create anger and frustration and probably accelerate the desire to leave. Also, because of this election result, we *will* have a Sir Boris Johnson by 2040.

They can't have 79 MPs rebel, which is why I dislike that way of counting majorities. If more than 40 MPs rebel, they will have less than 325 votes, and so it is theoretically possible for them to lose the vote. I don't like the other policies of the Conservatives either but that's what we've got. Guess we'll see what happens she will keep my "told you so"'s for another time 😉. I do think that we should talk about hung parliaments though. And electoral reform. It is still the case that the Conservatives won but it now means that 43% of the population who voted will determine what the other 57% will get and I don't think that's right. Even if it was a labour win it still wouldn't be right. I even think the brexit party voters should have a say. FPTP is terrible and that's why it's been phased out in Australia or NZ for example. Parliament shouldn't be a place of forcing laws through, it's a place where law and governance should be discussed and cross party support of different options considered. The Westminster system is inherently broken. And yes, things still get done under these different systems - it's just more representative of the actual populations votes rather than the unrepresentative mess that is Westminster. Tl;dr We should always have hung parliaments. Because that's what the population is too - divided and with different opinions. It works in lots of other places.

Kris Eriksen Because compulsory voting is slavery, if you don’t want to vote you shouldn’t have to, it simply means that you don’t care how it turns out and have no right to complain if you don’t like the results. Further, if you don’t want to vote I don’t want you voting because it means you don’t actually care and clearly have not considered the issues and came to an intelligent conclusion and are more likely to either vote randomly, vote for whoever you perceive is popular, or vote based on something trivial like hair style or simple name recognition. In short, you are not an informed voter and do not actually care about the consequences of your vote on the rest of us, so I don’t want you voting. Compulsory voting is a terrible idea.

It's never been the case that you have to win seats in Scotland. Most elections Scottish seats have little to no influence on who has a majority. Scotland only aligns with the rest of the UK if it happens to be won by the same party who wins a majority in England. This is the democratic deficit that is at the core of the argument for Scottish independence as the UK was not founded as a unitary state but as a political union and developments from the 1950s onwards have seen the UK become increasingly centralised in a way that was not the case the 19th century. This is spite of the fact that Scotland now has a devolved parliament.

The quality of TLDR's analysis in this video is rather lacking. Examples: 1. Looking at the total share of the vote, the LibDems gained more than a third compared to 2017 (7.4% in 2017, 11.4% in 2019). They lost a seat while over a million people more decided to vote LibDems than did in 2017. So their policy of "revoke to remain" did work for them after all. It just did not translate into a gain in number of MP seats. 2. Theresa May won 42.3% of the vote share in 2017, a gain of 5.5% compared to 2015, yet the Tories lost 13 seats. Johnson's vote share was 43.6%, a mere 1.3% gain compared to May's result. Yet he gained 48 seats. Effective appeal among voters of a certain policy can't be derived from the number of seats in a FPTP election system. Vote share is a much better indication. Johnson's victory may have been enormous in seats won, but in vote share he only did slightly better than his predecessor. 3. Jo Swinson of the LibDems stood as candidate in Scotland and tightly lost her seat to Amy Callaghan of the SNP. She fell 149 votes short. Both parties are clearly anti-Brexit and together the two parties had a vote share of 74% in that constituency, so it wasn't so much the brexit stance that made the difference. 3. The Conservatives will have 365 seats in the next Parliament. With a total of 650 seats, they'll have an absolute majority of 40 seats. So where does the claim come from that Johnson can afford up to 80 rebelling Tory MPs to pass through his legislation proposals? With just 41 rebels he'd already have lost the absolute majority. 8:32 By the way, "rebel" is miraculously misspelled.
@AbiGail-ok7fc
@AbiGail-ok7fc 4 года назад
The effective majority of the Tories is 88, if you take into account SF and (deputy) speakers don't vote. The Tories cannot pass laws if 44 of them vote against them (assuming the entire opposition votes against them), but they can pass laws if 87 abstain.
@bosoerjadi2838
@bosoerjadi2838 4 года назад
@@AbiGail-ok7fc Sinn Fein and the Speakers account together for only 11 votes. Which means that 320 would constitute the absolute majority. The effective majority would only be larger than 45 if the rebels would kindly limit their rebelliousness to abstention, thus rendering their rebellion unbelievably pointless.

I’m a conservative voter and so glad we won. Not long now until we leave the EU. (5 weeks) also I’m looking forward to seeing the future trade deal with America. On topic. Why would the U.K. need to have an extension beyond 2020? The trade deal with America will Be much bigger than any deal the EU will give U.K. so Boris knows the America deal is far more important going forward with the EU deal just being a bonus to smooth things over.

@QemeH
@QemeH 4 года назад
Well, that highly depends on how you define "fluke" - because you always have to account for the fact that voters KNOW the voting system in advance. It can be argued that the result would not be the same if the rules were different. So I'm not so certain of the "fluke", but it IS certainly an outcome that is only possible because of the FPTP system, that - imho - is the worst possible way to vote (unless you deviate from the "one man, one vote" principle that is...)

It's hard to say, in one hand you've a very recent referendum of independence and in the other hand you've that one of the key reasons to vote no was remaining in the EU, so a reasonable argument can be made both ways, being Catalan i'm also curious to see how this will play out.
@AbiGail-ok7fc

From what I understood, Scotland cannot have an independence referendum without the consent of Westminster. Considering that the latter is now in tight control of the Conservative and Unionist party, I don't give the Scots high hope. (And given that NI has voted more Republican MPs than Unionist MPs, there's another reason Westminster is far from eager to have anything related to breaking up the Union to happen)

A view from the US. Your recent election was, in effect, a 2nd referendum. Your citizenry made it emphatically clear: they want out of the EU, period. Theresa May was exactly like David Cameron: neither of them wanted to leave the EU at all, so Cameron resigned and it looked like May was using her lack of a solid majority in Parliament to her advantage by not really finding a way to deliver Brexit and tagging MP's with the albatross of failure to deliver Brexit. Seems from here your citizens are fine with a No Deal Brexit. That's what Johnson and Farage stood for, and they were rewarded. So the Remainers need to sit down and shut up.

The election results are showing people are tired of the uncertainty, by voting Conservative, they are backing the horse with the best chance of a definitive end to this brexit mess. In contrast, the major opposition of labour chose to sit on the fence until the very end whilst Liberal Democrats are unfortunately too obscure for most of the general public to know (and yet despite this, as a result of their remainer views saw the largest increase in vote share). In the end though, Boris got what he wanted, and now can do what they want.
