This is a very old Chinese folk song. Background of this composition is very sad. Dimash sings the role of Emperor Xuanzong of Tang, who sentenced his beloved Concubine Yang Guifei to death for treason. That's why Dimash growls so hard in the first part. Then she reminds how she was besotted with him and asks why there's only one step between love and hate. Insanely romantic lyrics. Li Yugang (born 1978) Chinese singer, composer and producer in the Peking Opera. Here he sings in the traditional Huadan style when a male singers play a female roles in Chinese opera. That's an allusion to The Drunken Concubine in Peking Opera. Very interesting performance 🔥🔥✨✨
Much better and more detailed description of the storyline than my post. This is one of those performances that rises to another level of enjoyment if one knows the storyline, even if one doesn’t know the language.
To add on, he was forced by his generals to order the execution as they believed she was the reason for his downfall. So in reality he was very sad and unwilling to do so. But in the end Noble Consort Yang drank the wine willingly to preserve his throne and as she lays dying in his arms, she 'dreams back to a time when their love was more pure.
Drunken Concubine tells the story of an Emperor who has many wives and concubines but he has one favorite. This song is the scene where he sentences his favorite concubine to death for an infraction against him. She asks for mercy.
I was bewildered when I first heard this. I realized that my brain just seemingly quit ... it didn't know how to hear what I was hearing, no context, no meaning, no memory. When it was over I was just staring, literally not able to remember what I'd heard. It was as if I'd been asleep. It took about 3-4 listens before I could begin to hear it properly: listen to both lines as they were singing, and really HEAR the harmonies and the dissonance. In the beginning I suspect that my ears kept collecting the sounds, but my brain neurons just threw their little neuron hands in the air and went on strike. No existing neural pathways and no idea where and how to build new ones. I find it fascinating to recall that all I had was an urgent feeling that something important had just happened, but I didn't know what. Now I just LOVE it. In addition to his opera career, Yugang performs in a fusion space. What I've found online is mostly mando-pop blended with peking opera. So Yugang and Dimash were an obvious match just waiting to happen.
You should also check many of his other duets. He does a duet called Jasmine with Wu Tang. Also one called Swan Goose with Tengger. Those are both excellent. There’s another one, Ulisse, with Aida Garafullina. With Zarinah Altynbayeva he sings Question of Honor. All of these are very good performances.
I love your reactions!! This duet with Li YuGang is so great because of the mixing of the different styles and singing traditions and they managed to blend it so well !!! I would love to see you react to Tengri and Dimash in Snow Goose. They blend the Monoglian traditions with Dimash in Kazakh and Mandarin, and Tengri in Monolian and Mandarin! Thank you for your love and respect for Dimash!!! He will be doing an online concert!!! Soon! en.dimashnews.com/dimashali-creative-center-announces-the-first-online-concert-of-dimash-kudaibergen-dimash-digital-show/. And he just presented his newest collab with Igor Krutoy in Russia ...
I love this pairing, such a surprise and so much respect for the traditional elements and the music itself, both demonstrating Dimash's attitude of unconditional love. I am so grateful for you, RU-vid and the opportunity to share in the beauty from the Marshall Islands.
As always great reaction. In Drunken Concubine Dimash and Li Yu Gang, present us by way of dialogue, the tragic love story between a famous Concubine (represented by Li Yu Gang) of the Chinese imperial court and the emperor (represented by Dimash) for that reason the two thrones in the stage. The Concubine dies poisoned as a result of the intrigues of enemies in the imperial court. The emperor is sentencing the Concubine to death (the vocal fry part)The Concubine reminds the Emperor of happy times together but does not change the outcome, the death of the Concubine.Incredible staging of traditional Chinese Opera style (Li Yugang) and contemporary style (Dimash) Greetings from Nicaragua 🇳🇮
Agreed! Dimash has done a number of gorgeous duets, but «Ulisse» is on another level entirely... simply incredible, and my favourite pairing so far!👌🤗😍😍😍
Hi, Jake, as you pointed out, the combination of different musical styles is a very rich skill. From what I saw of his work, this is a characteristic present in Dimash's way of thinking about music. In that sense, there is an interesting performance - Dimash and Victor Ma - Earth Song. A big hug!
Whenever Dimash does duets, even if the other person has a completely different voice, Dimash is always able to blend his voice into an amazing performance.
Hermosa presentación....pero DIMASH siempre te asombra !!!! cautiva por su gran rango vocal y su carisma angelical . Gracias x tu linda reacción ✌🎼🇰🇿♥️🇦🇷
THANKS for your reactions to Dimash!!!!.....Li Yugang This performance is in Shanghai Spring Festival at China. This song is musical conversation between Emperor (Dimash at golden chair) and a Concubine (Li Yugang) Mr Li is a 41 years old and very famous Chinese traditional opera singer and He perform female parts. In this song Dimash crazy high note is F#7 and His low crazy note in this song is E1(growling). New range is E1 to D8. Amazing Harmonies. Dimash C#6 in the top end. Greetings from a Mexican Dear! 🇰🇿🇲🇽🇰🇿
I loved your reaction. They did such a phenomenal job of collaborating for this song. Dimash always manages to interact so well with others without dominating them, which he certainly could do if he so wished. Li's training has resulted in the sound he produces, which you analyzed perfectly, yet the two of them melded their tonalities together perfectly.
LOL your video caption: What just happened! Yes, Indeed :D... They brought both of their ethnic techniques in this performance too, such a nice mixture of culture. That whistle note was also amazing! He sometimes does them in other songs (and much higher :D) like in Unforgettable day: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-u52XDilf628.html (from Gakku TV live 2017) . But I love this version when he was much younger, not sure what year this was though ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xe4UxsteEWg.html . Or react to both, their a bit different, he really likes to improvise with this song. None of them have CC so you would have to look up the lyrics first (this song was composed by Dimash himself) BTW, did you know that Dimash is going to hold an online concert? Check out the news on his YT Channel.
Buen día. soy de la CDMX y perfecto al sumarte al mundo Dimash el mejor cantante que existe en este tiempo. muy acertados tus comentarios la la sensibilidad que demuestras en ellos saludos
This is one of my favorite Dimash songs lately. I love the pairing with Li Yugang. He is very skilled and talented, and I think his voice is equal to Dimash here, and brings a wonderful contrast and dimension to the song. The story of the song is powerful and deep, as so many Dimash songs are. I read somewhere that China was the perfect place for Dimash to become popular, even more than in his own country, because China has a tradition of high singing for men, so they were more receptive to a voice like Dimash's; whereas there were those in his own country that called his high pitched singing screaming, and didn't respect it at first.
👉 Dimash and Li Yugang are here at Dragon TV Shanghai Spring Festival Gala 2020. Li Yugang (42 ys.) is a male Chinese opera singer and performer in the China National Opera & Dance Drama Theater; a member of the National Youth Federation. He specialises in "nan dan" role, which is male who plays female role in Peking opera. Li Yugang has released a number of CDs. 👉 ’The Drunken Concubine’’ is a story that is said to have happened in the Tang Dynasty(745-755AD) emperor Ming-Huang. Yang Yu-Huan was the favorite among all of the emperor's concubines. They arranged a rendezvous one evening in the imperial gardens. After waiting a long time, Yang realizes that the emperor had made plans with another concubine. This humiliation makes her angry and depressed at the same time, which leads to her getting drunk all by herself. (Wiki helped). 🌼🇩🇪
Dimash and Tengri is another very interesting colaberation you should look at. It was fun watching your face as you heard the whistle note, it always surprises the first time you hear it.
I LOVE this! I've watched it many times and it really grows on you! Li Yugang is a famous singer in the Peking Opera, where he sings traditional female roles. 'Drunken Concubine' is about the Emperor (Dimash) and a concubine (Li Yugang) and he is sentencing her to death (I do not know how this came about), and she is reminding him of the wonderful time that they had had together while drinking and getting drunk. He remembers and wishes that they could have one more drunken time together. This song/story is interwoven with 'Diva Dance'. The end result is a phenomenal performance and the ending of their duet with the blending of their voices is like no other! Fantastic! Thank you for your reaction.
Thank you! For a very surprising duet, please react to Dimash’s duet with rapper Victor Ma. It’s VERY unusual! And then his duet with Aida Garafullina singing Ulisse.
Honestly, I would like to give you ten times thumbs up! It's so much fun to watch you react to this song!!! You make me lough every time! I think I felt very similar when I found that video just a few days bevor you reaction. Thank you for this one!!!!!
One of my favorite performances. I like the ones where dimash is having fun. When he had a duet with rapper victor mar, his concert performance of qazaqstan, his performance of power rangers, and others. But I also like duets like notre dam and meaning of eternity.
Stylistically, they are so different but it works in a really weird way. Li Yugang’s style is not for everybody, but impressive nonetheless. (Truthfully, as much as I am a huge fan of Dimash, I know there are - gasp! - people who don’t like his style either.). I truly have found it fascinating to listen to Dimash being paired with so many great singers. Love hearing new and different musical offerings.
Thanks so much Dear friend! Please, please, PLEASE could you react to my favourite of all Dimash's (incredible!) duets, «Ulisse» with Aida Garifullina - I promise you, you won't regret it!!😊😘
Merci !
This was definitely a very unique performance. Dimash and Li Yugang sung this beautifully together. I went and looked up and listened to more performances by Li. He has a wonderful voice and really surprised me with his performances. Of course, Dimash is, and always will be my favorite. But I have found many other singers that I would probably not of heard of, if it wasn’t for Dimash. Jam Hsiao, and Terry Lin, are just a couple more you should check out. 🎼🎤🎶❤️🇺🇸🙋🏻♀️
Thank you very much for your reaction on Dimash singing, Diva dance. The best version of the song is on "I am singer" in China in 2017. It is the best! You will enjoy it! The same thing with Autumn Strong - Dimash has done his best!
Maravillosa reacción por favor no deje de analizar el resto de la presentación, diva dance es fenomenal. Gracias y éxitos, saludos desde Barranquilla Colombia.
