All.contestants are Chinese professional established singers and Dimash was invited as a.wild card foreign contestant (Dimash is from Kazakhstan, part of the former USSR). He doesnt speak Chinese and was the only foreign contestant on that show. He opened the series with this performance of SOS (a french song), and the following day, it garnered 600M views and Dimash became a superstar sensation overnight in China. Dimash was raised in a very traditional community oriented culture where both parents are well known singers, and where he understood, from very early age, that with great gifts come great responsibilities. His music crosses all land, culture, religious, language boundaries. As you observed. you don't need to understand the words to understand the emotion. (Although, if you had the version with English captions - you might have been in tears also like some of that audience, because the story / the lyrics are asking : How do I make sense of all this business about being human" "Why do I live? All Dimash's music is cross-cultural. I love all his music and a lot of it is not in English. He is in my mind the greatest vocalist alive. You can pick any song he has done or any video he has done and it will be good. His fan base (Dears as Dimash calls us) is transcontinental and knows no boundaries. Dimash does indeed like to do things to the best of his ability and his videos are masterpieces. In concert he is much more relaxed. He says he feels at home on stage and that it's the one place where he doesn't worry about things. He just enjoys singing to and with his Dears (he calls his fans Dears because he says they are very dear to him.) And he especially enjoys hearing his fans sing to him! You should see his smile when they try to sing his songs, especially when they do their best to sing in Kazakh! I really liked what you said about a person doing what they were created to do. Dimash was only 22 years old when he opened and won the very first episode of the I Am Singer Chinese show in 2017 with this performance of SOS - a showcase competition for well known, professional Chinese singers, with a voting audience of 500 people from the music industry. Dimash was the youngest and the first foreigner ever to be invited on the show (as a wildcard) and, as a total unknown in China, he wasn’t expected to last more than half the show. He astonished everyone, came second in the competition, an overnight sensation in China (600 million views of this performance) and a global phenomenon. He turned 28 in May. Dimash is university trained in classical (bel canto) and contemporary music and has been training (voice and piano) since he was 5 years old. He has degrees in voice (classical), contemporary music, completed a Masters in composition and is currently completing a PhD in musicology. He was offered a position with Astana Opera but declined to follow a career in contemporary music, mixing classical elements and traditional Kazakh music with pop music. Liked and subbed. As an opera singer myself, there is simply two words that explains what he can do: Classical training. The thing he was smart about was that he was training from a very early age when he was no doubt a boy soprano. It is the only way he strengthened the chest, through the head voice and into that boy soprano register. The Russian countries (Kazakhs are within that sphere) are deeply respectful of their classical roots. No matter the genre of music they pursue, they learn their craft from a classical level and branch out from there. Glad you're both fans of Dimashland.

That tall, young, Eurasian man from Kazakhstan is the greatest technical singer on this earth. Dimash is Muslim and he is thankful to Allah for his talent and has dedicated his life to being the best for whom he calls The Creator. He is so stunning in his vocals from 23 years of classical/operatic and contemporary training, he puts American slackers (I am in that group) to shame. Great reactions! I have listened to Dimash sing SOS hundreds and hundreds of times. This will always be my favorite version. He never sings a song the same way. His performance still amazes me. I agree that Whitney Houston’s is another not from earth song. Lara Fabian is another vocalist who delivers emotion, excellence. I think of her as a female Dimash. And he is openly in awe of her.
