I moved from Paris to Montreal back in 2012 - On a work Permit, then became a Permanent Resident, Then became a Citizen - And I am soooo not going Anywhere - Love this place to death.
As somebody who feels good in both English and French, I love that most people in MTL are bilingual. I love the "Bonjour/Hello" when you walk into a café - not to mention, it's helpful that everyone understands Franglais.
What living in Montreal is really like greatly differs from one place to another. That's why Montrealers identify themselves much more with their neighborhood / burrough than they do with the city at large.
I agree with this. Montreal is really full of community/neighbourhood bubbles. I find white people from other parts of Canada usually live in the Mile end or plateau, which is fine, but a pretty different experience than if you were to live in Cote des neiges or st. Leo for example.
@@MM-fy8yx I wouldn't say Mile End / Plateau attracts white Canadians from other parts of Canada. It's just a spot full of university students, artists, affluent hipsters / bobos, Frenchies (from France), Hassidic Jews (in the Mile End) + some tourists.

@@The_Monolith For sure you're right on that, I love to hang out in the few remaining Greek associations, as a big fan of Theo Angelopoulos and traditional philosophy, I bond with them, although like you said they're way less present now, current generations have assimilated. The only thing I'm not too much in favor of is the general process of gentrification, but I'm not in a naive state of mind that it won't happen, which is why I'm enjoying every day of the businesses that won't be able to afford their rent in 10 years.
I lived and worked in Montreal for a year in the early '90s. I loved it! The people are friendlier than I'm used to (having spent most of my adult life in Toronto). In my experience English speakers are embraced as long as you make an effort to speak even a little French. Most of the friends I made that year were Francophones. As Dan said, I loved their joie de vivre!
As a Quebecer who speaks mostly English in my circle, I honestly think French is one of the most important things in Quebec because it marks our distinction from the rest of Canada. I speak French well and I often do my daily errands or small talk in French. Growing up I realize how more and more it's just part of my culture and my surroundings and there is a beauty in that. Obviously, things like wanting to change, granita to a french word is a waste of tax dollars (they actually did that to an Italian business) but with respect to all my French homies out there, je vous aime!
@@ushenyagoonetilleke5747 French is a pretty complex language compared to English. I think it is more complex because of all the grammar and structure that has to be learnt, such as verbs, proper sentence structure and so on. If you already have knowledge of a romance language (Spanish, Portuguese, Italian,Romanian etc) French will be a lot easier for you to learn. You can probably learn a passable French within a couple months learning French on your own via RU-vid/Books, but a teacher is highly recommended to guide you through proper training. To answer your question specifically, it’s often thought that you can master anything with 2,000 hours of practice. I’m not saying it will take you that long to learn French, but it all depends of how much time you’re willing to dedicate to it. Bonne Chance!
@@ushenyagoonetilleke5747 Yea, (if you do end up coming to Montreal) there are so many language schools that teach French. If not, it’s pretty widely spoken internationally and I’m sure there would be a French teacher somewhere nearby. Something I can recommend to start off with is learning the verbs in Présent (present): the verb Être (to be) and Avoir (to have). This will lead to a lot of basic sentences.
Torontonian here - I love love love Montreal. There's an ease about the city that really sticks with you and makes you want to go back again and again. I miss it deeply and look forward to going again soon.

I’m an Algerian immigrant who came to Montreal when I was just 2 years old. I am fully bilingual and pursued secondary education in English so I think bilingualism is a wonderful gift and do also see Montreal’s language duality as amazing. However, I understand how important French is & should be. My parents chose this place because its official language is French and their English is not that good, they speak 3 other languages though, but they picked this place because it’s French. so to them it is important to receive service in French and be able to work! I really liked the way you presented the “issue” of Quebecois identity. I personally feel more Montrealer & Quebecois than I do “Canadian”, because it is so true that we (francophones, anyway) grew up with a totally different culture and classics than the rest of Canada. I really appreciate your work and your French is quite good! I could understand you anyway! Keep working on it, you won’t regret it:)

The flag at the end next to the Québécois flag is the Catalan one . Another region of the world which is fighting to preserve their culture and language .

@Robert That's ignorant, I have anglophone friends where most of the people they grew up with moved to other provinces because they were antagonized by close minded French people judging them. That's the reason why Montreal lost its international importance to Toronto despite of its massige geographical advantage, all the big financial institutions were turned off par la loi 101. Many of the comments here by French people make me ashamed to share this culture, but to anyone reading this realize that most French people are more gentle and open minded.
The house you've showed with the big face painted on the wall 6:11 was formerly my grand mother's house. almost 50 years ago. Personnaly i really apreciate when an english youtuber made a video about the "Quartier" where i grown up. Respect to that and this is a "petit velour" like we said. So thanks a lot for that. I'm now in St-Leonard and i miss my Petite-Patrie. And the church you showed at 7:01 this is where i've been baptized.

@@basketballsteve54 Like many anglos, you do not understand the reality of french speaking people in a continent overwelmed with english and american culture and language. French Quebecer wish and work to keep their language and heritage active. It's the same issue in other provinces where they have french speaking communitiesé. Ask the Ontario and Albertan french speaking communities, you'll learn a thing or two. If we have to fight for it, it's because our language and heritage is not respected. We shouldn't have lost the first referendum, but the asshole which is Trudeau (father) had to meddle and act like the snake he was.Which cost us the referendum. It's just a matter of respecting every culture.
I think the thing that bothers Montreal people is the people (no matter their background) that come to live there and do not bother speak French and turn to English, or use English if its their native language as if Montreal was kind of New York -bis. And due to the demographics, then some shops starts to hire more anglophone, businesses turn to English, etc. which slowly kills the local identity. If the trend continues Quebec won't be different from Louisiana in the US in 100/200 years.
I love this video! I have visited Montreal once (my last trip before the pandemic) and found it to be a “sister city” to my hometown of Brooklyn. Please show off more of Montreal’s wonderful neighborhoods!
When I visited Manhattan and Brooklyn (also my last trip before the pandemic), It felt like Montréal was the sixth burrow of New York. Please come back !
My feeling on this (as an American living in America) is how wonderful to have a French-speaking province that we could drive to. And I saw Montreal as this not-too-big, charming, French-speaking city with tons of history and culture. I studied the French Language in high school and university, but never really had a chance to immerse myself and really get stronger in French (this is in the age before the internet mind you). I went skiing at Gray Rocks once-flying into Montreal and taking a bus to the mountain, and found everyone (every native that is-ahem) was bilingual and also pretty friendly. It was later that I realized what a contentious thing the French vs English thing was. Sadly (kidding) I married a woman from Taiwan who had recently moved here and worked at my company back then). I switched every neuron in my head toward learning to speak and read and write Chinese. That was over a quarter century ago. I will go back (when the pandemic is really over). You’re right about a lot. I’d add that the reason why Montréal is so different and special IS because of the French difference. Remember that a lot of neighborhoods like Rosemont and le Plateau and Petite Patrie were all predominantly francophone and that’s where the root of the difference lies. Because yeah, we’re all Canadians, but in essence, there were two « peuples fondateurs » that fought for land here, and they came originally from very different countries with very different cultures. Time has passed, of course, but it’s not Loi 101 that birthed the French culture. Before that, there were les « canadiens français », they were everywhere (hence the Habs name, les Canadiens, which were essentially all franco Québécois). So, part of the answer of the difference in Quebec lies there, and that’s why it became so important to politically fight for it, like you said, not as much to get away from the rest of Canada as to affirm that difference. Unfortunately, a lot of what makes the news are radical mouthpieces that give the movement a bad name. But look at how modern a lot of what the Parti Quebecois wanted in the 70’s and the core of the Revolution Tranquille.

I've been in love with Montreal ever since I first heard about this city back in the late 80s. To a then 12 year old me, it was like a magical place. Never been but always admired. I wish I could visit and maybe even stay a while. Someday.
Beautiful video ❤️ I've lived in Rosemont for 4 years now and although it is a kinda big neighbourhood, you've captured the exact area where I live so accurately and beautifully. Everything you filmed are the streets, the store and even the people I see everyday! I recognized a couple of my regular customers in the video (I work at a local fresh pasta store right next to the fruit store he showed). Everything you talked about was so real and accurate, from the cultural debates such as langages and Quebec independance to the community and joie de vivre that Montreal and Quebecers exudes. Really made me feel proud to be Québécoise 😝❤️

I live here. 1:16 - You don't need to do that, you can just take the 47 bus from the Laurier metro and it takes you to Vieux-Rosemont. 2:33 - That place has great French food. 2:43 - Gentrification is becoming a huge problem here. I'm being gentrified out of my place and I live on the other (east) side of VR, near the Botanical Garden. 5:37 - Ate there yesterday. 6:44 - That place has a good atmosphere. 6:56 - My salon. 7:11 - Went there when lockdown started and the big box stores had no food left.
I actually love that you're VLogging about the more "french" parts of Québec and Montréal in english, there's not enough of that in my opinion. It's really great to see, keep up the good work!
I live in rosemont, it s true that many goes trougth the track, but showing yourself going trougth it on a video you should be more worried of being sued by CN railroad for trepassing then by viewer
Indeed. Railroads have pretty big legal powers in Canada - including for safegarding their infrastructure, and safety in general. I would not recommend showing it on a video.
as someone who's grown up in rosemont, its nice to see someone showing aspects of this city that i know and love. now dont get me wrong, any representation of Montreal on youtube is amazing, but its always the touristy aspects, and not the actual spirit of the city! so thank you for putting this out there!

But also, a lot do. If you base that observation off of living in Montreal, then yes, you could come to that conclusion. But there is 5 million or so Québécois.es outside of Montreal that represent the souverainiste movement a lot more than your typical Montrealer. Especially if you spend a lot more of your time in West Montreal. We're far from the golden age of seperatism, I will give you that.

Interesting discussion on the french language issue in Montreal. Similar discussion in expatriat areas in Mexico. You go there to be part of the community not to change it to what you want it to be.
Mexico has not had as large Anglophone immigrant cultures. Montreal's flag represents the French, the English, the Scots and the Irish. 3/4 are English cultures, the language has been present for centuries...
i grew up in rosemont, always used to go to Masson street to go rent dvds, buying fruits and going to the bakery...ah I miss it I love how you can do most things by walking, there's everything near, a ton of parks, schools, the metro is super near...I truly miss it :)

I was born in Montreal and lived there until my dad was forced to move to Toronto because of work.. I still have a deep attachment to parts of Montreal and Quebec. So much so that I'm considering moving back one day.

Hey!...That's my beautiful and beloved neighborhood! Thanks for covering it up. Rosemont/Petite-Patrie, is really a place where you can find the real soul of the francophone side of the city. Still, a nice inclusive metling pot even if I used the term "francophone side". In here, even though we're a majority of french speakers, everybody is welcome to live in the area, and if you struggle at first learning a new (or second language), people will be patient and tolerant and they'll return the respects by accomodating an english speaker by switching to their language to fill up the gaps and make sure everybody understands each other. But it,s deff a must to learn french to really get grasp of the culture around here, live it and with enough patience and open mindedness, maybe even become a part of it! Montréal, "Ville-Marie", je t'aime!
Great video. I'm a Quebecoise living in a blue-collar town in Ontario that often leaves me feeling homesick. I appreciate your perspective on the sovereignty issue, which is so much more complex than outsiders realize. And you're absolutely right about all the other cultural facets not only of Montreal, but the province as a whole. After 14 years in Ontario, I still miss so much of it. Keep up the good work on the French! P.S.: If you're ever in the mood to make a video about the amazing transit system in and around Montreal, including how most of it is linked underground, that could be a good one. :)
18 flavours of poutine. Yup, that's Rosemont. It's got that small town feel. Right by the parks next to the street, the city paved a section for ball hockey, so the kids don't have to play on the streets. The 'rinks are surrounded by chain link fences and have permanent nets installed that the city maintains. Go further east to Blvd. Rosemont and Pie IX, is a large park/bike path. Very well maintained and full of people in the summertime.
Thanks for this, I was glad to learn more about this neighbourhood. I lived in Hochelaga-Maisonneuve and St-Henri, and worked in Wesmount, but didn't get to know the other neighborhoods that much... Been living in Trois-Rivières for 10 years, but I still miss Montreal so much !!!

I've lived in Montreal from 1987 to 1998 and the "hot topic" you talk about preoccupied everyone back then. I eventually got tired of it because there are more important problems to worry about. I live in Edmonton now and it's probably one of the best cities in Canada.
i grew up in Rosemont, for more then twenty years and the neighborhood got really bourgeois. Back in the days, you had so many latino, africans, arabs and asians. Now it’s mostly white middle class. Their shops got replace by yoga, coffee and grocery shop that are more expensive and high end. The rent also went so high… it’s impossible to stay in La Petite-Patrie if you make the minimum wage or on government aid. The majority of the old apartment are being replace by expensive condo and studio. And if you still live in a old apartment, the owner don’t repair anything… so it forces you to leave out. and for the french debate… i really don’t feel that french is slowly dying. every time the conversation gets on, their’s an automatic response to blame the immigrants that don’t speak french when in reality a lot of immigrants who decide to come live in Montreal already have french like a second language back in their homeland. Like my parents are from Algeria and it’s considered a member of the french diaspora, my parents knew french way before living in Quebec. Yes their’s a special culture in Quebec but that same culture have similar references that you can find outside of Quebec like in Boston or Toronto. Besides the french tongue a white Quebecer isn’t that much different culturally from someone who is from Toronto, New York or Boston. I want to also add that having Montreal as THE city for special effects (CGI) and Videogame production isn’t helping the french situation. Because Montreal is the reference in these industries, that are mostly english because of Hollywood establishment, it’s certainly not helping by attracting thousand of english international workers who wish to work in the movie industry. In the end, it’s getting so expensive living in Montreal, a lot of citizens from diverse community are moving out of the big city to live in « banlieue » where it’s more calmer and less expensive. Is the city having less car and more bikes. It depends of where you live. If you are in a district outside of the main neighborhoods in MTL, like Anjou, Lasalle or Rivières des prairies not having a car can take more then an hour to get in Downtown or in the center of the city by bike or public transportation. By the way most of the resident that live in these neighborhoods are Italians, arabs black and asians.
This is a perfect comment. I’ve been living in Montreal the past three years and honestly, the debate about preserving québécois culture often feels like a load of sh*t, meant to cover up a different sentiment. I’m left leaning and before I moved to Quebec, I really admired the solidarity of Québécois people and the way they organize themselves to lean consistently to the left. But I’m also Iranian born, and even though I am fiercely secular and not Muslim (and even though I’ve spent over two decades as a Canadian citizen), I feel that people’s treatment of me changes dramatically when I tell them where I was born. I’m getting a little bit sick of this language debate, because there are so many bigger issues facing québécois culture that have more to do with the economy, and they’re not going to solve those problems by being hostile to “les autres”.

Welcome to Montreal. Montreal has always had this culture between the french and english. I grew up in the 80's in Montreal, it was like that then and has not changed since. That is the essence of living in Montreal you must be open to a different point of view. There are so many diverse and multicultural community's through out the island and that is what makes it so special. Keep exploring. Great video.
You are on Masson,the street where I live since 2018 as a newcomer to Canada.As to answer to your video question “how many languages you speak?” ,I do speak : Romanian my native language,fluent english,fluent arabic(2 dialects) ,french advanced level(I work in french,even though we do have anglophone patients) and some italian. lmao the French language thing is a hot topic for sure. I went to college in MTL and a classmate gave a presentation on the language laws Quebec enforces and how they're discriminatory (ex: funding French schools more than English schools for one) and damn, class discussion afterward was wild.
I think you got this wrong: english schools are much more funded than french schools in Québec: 12% english receive 30% of funding, which is really unfair!
@@philippelandry5209 Idk her sources were cited properly and approved by the prof and from the year 2018. I doubt it changed that much. I don’t see how this is possible though. Growing up in Gatineau, the English schools are dilapidated as heck. The French high schools all had pools, electronic scoreboards, turf on the football fields, bleachers even, none of which we had in the English schools, but that’s just an anecdote.
I want to add that people also growing up only speaking English in montreal have a hard time finding jobs here. Their options are very limited and with the new language laws, it's even more difficult now. You cannot be a simple busboy if you only speak English, but if you only speak French it's permitted.
Guys please don't think that racist nutjobs such as the one above are representative of life in Montreal in this year, this isn't the 90s anymore, it's rebecoming more and more international with the universities and companies with people moving in to work.
@@dancooper1 I never said it's unfair, I simply said there is a reality that English speakers in Montreal have a hard time finding a job. However unlike Mexico and China, Montreal or Qubec is not a country and is still recognized as multilingual, Mexico and China are not, Montreal is still a part of Canada meaning everyone here should be bilingual. If you speak only English you should learn French and if you speak only French you should learn English rather than insist everyone speak only French in a bilingual provence. I ‘m born and spend my life in here now at 37 years old, and you ‘re absolutely right concerning our préoccupation to conserve the french language!! And i can tell this thing for sure, even if there other reasons, that one of the major fact is that Québec is the only french province in the large country of Canada!! It would be interesting if you made a video about the French situation and the tensions and how your opinion has changed. If you feel confortable doing that, I think that would be fascinating. I personally feel that language is important because that's how you pass on culture to the next generation, it's a part of you, it's linked to your memories, your loved ones, most of the things you cherish. That's why it's important.

Have you done a video in Westmount & NDG? They're both extremely blessed with huge trees and beautiful architecture, and the wealth & elegance of the houses in Westmount is astounding. The views from Upper Westmount, wow! Good videos, keep it up!

Preserving the French language in Quebec goes beyond employment considerations. Quebec has its own cinema, music and theater traditions. It is difficult to preserve these arts when the province is literally surrounded by English culture. PS: I grew up in St-Michel and Rosemont.
Je m'ennuie de Montréal. Si les Canadiens se rendent en finale, je vais venir écouter un match en ville et faire un vlog là-dessus 🏒🏒❤ (je suis à Québec & soon to be in Vancouver). Appreciated your point of view. When i was in Vancouver at first doing French vlogs, i would get the occasional odd comment "Why are you speaking French here?" and i'd be like, um, because it's my language lol! I've struggled as to what language to make my vlogs in. 95% of my audience is anglo, and i'm very fluent by my 1st language is French and i didn't want to feel like i was abandoning my culture. After 2 years of pondering it, trial and errorb i keep it bilingual, adding subtitled and either mixing languages or choosing one that's more appropriate to the content or location. Surprisingly, a lot of anglophone viewers comment they love it when i speak French! I'm about to do a couple all French, Eng subtitled ones as i'm in Quebec now. Heading to Vancouver in August, will revert to English (but with subtitles available in both) and the occasional "all French today vlog". Oh, and.. Picking a random metro station and exploring is one of my favorite things to do... Have fun... There are 47 of them! ❤
I liked that you showed this part of Montréal, so often do I see people in videos about Montreal, show off westmount and then the mile-end neighbourhood (the mostly english speaking ones) and say "that's it! That's all of Montreal!" Maybe I'm a bit biased, it's my neighbourhood after all :)
Why a person would seriously ask why a population want to preserve its culture is beyond me. Everybody from everywhere always try to preserve its culture, isn't it? But that don't mean a culture don't want to transform or to evolve. That's not the same thing. That said, I would ask an other type of question : Why a particular culture want to impose itself over an other? Here, I'm not referring to the english culture vs the french culture, but to the money-over-everything culture vs every other cultures that exist beside that particular paradigm, which some english community in Québec are in, to name an exemple. Pour changer de sujet, et de langue, bonne vidéo sur Rosemont! J'ai habité le centre-ville de Montréal ses dernières années et ça me donne le goût d'aller vers ce quartier! C'est si paisible et calme. Mais j'aime le centre-ville quand même. Bon printemps ! ^^

Its sad as an Australian we havent looked more to other commonwealth countries for inspiration but leaned more towards the crass side of America and this is after starting out with English roots.

I live in Rosemont and a street away from the start of the video and there are lots of things to do. I am an English speaker but have all the fun in the world
i love your videos i think montreal is a unique city, because its french and english there is a mix of european and american, i haven't seen other canadian cities that much, I've been to toronto in 2002 so i don't know it that well, but montreal has more culture, the food is great, the jacques cartier bridge is a beautiful bridge, you can run along the river, music shops, nice cafes, I've never been in the winter, I've always been between may to august, i do remember in may 2013 the first 2 days were warm and then it was windy and cold, but in june montreal is amazing
It's so funny, I used to live right on the other side of these train tracks about 9-10 years ago and would use that hole in the fence all the time! hahaha
