You might want to know that a famous French Canadian author from Saint-Boniface, Manitoba, Gabrielle Roy, published in 1945, an award winning novel (Governor general, Fémina, etc.) about the working class people of Saint-Henri. The title of the novel is Bonheur d’occasion. It has been translated in English (The Tin Flute). There is a museum in Saint-Boniface dedicated to Gabrielle Roy. Your Mom and you should look that up one day. (Talk about making a full cercle! 😉)

Jean-Francois was refreshingly balanced when it came to assessing those condos. They are indeed for the newly wed and the nearly dead, the land value has gone up because it's so close to downtown and the bad reputation the area once had has given way to the reality that it's a great location right next to a canal. The canal used to be a negative, it was a heavily polluted industrial strip in the 90s, but is now an awesome green corridor (just don't go swimming). All is not lost though, among the towers there are quite a few few co-ops and other forms of low income housing, all those towers have also added thousands of units which have helped alleviate the housing supply issue in other parts of Montreal.

This is the crossover I need: Paige Saunders and Dan from The New Travel. Both of you guys have such interesting perspectives about this city (or province), and that sort of open mindedness (not sure I got the spelling on that right) is really refreshing.

I ve been living in the hood for more than 30 years. Once upon a time there were more families but families often move to suburbia when then can afford a single family house. St henri goes through ups and downs. It gets gentrified because many places where not kept up. It is wonderful to see old architecture being invested in and preserved for posterity. It is more diversified than many areas of montreal, English, French and everything in between. There are poor, rich, old and young. Beautiful parks, restaurants ,old and new and new boutiques. Montréal is attracting many foreign students because of the many universities in both French and English. Graffiti is something new. It started about 15 years ago and let s hope it is the end of it!

Did you know the full name of Saint-Henri is Saint-Henri-de-Westmount . St.Henry(of Westmount) However Saint-Henri was poorer than Westmount like you said was down the hill while Westmount stood over the neighborhood. Also The French Novel Bonheur d'Occasion wrote by Franco-Manitoban author Gabrielle Roy was going in Saint-Henri-de-Westmount during Wolrd War 2.

Great video Dan, as usual. After visiting Montreal I can't get the city off my mind, I hope to live there some day. I need to convince my fiance that Montreal is a great place to raise a family. She is interested in single family detached homes. I would love it if you could make a video about some of the more family oriented neighborhoods and maybe talk to someone who is raising a family in Montreal so we can understand the real experience.
@anne12876
@anne12876 2 года назад
Many neighbourhoods in Montreal are family-oriented. My friends with families live in Rosemont (it’s a huge neighbourhood), Villeray, Ahuntsic or Verdun. Only downtown and Griffintown are not well-suited for families.
@arcane7298
@arcane7298 2 года назад
Montreal is the best place in Canada to raise kids. The day care is really cheap. We just paid $7 per day, and college tuition was only $70 per semester. The University tuition is the cheapest in North America. Also, extra curricular activities, like sports and arts programmes for kids are often free, unless you choose to send your kids to a private school. I only wish the housing on the Island was more affordable, but it's better than Toronto.
@Nature_with_Peter_Kane

You better think twice or three times about moving to Montreal. So many anglophones are leaving, young and old. Over half a million have left in the last 40 years because of language laws. As are new immigrants to Canada that have arrived in Quebec first. This is all due to the strict French language laws...look up Bill 101...and now Quebec is passing a even harsher French language bill 96 I think it is. My friends have told me all about this.
@tylerhatch8962

I remember Saint Henri being a poor and rather rundown and depressing neighborhood circa 2001. The gentrification phenomenon is recent. A friend of mine comes from there. His mother's house is modest... And it is now surrounded by luxury condo towers.

Yeah this area isn't getting gentrified fast enough, it's kind of better than 10 years ago, but still, St-Henri can be a dangerous shithole at night. A good part of that neighbourhood has barred windows, that tells you a lot about an area. You clearly only visited the nicest streets and during the day.
