What are cartridge technologies? How do they affect the performance of the cartridge, and, most importantly, how does it affect your listening experience?
In this video, you will learn about four cartridge technologies, how they work, and how they can improve the listening experience. Leif Johannsen, Ortofon's Chief Officer of Acoustics and Research, will take you through the physics, and you will get to understand everything about:
1) Split Pole Pins, which is about magnetics, and how to reduce the loss of energy and, as a result, reduce the loss of the musical signal.
2) Selective Lazer Melting is about making houses with no unwanted vibration.
3) Field Stabilizing Element, which is about improving the properties of the magnetic field in the moving coils and, finally
4) Wide Range Damping is about enhancing the properties of the rubber suspension system in the cartridge.

In Chapter 1, you can learn the difference between a Moving Magnet and a Moving Coil and how the systems work differently. Watch the video here: • What Makes a Cartridge...

Thank you for this really interesting video, made with a lot of love to explain in detail the technical and physical details. It becomes clear to the viewer the precision with which the first and probably most important link in the analog vinyl playback chain was built and works - I love it

I have always wondered about what kind precision the cartridges are manufactored with. Yes, we know about the various profiles of the cartridge tips that excist but with what precsion are it all mounted together? All these instructions about how to setup a cartridge, often is related to sighting angles, even from the housing of the cartridge. Must be some large faults possible there! Judging angles by eye is a very crude way... Do we know about the precision during the record cutting process or how well it is setup?

So that FSE is silver plated. When stored for a long time, is there a risk that the silver starts to oxidize?

Hi, a question that I could so far not answer to myself is how the interface of the armature to the magnetic system can mechaically work. Can the armature be just be pulled out of the damping system (20:56) and is so to say sticked into the damping system? Or how is the stylus held back and prevented from falling from the damping system? This is not glued, right? Or is there a metal pin going through the whole suspension which is finally attached to the rear pole piece? Maybe a better way to ask that question: what element carries the weight pressing on the needle? Is it the suspension element or the pin from behind? If the weight is carried from the pin from behind I ask myself how it is achieved that the rotation point is exactly between the coils, where you (ideally) want it to be. Because you want to avoid parallel/ tangential movement, as it is not at all paying into signal height.

Where can I get p mount Ortofon stuff like an OMP10 or 20 Cartridge, and then a 20 or 30 stylus. Seems to be much confusion in the market about p mount and manufacturers current level of support. I think I will buy only p mount and use adapter's for different mountings / tonearms to avoid this incompatibility going forward. Thanks.
