This stuff is some of the reasons that you can prevent panic attacks to some extent by making yourself have physical symptoms of a panic attack. Spinning to get yourself dizzy or jumping to get your heart rate up and out of breath. Your brain will then attribute these symptoms to your activity instead of a potential oncoming panic attack. This actually has some empirical support and many people report it actually helping them. Thanks James and Lange.
@chrysalizubeth88
@chrysalizubeth88 6 лет назад
Psych Ed But you can also induce panic attacks with physical arousal.
@psyched1639
@psyched1639 6 лет назад
Yes, arousal misattribution is confusing and fascinating. In clinical psychology as well as dating. The important thing seems to be confidence in one particular attribution. If you spin on purpose to induce dizziness, experiencing dizziness is expected and the attribution is simple. If you walk up stairs to meet a potential date, then the elevated heart rate could be interpreted either way, but perhaps people would rather not think that they're out of breath from stairs for the sake of maintaining self-esteem. I'd be curious to see if self-compassion or unconditional self-acceptance moderates the misattribution in that study. But I'd expect physical arousal to induce panic attacks more often when it's not obvious, or perhaps even embarrassing or threatening to self-worth that the arousal came from physical activity.
@jazzhandshidea
@jazzhandshidea 6 лет назад
I do sometimes drink a ton of coffee when I feel panicked, so I think of that as the reason for a racing heart. Not sure how effective it is.
@psyched1639
@psyched1639 6 лет назад
jazzhandshidea The trouble with coffee is that it does induce a small amount of anxiety, which I believe (should double check with a neuroscientist) that it has to do with the chemical properties of caffeine, but it may also be that the physical symptoms are detached enough from the cause that misattribution causes anxiety
@anonymouslearner2454
@anonymouslearner2454 Год назад
@@psyched1639 I wonder how much being aware that one is trying deliberately to use such activity to avoid attributing symptoms to panic attack plays into the picture. Like one part of the brain refusing to be tricked by other part of the brain if that makes any sense...

I was originally favouring the Canon-Bard theory but after hearing the Schachter-Singer theory, I’m starting to open up to the latter. Because of medication (or maybe my health), I sometimes get elevated heart rates and start sweating heavily. My first reaction is usually “what am I worried about?” I then realize that I’m not worried because there is nothing to worry about. Perhaps it is just us labeling physiological responses as such

Thanks, I'm pleased to see this. I was just thinking about this topic and how some question if other animals can feel emotions. A solid definition of emotions is a pretty important first step in that process.
@ryanliberty
@ryanliberty 6 лет назад
I agree with Jaak Panksepp's affective neuroscience which proposes that there are primary emotions with a basis in neurological systems which then can be mixed with our thoughts to create more complicate and nuanced emotional experiences. Emotions and cognitions interact but emotions hold more "power" in the relationship being located in lower and older areas of the brain.

From the experiences of myself and others in the more alexithymic parts of the autism spectrum, i want to say this makes the most sense. There's enough of a cognitive basis to it that it's easy to narrow down what you're probably feeling and why, but it's more like shooting a paintball at a dartboard, you're never going to be as spot on as an nt person. Like I still can't disentangle anxiety, boredom, and frustration in certain contexts, and it took me years to even understand that i wasn't just feeling one.

Good start with introducing the main theories of emotions and touching on the difficulty in defining/measuring them. There really should be a part 2 though. The James Lange theory has been modified since its original conception and the modified version is more widely accepted by researchers of emotion. Despite difficulty in defining emotions, there are some generally agreed on requirements for something to be an emotion, such as it must be present across all cultures (although the acceptability of expressing is may vary be cultural norms) and must be innate. It would also be beneficial to talk about the limitations of self reporting because of people's different perceptions of questions and perceptions of the strength of what they are feeling, as well as the importance of self reporting despite limitations. it would be good to talk about some of the main ways researchers measure physiological responses of emotions, and which responses tend to be consistent for certain emotions, even though these measures aren't perfectly reliable. Managing emotions would is also important. Many people don't realize the things they do that actually increase negative emotions and all the ways they can manage negative emotions in a healthy way.

I believe this is what happens (normally): We experience something, we have a "thought or belief" about that experience. If the experience is perceived as negative or positive the brain reacts accordingly by producing chemical signals that make us physically feel something, & we label it as an emotion. However there are signals that we consider misfiring because the person isn't feeling how they're thinking, or is feeling a way not related to how the experience is expected to make them feel. This could be a mutation in DNA from birth, based on dietary inputs, sensory inputs, or many different kinds of chemicals in our environment. Knowledge is key!!

I'm going to use my personal experience, so this is all anecdotal. Although I think I may be on to something,I believe thoughts and feelings are two components to emotions, that is to say. I believe emotions are the entire response of your brain and body. I think three of these models are true at the same time. I'm going to use abbreviations T=F is thoughts to Feeling, F=T is Feeling to thoughts, and S-E is Spontaneous Emotions. What I've noticed is T=F and F=T occur slower than S-E. I have lackluster coffee tolerance, so if I drink one cup too many I might feel anxious what I realized is that I had no anxious thoughts proceeding the anxiety, and the anxiety would affect my thoughts, I also realized early in my practicing of meditation the thoughts that popped into my head would affect my feelings I found meditate when I had unfocused and/or depressive thoughts. I've always known about S-E, I think the vast majority of people have S-E usually in times of distress, terror, or euphoria, your body would feel and your mind would race at the same time, or very very close to the same time.

Emotions are initiated a very primitive area of the brain. Affective Neuroscience has brought us much closer to understanding them by looking at animal behavior and brain stimulation, even identifying seven core emotions that are shared between all mammals. Emotions are "messy" when we study them in humans because once they originate in the hypothalamus, they can be processed by the neocortex and our language ability, which in turn can create feedback (new stimulus) which kicks off new emotions. Essentially, chasing our mental tails.

I think this is one of those areas where psychologists might benefit from studying those with disorders, specifically alexithymia (and by extension autism, because there's a lot of overlap.) I'm convinced context has something to do with emotion because I spent years suffering from anxiety in school and frustration at home because I interpreted it as "boredom" only... just one example. I'm also sure there's chemical and neurological reasons bc how else would depression be depressing, etc Anyways i suppose the therapist joke with "how does that make you feel?" Is a bit more complex, huh?

First, adress this: e-motion. Prefix e meaning outward, and motion, meaning movement (in this case reaction). We can actually change the order in which we percieve these things, sometimes even simultaneously. My point being, that an individual is technically able to experience these 3 in any order, and that order is situational. Given a relaxing moment of silence, you can think about a feeling you've had to evoke an emotional state. Activities in life that require you to be aware right now often go in order from feel external stimuli, think, emote. Of course one may also feel, emote, then think (impulsive behaviors). Last, an individual may experience an emotion that is induced by stimuli that the individual is unaware of (subsonic sound is a prime example of such stimuli). Due to the lack of awareness, that individual may address the cause of the emotion by working through their thoughts; thus bringing awareness to the feeling that is responsible for said emotion. If this does not make sense, please give some feedback. This ability is what makes self efficacy possible, and without it, individuals may often feel helpless, or as though their life is not in their control.

I find that it is thought that precedes reaction. For reactions such as a black widow landing on your shoe, the thought process is pretty quick. 1. Stimuli: See black widow 2. Thought: Bad thing! 3. Reaction: Kick it off!!! I became fully cognizant of my response after the fact, when I had time to think about it. I guess it depends on the situation. Bodily reactions can influence thought process, and thought process can influence bodily reactions. Ultimately, I think that feelings and emotions are not dissimilar. When I feel angry, it is because I have had time to process what was said or done. 1. Stimuli: Someone said something unkind. 2. Thought: That wasn't nice! 3. Reaction: Become angry! I think that for most people, these things all happen without them really being aware of the thought process. So, it can feel like the emotion came after the feeling. Are there things that can cause a primal response, possibly. Though, I think out brains have to process the stimuli through our thoughts and knowledge. Though, the transition between the less cognizant feeling, and the fully aware emotion are somewhat distinct. It is mostly about being fully cognizant of a reaction that your brain has already come to.

Basically there is a whole world that oppose a lot of these cognitivist views that became popular and have dominated psychological theory for decades. But how can we explain the Homunculus problem?...or the degrees of freedom problem? I had a course on this and loved it. SciShow should give their 2 cents!

3:23 I'm not sure a label for a physical response is necessary for emotion. People with low emotional intelligence, for example, are probably terrible at accurately labelling their emotions. They get physical responses, but aren't aware of it, or attribute it to the wrong reason, rather than their own emotions. I think stress is a good example, since a lot of people are so used to being stressed out, they just think their painful physiological responses (weakened immune system, fatigue, muscle aches, etc) are normal and don't even realize their own emotions are hurting them. This stress likely manifests in their mood too, making them irritable. Also teenagers especially tend to be awful at labelling or even identifying their emotions. They don't know what they feel or why half the time, hence why it's such a confusing life stage. I don't think a lack of awareness or proper labelling makes a feeling just... disappear and stop being an emotion that's felt. It's very much there and making you emotional either way
