We catch up with Paul Denning, Pata Yamaha's team principal to get some insight into the anatomy of a WSBK Superbike.
From the lightweight carbon replacements to the legalities of what they are allowed to change on the engine, this gives us a little inside info.
Special thanks to Yamaha, WSBK and HMCA.

I love that he mentioned the fact; unlike other motorsport, there's no communication with the rider other than the pit board. Very human sport, not based on team management & input into the machine. Excellent explanation, great vid.

He was so good on camera and very detailed in his replies. I was concerned about whether I'd annoy him with basic questions since my bike knowledge is very limited. Glad to know we were able to put together something helpful :)

I think that behind all the knowledge he obviously has, was a genuine interest and enthusiasm for what they are doing which then spilt over into him having an eagerness to share the information. As a WSBK, MotoGP fan and allround motorcycle enthusiast who spend a lot of time restoring and tinkering with motorcycles I found the interview informative and entertaining.

I thought that the superbikes were more like slightly modified stock super sport bikes. But from a 20 thousand euro to 150 there are a lot of mods which i never imagined they actually do, and the weight difference is mind blowing.

Fantastic chat between you two guys........cant believe its 5 seconds between road and superbike, a huge difference in racing terms but as an R1 rider myself it makes me kinda proud that without any formal trainning and having passed my bike test at the first go that I'm in control of one of these beast's. Not quite at those levels but pretty quick on the road without suggesting the police should look at me......wink wink.

I love when racing is as fair as possible. Everyone runs either the same or very similar stuff making the racing close but as fair as it can be and that's incredibly important to keep the racing exciting but gives everyone equal opportunity to win.

Great video and much respect for the Yamaha director. The only thing I frown upon is the "only 5second" per lap gap remark between the sbk and a regular R1M... These bikes are worlds apart from the street bikes we buy no matter the rubber we put on. Those 5sec feel like an eternity on the track. The average person may take the further step to think that by the same standards a 600Supersport "is just" a bit slower than a 1000Superbike.

Appreciate the comment - as a demonstration Alex Lowes did a 1m43s on a standard 2020 R1M around Jerez recently... Just 2 seconds off average WorldSBK race pace this year. A lot to do with the rider however, as many journalists were just over 1m50s mark.
