On the vinyl version, the "waiiiiiiiiiting" line is a locked groove so it just keeps going until you stop the record player. It's so creative and really capitalizes on the unresolved musical theme running throughout this album.

I really loved your analysis! "We're In Love" is actually a song about their friendship and platonic love for one another which I think makes me love the song even more

I just have to add this because it has actually become my favorite part of $20. At the very end you hear Julien belting what kind of sounds like nonsense, but I decoded it, and she is singing: "Wait on me, I'm not ready. I still have to change, have to change, have to... Wait on me, I'm not ready. I still have to change, have to change, have to-" 💔

Small note here -- in Emily, Bridgers is employing an AAABCCCB rhyme scheme in her verses, so the near-rhyme you're calling out (talk and Montreal) probably isn't part of her formatting (in which talk is near-rhymed with lost). The near rhymes in that song (concrete/screaming/spiraling) are in fact amazing, which is what matters. I too am obsessed with the record.

This is a really great analysis. There was some online drama from another reactor this past week with some really lazy takes, but this really does a great job of highlighting how good some of the songwriting choices are. @@DanoMakesMusic just a heads up on boygenius lore, Letter to an Old Poet is a direct response to the song Me and My Dog from their ep. It has a lot of leitmotif things going on, but specifically the ending and the “I wanna be” phrase. The album seems to be a reconciliation of their mood from the first album, and focused on queer friendship in the face of being a “sad girl songwriter”. I love these guys so much, their music is amazing.

Meter and structure analysis is awesome and super interesting. I guarantee you, though, that there was zero thought about meter or devices while writing. It's 1000% instinct and influence that is analyzed later academically.

The first song is so bad I almost did not get to the next one, which is quite good, especially after a minute and a half. Very bad grandmother church choir feel. Fleet Foxes did it so much better.

Great album except for the Leonard Cohen song by Lucy :/ Quoting Cohen's own song "Anthem" and using his melody lines, but at the same time calling him an old man (he was 55 when he wrote that song), and reducing his transcendent words to "horny poetry" is so so wrong lol. Also not sure what Buddhists think about Lucy insinuating that going to a buddhist monastery equals having an "existential crisis" as she writes in the song. Maybe for an atheist any spiritual search looks like a crisis. As you can tell this one really bothers me, lol. But I love other songs here.

i really don't understand why people find that lyric so offensive. it was just a silly tongue in cheek thing. and he *was* an old man who wrote horny poetry! just a fact, not a dig whatsoever. 🤷‍♀️ i think the point of the lyric is that they have very different life experiences and perspectives but she agrees with his words and they resonate with her as well.

I just don't think it's all that respectful to make a joke of out a very thoughtful poet in order to have a "clever" line in a song, named after that poet and borrowing some of his words and melody at that same time. I think Lucy is better than that. It's like a click bait song basically.
