BAKU - From the battlespace of Europe to the borders of the Middle East to East Asia, the Soviet Union and the United States did battle for the supremacy of the world. Millions of peers who inhabited the 20th century considered it a fight for the end of history. Both powers used every means at their disposal, including nuclear bombs, military, espionage, finances, propaganda, cultural ties, and many more asymmetric tools. It is curious as to how human beings placed themselves at such jeopardy, not only with willingness but with anticipation. Neither side had an exclusive franchise on the calculated risks. Nearly everything the Americans and Soviets designed had an art of dying but was an excuse for living for this was the geopolitics of the Cold War.

Perhaps but the significance of geography decreases over time due to numerous factors like technological innovation and demography. Greenland's vastness doesn't make it powerful if it doesn't have the population to exploit its natural resources, staff an army, or simply scale its economy. You can't buy/sell stuff from/to people who don't exist. You can't exploit natural resources that are too expensive to extract. Of course, you could argue that natural resources don't move so these could be solved by immigration and further automation in mining and hydrocarbon drilling businesses. This brings up an important counterpoint: natural resources don't equal power or wealth. There are many kinds of wealth not derived from natural resources, meaning you have to weight your power by the importance of your resources to others and weight that by the proportional control you have over the world market. And just because you have natural resources, doesn't mean you can automatically use this as economic leverage in your relationships with other nations.

At 54, I'm old enough to remember the Cold War. I do not think that either the USA or USSR were expansionist, but both feared that the other was expansionist, so felt the need to be offensive out of self-defense. The main effect of the cold war was a series of hot proxy wars (and not-so proxy wars where at least one of the superpowers were directly involved in conflict), of which the Korean and Vietnamese wars were the best known, but also includes the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, wars between Somalia and Ethiopia in the 70s, the Iran-Iraq war of the 80s, the Angolan civil war, various dirty wars in Central America, and so on.
@Millz194
@Millz194 5 лет назад
Alex Plante the Somali-Ethiopian war is kind of an oddball of all of the conflicts as they both aligned with the Soviet Union so Ethiopia didn’t believe that the Soviets would actually back a side, how weird could it get?
@atlas42185
@atlas42185 5 лет назад
Both countries were definitely expansionist. For the most part this was only in terms of influence, but the Soviets engaged in plenty of territorial wars in early decades. The Soviets and later the Chinese had varying degrees of belligerent policy toward non-socialist governments. The US and presumably many of its allies were varying degrees of belligerent toward socialist governments. This basically meant "if you're not with us you're against us," which implies that "we are going to interfere in your politics until you are 'with' us." Sounds pretty expansionist to me.

At 54 years you most likely just remember what the end of all the game looked like. If USA's game was pretty much the same all the way till these very days, then USSR been changing all the way. At first USSR was most likely ignited by germans to make Russian empire collapse within itself, they used it as last resort cause they knew that it's gonna be a risky thing and so it proved to be. I personally just astonished with what progress it was - such an economical rise: thousands of industries rise almost from nothing, it truly became a superpower in a matter of 30 years, defeating Germans along the way. The real pivot point was 1964 - after Stalin is gone USSR begun to dissolve into lazy clumsy shit. Social and economical progress made before 1964 didn't just died instantly, it kept everything going for few more decades, but without stern leadership it just been falling to pieces within itself until it finally collapsed. And so were it's geopolitics. USSR openly and for most part very pathetically tried to grasp onto whatever it could, trying to force it's ideology in places where people hated it, until it's internal problems became too serious to give a shit about anything. USA is another matter entirely. It doesn't annex other countries - it doesn't has to, doesn't needs to. Manipulating other countries indirectly and at some hard cases - directly. They played this game all the time and they keep on playing it now. It works so well that nowadays no one knows for sure what is what. The whole geopolitical picture of the world looks so absurd that I would suspect USA been pulling strings on everything so hard that even USSR itself was it's puppet. At some point you can say they played a nice game making world such a quiet place without wars unless you live in today's Russia or it's former allies that economically look much worse than Germany was by the end of the war or in one of those european countries full of nothing but hipsters, feminists, homosexuals and multiculturalism. I'm just saying current geopolitical map of the world, as much as economical and political system of most countries look like literally shit and it hard to believe that USA has nothing to do with it. And stop kicking Russia, it can't even produce a decent car nowadays, it's just a huge territory with miserable people. It's gonna have to rebuild it's economy entirely from scratch like in 1920ies before it would pose any geopolitical threat larger than annexing another useless piece of land. It's military power looks like something only because Europe and other countries look militarily pathetic too. China on the other hand.. having a very powerful economy and epicly large amount of inhabitants it can be turned in absolute military superpower at some point.
@Alex_Plante
@Alex_Plante 5 лет назад
@@samhamsord7942 You're essentially right. 1964 was an economic turning point for Russia also because they had reached the limits of the kind of industrial development undertaken since about 1930 - i.e. development of heavy industry and basic infrastructure. After 1964, if the USSR wanted to catch up to the USA they needed to develop consumer goods, services and technology products, but you just cannot do that effectively in a totalitarian police state.

@@ohamatchhams; Stephen F. Cohen will tell you it's a new Cold War. These things you mention and not disputed as facts in any sense, and are not related to Russia except in an oblique way. As to your position of a continuation of "The Cold War", rather than "Cold War II", would be more reasonable if you mentioned Clinton's bombing of Serbs in Yugoslavia during the Nineties, a slavic people and traditional ally of Russia because of history, culture, and religion. I respect your opinion but I don't think we went into Afghanistan for the purpose of isolating and containing Russia. Russia wasn't against the initial deployment, and they actually assisted our military with clearing flight paths and intelligence. Remember, Russia has had more jihadi terrorist attacks than the U.S., although none as big as 911, but they've had more. I could be wrong, but when Bush 43 invaded Iraq, I don't think it was a move to isolate Russia, although Russia was against the invasion they only had a small presence in the area. When Obama and Clinton led from behind to depose Muammar Gaddafi in Libya it appeared to Russia as complete jackassery, as we previously had a good relationship with the Libyan Government. Syria is a completely different situation, as Russia has strategic interests there, but remember, the Cold War ended in 1989, and Obama started supporting ISIS, and calling for regime change of Bashar al-Assad not much earlier than 2011. If Cold War II is just a continuation of Cold War I, than there was a big time gap, and a massive ideological change by Russia from Communism to Capitalism, and from Atheism to Orthodox Tradition. It doesn't matter that America didn't change (I think we did change), it can't be considered the same Cold War because Russia radically changed, culturally, economically, and Russia is not the Soviet Union geographically. The Soviet Union was much, much, larger and it was a bipolar world. Call it what you want, but London is responsible for this Cold War, I can prove it, and this is the important thing we need to focus on, not the name of it.

Very solid video that uses base theory to overlay the cold war. Great thing is that you can take the base theories explained in this video and continue to apply them to foreign policies enacted by countries today.

Excellent video. Dugin covers alot of this in his recent on his channel and devotes a class to mackinder and the explanation of heartland Rimland theories as well. Very even handed analysis not favoring either ideology which both seemed to be in a state of imperialistic world domination.

I actually once took part in a model UN that took place right after the fall of the Soviet Union. We literally followed the balkanization strategy mentioned in the video. It was surprising for me to find out that idea of balkanization of Russia has been thought of in past.

I just picked up on this Channel today...it scrolled down from some Peter Ziehan I've been following for awhile. To tell you the truth you tell the truth, and I'm sure your content is stifled if not censored outright in certain spheres of influence. Which means you're doing it right. I'm impressed.

The Cold War was a war by any other means. Ironically it was the only war we won since WW2. As a Cold War Veteran (US Navy), we never received special medals, parades, and recognition. Sadly Cold War veterans are denied membership in the VFW or American Legion. The only reward we can take away is that our loved ones are not dead or suffering from a nuclear holocaust.
