There was one strikeout he got on Joc that was so indicative of this. It looked like it was going to be in Joc’s nuke zone down the middle but it wound up on Joc’s fists and he didn’t stand a chance.

Do you think this is what made Pedro Martinez so dominant? A.k.a. his height and release point
@v2micca
@v2micca 9 месяцев назад
It certainly didn't hurt. These were elements of fastball composition that were not intently studied in Pedro's day. But, if you compare Pedro in his prime to current day Spencer strider, I think you might find a lot of similarities in their mechanics. They both use the drop and drive technique from their arm side leg to get as far down the mound as possible, thus giving them elite extension on their release points. Pedro also had a low release point, but tended to use it to get more arm side run on his fastball instead of vertical movement. But, while Strider can generate better velocity than Pedro, he's never going to be able to match Pedro's command. And, (remember these are simply personal aesthetics) Pedro's diving change up to me remains just one of the most beautifully filthy pitches in the history of the game.

Thanks a ton, as a fairly casual fan, I wondered about it, I knew that he released farther out and had rise on his fastball, but I wasn't aware of how the low angle makes it even harder to hit. So 98+ with late, extended release, at low angle, with tremendous rise = a flat bullet that people can't pick up on, catch up with, or make good contact on. I'm actually curious about how all the different variables come together to make a good pitch/pitcher. Like why one guy's slider gets crushed and why another's is great. I have an idea on many, and some stand out as great pitchs, but the total breakdown is very helpful

Strider has a real shot at 300 Ks and 500 Career Ks this year.
@v2micca
@v2micca 9 месяцев назад
Eh....I think a 300 K season is increasingly unlikely for 2023. As I type this, Strider is sitting at 227 K's over 25 starts and 146.1 innings. At their current pace, the Braves are likely to clench their division and home field advantage at some point in mid September. So, I would not be surprised to see Strider's last two starts of the season be capped at 3 to 4 innings and 65 pitches. Realistically, I can't see Strider amassing much more than 40 additional innings for the rest of the regular season. Maybe if he's close to some milestones they let him go to 45. Its going to be really unlikely that he can accumulate 73 k's in his remaining starts.

It's amazing how 2-3 MPH makes such a difference. When he's pitching 97-100 he's unhittable but when his FB dips to 94-96 it's a totally different result.
@v2micca
@v2micca 9 месяцев назад
I think it is more than just velocity. I've seen him throw some pretty unhittable fastballs at 95 and 96, while seeing some of his 97 and 98 offerings get crushed. His fastball is at its best when he is getting that near level approach angle. Sometimes you can see, when he is fatigued or just slightly off on his mechanics, he's not getting that forearm to move through correct plane from the high cocked position, so he doesn't get all the efficiency from his backspin on his 4 seamer. That is when he tends to get tagged. On a side note, there is a reason that the 2022 Mets would give him such fits. They had a lot o players in their line-up that had success with a more level swing. Whenever Strider struggled against them, it from death of a thousand papercuts.

Enjoyed watching the video. I do wish that he’ll revisit the conversation about command though. The times he seems to get hit is when his command isn’t great. If he can get elite command with his stuff, he has legit hall of fame potential. Thanks again Ninja. 👌

Spencer's brilliant pitching advice from another angle: throw pitches with priority of making your misses look intentional. When the hitter thinks you're on even when you're not you're already in their head.

Strider is my favorite pitcher in the league outside of maybe Brayan Bello (I’m a Red Sox fan so I have a natural affinity for him) but I do worry that his unbelievable velocity is going to kill his arm and prevent him from having sustained success. Would others agree about that high risk or are there other factors in Spencer’s favor that I haven’t considered?
@ifithrewmyguitaroutt
@ifithrewmyguitaroutt 4 месяца назад
Three other factors to consider: 1. Strider has already had Tommy John surgery, and it affected him greatly. He revamped his entire wind-up because his old one led to TJ surgery at such a young age, so I imagine his new delivery was created with longevity in mind. 2. To that end, he derives most of his power from pushing with his legs, which are just super strong. That's not really known as an approach that puts lots of stress on vulnerable ligaments. 3. He's not even throwing at max velo. When he first came up, he'd regularly hit triple digits, but these days he may not even hit 100 for a whole start, and that's intentional.
