The Cars were different from the guitar-oriented rock bands of the late 70s, because they incorporated many different styles to make their music stand out- especially their use of synthesizers to blend with art rock & rockabilly influences. With the incredible vocal duo of Ric Ocasek and Benjamin Orr, as well as original members, Elliot Easton, Greg Hawkes, and David Robinson, the Cars were one of the first true power pop rock bands, and helped usher in the New Wave synth era of the the late 70s and early & mid 80s.

Keep the music alive!
The five original members of The Cars were under-rated musicians that thankfully got their due, when they were inducted into the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame in 2018. Let’s be clear they should have been first ballot shoo in.Their performance at the Hall of Fame Awards Ceremony was their last live performance as The Cars.
The Cars formed in Boston in 1976, and songs from their self-produced demos began to get significant airplay on Boston radio stations. They signed with Elektra in 1977, and were initially labeled as a New Wave band by the industry.
The Cars were different from the guitar-oriented rock bands of the late 70s, because they incorporated many different styles to make their music stand out- especially their use of synthesizers to blend with art rock & rockabilly influences. They were one of the first true power pop rock bands, and helped usher in the New Wave synth era of the the early & mid 80s.
I’m going to highlight my 5er by The Cars, but before I do that,I want to single out each of the 5 original band members of The Cars, and recognize their enormous talent:
*Benjamin Orr: Co-lead vocalist and bass guitarist. When the Cars played “just What I needed" on The Midnight Special in 1978 He is the epitome of cool. With this Non Chalant, like a midwestern Bowie, Orr could wail so effortlessly he was just so rad.
*Elliot Easton: Lead guitarist. Easton should be mentioned in a conversation about the best rock guitarists of all time.
*Greg Hawkes- Keyboardist. Greg was another invaluable part of The Cars sound. He was a pioneer of technology and sequencing. Hawkes had a signature style, that included the ‘Prophet 5 sync’ that was very prevalent on The Cars songs “Hello Again” and “Let’s Go”.
*David Robinson- Drummer. Besides his superb percussion work, David designed the album covers for The Cars, and after his semi-retirement from the music business after the band’s breakup, David became an accomplished entrepreneur, who makes and sells his own jewelry, among other ventures.
Here is my 5er by The Cars:
*#5 “Drive”- This was a gem of a departure by The Cars. A song Ocasek wrote about a down-trodden ex-lover who is self-destructing. “Drive” was the highest charting song by The Cars- rising to #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1984. It went to #1 at Adult Contemporary in the U.S., as well as Canada, and was a Top 5 smash throughout Europe, including the UK, Germany, and Ireland.
Benjamin Orr sang lead on “Drive”. I believe it was his 2nd best vocal performance, subtle and hypnotic. Sad and so affecting
*#4- “Moving in Stereo”- Co written by Hawkes and Ocasek. The song has the cadence of an creepy dream sequence from a psychodrama. It was intended to draw parallels of a stereo recording and real life- in essence, “moving in stereo” through life. “Moving in Stereo” has one of the most memorable song placements in a movie ever- the pool scene in the classic ’82 comedy Fast Times
#3- “My Best Friends Girl”- From the beginning guitar and hand claps, this song is impossible not to immediately participate in as a listener., Written by ric Ocasek He said of the song: ”Nothing in that song happened to me personally.
#2- “Just What I Needed”- The breakout hit for The Cars and the first single from their epic debut album. The song was composed by Ric Ocasek while he was living in the basement of a commune in Newton, Massachusetts. The opening guitar and drum exchange in the intro of the song was inspired by the 1968 bubble gum pop tune “Yummy Yummy Yummy”.
#1- “Let’s GO- It’s unfair how perfect this song is. From the second this song starts and you hear that distinct Wa wa wa keyboard, it’s gonna be a good day. I can’t tell you how many times this comes on when i’m diving and i almost run off the road because when it get to the end of the chorus, I have to do the hand claps. the claps followed the shouted "Let's go!", is derived from the 1962 song "Let's Go (Pony)" by the Routers.

The Cars produced one of my favourite songs of all time. I believe it can stand alone as one of the greatest rock recordings ever. And it's not on your list... the song is 'It's All I Can Do'. My understanding is it may not have been popular amongst the bandmates, but damn it's a beauty. The perfect example of how each member contributes to complete The Cars package. Ben's vocals are emotive with longing, the guitar string effect building the tension, the big drums hitting your chest and keeping the beat, the keyboards sweep with such beauty and power, and Elliott drops the most proficient and creative sweeping solo he may have ever recorded... right into the pocket, backing vocals are on point, and almost forgot to mention the brilliance of the fade out at the end of the song. The call and response of the guitar, from one ear to the other. Brilliant! So good. Certainly on a level up high on their very own. The Cars are a treasure.

When the Cars came out, it was like nothing I had ever heard before! I am more partial to the 1st 2 albums that came out! I couldn’t get enough!! I had the albums and the 8 tracks of them. Album for my stereo and 8 tracks for my car. So many memories of teenage and college years. One of my most favorite bands of all time. Got to see them in concert in the 90’s at the Richmond Colliseum I Richmond Va. Every single song they sung in concert and on their albums was a hit to me!! Not one bad song in the bunch!!!

I find it VERY frustrating when guys talk about greatest guitar players of all time and NEVER mention Elliot. I play guitar, and I can figure out licks and solo's by Eddie Van Halen, Slash, Vai, and Satch fairly easily...but, when it comes to learning Easton's licks and his solo's...I have a LOT of trouble getting it right. The Cars were my first "favorite band". They showed up right when I was looking for my musical identity and they fit perfectly. So many great songs-- I loved the hits. I loved the B-sides. I loved the deep cuts that no one else got into. I could never compile a 5er I'd be happy with, but I can list a bunch of perhaps underrated or widely-unknown songs from them: "Panorama" from the album of the same name-- Despite some "not so great" production on this album, a lot of the songs on Panorama are killer. I love the energy of the album opener. And the video is Beastie Boys "Sabotage" before it was a thing. "I'm In Touch With Your World" from the first album-- Maybe not unknown, but I think under-appreciated. No samplers back then-- this song is total studio fun-housing, with timpani, foley sounds, and that weird whistle that goes "ffffwwweEEEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeee!" "A Dream Away" from Shake it Up-- A trance-like drone song that always transports me back to being awake way too early in the morning, walking around outside in the pre-dawn mist. "It's Not The Night" from Heartbeat City-- Really liked this song and wasn't sure why it didn't get more airplay (was it even released as a single?). The live performance of it from their Houston show is really great. Notable for the fact that it's one of the few Cars songs that features Ben and Ric trading vocal duties during the song. "Think It Over" from Shake it Up-- It's got one of those signature "weird Cars sounds" going, which I love. The song itself is totally catchy, if a bit repetitive. I never really noticed that aspect until I got older. I just grooved on the... groove. My answer to the question of "What is your favorite Cars song?" will always be "The entire 2nd side of the first album, in order, uninterrupted. As God intended."

STORY TIME! I top-5 them (kind of) at the bottom of this. Let's Go was the first song by The Cars that I ever heard. I remember where I was. Back seat of a Plymouth Arrow with my cousin, with my aunt and uncle driving us from Denver to California in the summer of 1979. My uncle had recorded a bunch of songs to cassettes from KAZY ("The Rock of Colorado" was their slogan) and Let's Go was on it. I must have heard it a dozen times on that trip, and oh did I love it. It's been my all-time favorite ever since. And The Cars have always been my favorite band. They were just... different... from all the WXYZ/CKLW/Dick Purtan top 40 radio stuff my parents favored at that time, different from everything else I had ever heard. I went out looking for that song when I got back to Detroit from that summer trip to CO & CA, and I was 12 and testing my mom's patience as I pawed through the record bins. I ended up with the first album on vinyl instead of Candy-O, which I did not find that day. THAT 2ND SIDE! And that was after a first side that was as hooky and awesome as anything I had ever experienced. I had discovered my first rock band that was all my own, in terms of how I learned of them myself and discovered their sound without the influence of parents or the light musical peer pressure of my friends. I still play the 2nd side of the first album in that order whenever I am jonesing for some Cars. I think it was some time before I found Candy-O since I was so happy with The Cars debut album. What a hard band to top five. Too many awesome songs. But #1 is always "Let's Go" for me if for no other reason than the visceral memories it brings back for me. Really their first three albums were for me music perfection. I liked Shake It Up less than those, but then Heartbeat City was top of game again. Never got into Door To Door at the time it came out, but it grew on me in later years. I don't hate their "Move Like This" album, but without Ben, it just was off for me. I play it now and again, but I have always favored Ben's singing by far over Ric's. Ric's quirky vocals (always been my description, too) are just as important to their sound for me - no knock on his singing. But BEN. My top 5. With an asterisk for that whole 2nd side of the first album. All Mixed Up (5d? this one had to grow on me for a few years. Who can figure out early teenage music tastes though.) Moving In Stereo (5c?) Bye Bye Love (5b?) 5) You're All I've Got Tonight (but really, the whole 2nd side of "The Cars" is one long continuous play, as it was intended) 4) Dangerous Type 3) Candy-O 2) It's Not The Night 1) Let's Go

The Cars are a musical icon of "summer" to me. When I got my first vehicle and could go wherever I wanted to, whenever I wanted to. I lived in the Bay Area and drove to Sacramento to see family and I blasted their first album I had on cassette down I-80. Funny thing is, the B side of that album from "You're All I've Got Tonight" to "Bye Bye Love" to "Moving In Stereo" to "All Mixed Up" blend seamlessly together and it's difficult for me to listen to them separately or out of sequence. They have to be played one right after the other as they were recorded on the album or they're just not right to me. I'm just weird that way about that album. Love The Cars...

What I like about The Cars are the dueling lead vocals & harmonies. Elliot Easton is an ace 🎸 player. My favorite album of theirs " Panorama " is vastly underated. Give Roy Thomas Baker credit , his Production was amazing on their early albums. Brilliant band.

He also produced Bridge of Spies by TPau which propelled them to a US number 4 hit with Heart and Soul and then success in Britain and the rest of Europe after the song was used in a Pepe jeans commercial in America. Home country success in reverse to the usual order of things.

Panorama is an acquired taste. I didn't like it first time I heard it. It was what I call a "experimental sound" album. Every band has one. Panorama was this album. I listened to it in the 90's. Almost thirty years later I gave it another chance. It's great!

Drive is not just my favorite Cars song, but one of my favorite songs overall. I knew that Benjamin Orr was the lead singer on that one Because it sounds so different than so many of their other hit songs. But I didn't realize until years later that he sang on so many of their other hits as well. I don't think that his and Ocaseks voices sounded similar, but so many of their hit songs have a common flow that you instantly recognized as a Cars song when you hear it.

The Cars is one of my very favorite bands of all time forever. I was gutted when Ben and then Ric died. Their music got me through some seriously uncertain times in my life. They were the joy and the color of life right when I needed them. So many of Ric’s songs are embedded in my ears and heart for good. And his and (especially) Ben’s vocals are as familiar to me as the sound of my own breathing. And the other guys as well, David’s great drumming and outstanding graphic sense for the band, as an aesthetically-sensed person, I just love it. Elliott is one of rock’s most underrated guitarists, I particularly adore his “a dozen licks in one” guitar solo in my #1 favorite song of theirs, ‘Tonight She Comes’, and then there’s the band’s musical secret weapon, Greg Hawkes, from his atmospheric synths on ‘Drive’, to his “bag of tricks” sound effects and synth combo on ‘I’m In Touch With Your World’, to his beautiful sax solo closing out on of my very favorite Cars tunes, ‘All Mixed Up’, which seemingly echoes Ben’s gorgeous, tender lead vocal. Unforgettable. And that’s what this band is to me. RIP Ric and Ben. Thank you kind gents for making the world a better place. Edit: My 5er: 5. ‘Bye Bye Love’ 4. ‘Fine Line’ 3. ‘Drive’ 2. ‘All Mixed Up’ 1. ‘Tonight She Comes’

As I recall, The Cars released the absolute coolest "We're done as a Band" type of statement in 1988... At that time, I remember hearing a local radio DJ in Minneapolis, read The Cars Press Release on air... (BTW, I'm paraphrasing here) He said; "We re done as a band.. We don't think we're cool anymore -The Cars" I remember smiling, & kinda laughing to myself, as even in calling it quits they were pretty dang clever... I've scoured the internet to find proof of this -can't seem to find anything to back it up. There's only my memory of what I heard... Best "band break up statement" ever

Cars are one of the most underrated bands of all-time. I'm glad they made the Rock-n-roll HOF. Well deserved. There music is some of the most underated off all-time. Their music videos were very unique as well when MTV first started. I expected them to last a long time but they ended in the late 80's. My fiver is different but I respect yours. Drive is my all-time favorite. It has something about it that it gives me chills but it carries emotion to it. Something about it seems final. Correct, Ben did not write any cars songs. After Ben’s successful solo album came out (lyrics by Ben and his girlfriend Diane at the time), and Ben asked Ric if songs he was writing with the GF could be used on a Cars album. Ric had an absolute “NO” to that. And thus started the riff between the two.
