Thanks for the insight Pat. Do you know why on the SMX control when a tapping event is entered the actual depth entered in the event is not where the head taps to? It does not go to the programmed depth.

Hi Jim! I know there is a tolerance of +0 but I believe there is also a tolerance of about -5%. Because the spindle doesn't have an encoder, the motion control is doing it's best to go to the final number without overshooting but it happens so fast, it really doesn't know if gets there exactly. During our testing it was pretty close. If yours is off by a lot, please check with the service department in case there is a different issue causing this. They will probably want to know what size and type of tap you are using. They will also want to know the RPM you are running at as well as what material your are tapping. T.P.

Do you still have all the features on the 2 axis control like adaptive machining

Adam, yes it does however, because of the way adaptive machining works, you will have a few check z, set z commands while it's cleaning out a pocket. Other than that, all of the options are the same in 2-axis as they are in 3-axis. T.P.

can you use a tap cycle G84 on the RMX????

@matthewbarrett2419, The answer is Yes - Where S defines RPM and Pitch = S / F T.P.

These are very expensive, why would anyone buy these if you can get proper CNC machines at a much lesser price

Hi, Sunil. Thanks for the question. I believe you get what you pay for. With TRAK machines, you get equipment that is made to last. You get commitment from our in-house software and applications team to build ProtoTRAK controls with the features and performance that machinists and operators need. You get the know-how of every designer, engineer, builder, tester, inspector, technician, sales rep, and customer support specialist built into every machine. And you get the support of a company that has spent decades refining products and services for benefit of their customers.

@@TRAKMachineTools thanks for replying, i don't intend to demean in any way, but your logic of long lasting quality, commitment, features and new developments goes well for all those CNC manufacturers as well who are much cheaper than you and still prevailing in market for many decades

I think the fundamental approach is different. TRAK machines are designed more for toolroom and precision use. The machines that are cheaper than TRAK machines also lack the rigidity and overall build quality that I've found TRAK machines to have. At the lab I used to work at we had a TRAK mill that was one of my favorite machines just because of how stiff it was. With cheaper machines the control is less intuitive, you have to be more conservative, and they don't have as many of the fancy features that TRAK has.

@@zachbrown7272 please correct me if I am wrong, Proto Trax are relying more on their control software than their hardware. No doubt their machines would be very accurate and rigid and meant for tool room precision. But if you compare the cost of their machines and other precision tool room machines , I guess you would agree what I mean ..

There is a reason nearly every tool room in the usa makes use of prototrak lathes and mills. They are probably the best solution for one off, job shop, tool room type use. You can have a trak machine cutting chips before your PC even boots up to load your cam software. Very very fast and convenient machines these TRAKS are.
