Bravo for sticking up for the 7th Generation Celis! I'm a very active 76-yr-old woman who just bought my dream car -- a 2001 Celi GT with 32,000 miles on it. Incredibly great shape, original owner always kept it garaged, drove it only in summer. I fully realize I have died and gone to Celi Heaven by finding this car. I have no plans to sell my '95 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4x (298,750 miles), since I do a lot of off-road exploring and boondock camping. So, the Jeep for serious road trips, the Celi for play and plain foolishness 😉

I had an '82 GT liftback Black Package and loved it! At the time I had a long drive to work over rural back country roads so I upgraded the lighting. I installed SEV Marchal non-sealed beam 100W high beam, 60W low beam, Off-Road race/rally headlamps, foglamps, and 100W pencil beam driving lights. On the way to work I would turn on to a long flat road that was 4.5 miles long. If I turned on the high beams and the 100W pencil beams I could see the stop sign at the T intersection at the end of the road. More importantly, I could see the deer in the fields on either side. My nickname for this Celica was "The Deer Hunter" - In total it killed two deer and seriously bruised another.

Small correction, the 5th Gen Celica (2nd Gen GT4) by winning 3 WRC driver's titles and 2 WRC Manufacturer's titles was Toyota's winningest car and the one that made the Castrol livery popular among rally fans, not the 6th Gen Celica (3rd Gen GT4). The 6th Gen Celica (3rd Gen GT4), was also set for glory. It came close to winning the 1994 WRC Championship but was caught with a modification in the turbo restrictor in Rally Catalunya, which banned Toyota from the WRC. Upon inspection, the FIA president considered the cheat "the most ingenious thing" he had ever seen in 30 years. This made the car known among some fans as the "banned one" Great video nonetheless

@RedlineVulpine

7th gen is arguably the best one. Surprised you didn't mention the 2ZZ-GE engine, as it was so good that Lotus used it in the Elise for half a decade until Toyota simply had no more of the engine to give. Cylinder head designed by Yamaha, cam phasing at 6,000 RPM, redline at 8,300RPM, safely revs to 10,000RPM by only changing out the valve springs. 7th gen weighs 2500 pounds, 700 less than the 6th gen GT-FOUR... that is two super sport motorcycles. Power to weight ratio wise, this means the least powerful 2ZZ-GE 7th gen with 180hp (it was 190hp everywhere else in the world) is only slightly less powerful than the most powerful 6th gen GT-FOUR, 144hp/ton vs. 157hp/ton, and in 2006 Japan got a 200hp 2ZZ-GE which would be 160hp/ton. That 700 pounds makes a massive difference in handling also, as there aren't even really any cars that were made at the time or made since that weighed so little. Even the modern Mini Cooper S and Fiesta ST weigh at least 200 pounds more. I guarantee that the 7th gen will EAT the 6th gen around turns on dry pavement. All of that and it still has four airbags. I've owned various vehicles over many years including an NA MX-5, B7 RS4, and various super sport motorcycles. My 2004 Celica GT-S is my favorite car that I've ever owned!
@arcanevoid9199
@arcanevoid9199 Год назад
valve springs are not enough to rev to 10k safely, and the 200hp trd sports m was made in 2000. and not every 7th gen has air bags, japanese models dont but you can get factory LSD and superstrut
@RedlineVulpine
@RedlineVulpine Год назад
@@arcanevoid9199 Yeah I mean, if you break it down logically you at least also need some tuning to get rid of the fuel cut off and to hope to actually make power, but AFAIK only the springs need to be upgraded so as to prevent valve float. Not many people are only going to upgrade springs while they are in there though. If there are some Celicas without airbags then I'm guessing they weigh even less than the claimed 2500 lbs of my US market model... but that is not a car I would want to drive daily. :P

Man I wish the US market got the 3sge in the GT models but all we got was the 5sfe which has a measly 130hp straight out of a low spec camry, I bet the only reason Toyota gave the US the 5sfe was because it had a 2.2L displacement, and they knew Americans care a lot about the number of L and that Americans wouldn't pay the GT premium when it only adds 0.2L despite adding almost 60hp over the 1.8L 7afe making 110hp (I have the 7afe in my 6gen which has a little bit of character but pretty pitiful). Might want to add a typo correction. You said 2.6L inline 4 at 3:28, it was the 4M-E which was an inline 6. Still great to see videos appreciating this once mega seller. If you look back to 85, 86, etc you can see it sold crazy numbers for an import sports car.

In the 70s, some chevy camaros in California had 90hp, because of the regulations. Most other in the states had 115-140ish if I remeber correctly. All cars were underpowered then

My first car was a rusty 1977 Celica GT 5 spd. A few years later I bought a 1981 Celica GT 5 spd. That was a great car, put a bunch of kms on it. Sold it and bought it back a few years later. Skip ahead 25+ years, I bought a 2003 Celica GT 5 spd, but it wasn't what I wanted as it was a bit too cobbled together. Got rid of it. Now I have a 2003 rust free Celica GT TRD 5 spd that doesn't see winter, and minimum rain. It's fun, corners great, more power than the old ones, even though it doesn't have much power compared to everything else on the road today, but I don't care. Celica never was about hugh power, with the exception of the turbo models. Supra was the model with hp. Celicas were always sporty-looking, decent handling, reliable, and good on gas cars that were fun to drive and to look at.

My neighbour has 2 beat up third-gen hatchbacks (A white '84 GT and a red '85 GT-S) parked in his front yard, maybe I should try to buy one of them, since I absolutely love the Celica, especially the third-gen. Another quick note about the A60 (3rd gen) In Japan, There was a homologation special version of the Twincam Turbo Group B Rally car called the GT-TS. However, the engine would not make as much power as the actual rally car, for obvious reasons. The road version made around 180HP. Another note about Celicas in general, Usually the GT model is like a mid-trim level, below it being the ST and above it being the GT-S. Also, something funny is that in Japan, the 3rd-5th generation of the Celica had a trim level called the GT-R, but it wasn't like Nissan's. The Celica GT-R was just the trim above the normal GT in Japan. For the 3rd gen, the GT-R had the 4A-GE engine which can be found in popular platforms like the AE86 and the AW11.

Now the 7th gen Celicas are skyrocketing in Price. Celica GT-S's are getting even more expensive and hard to find, although they weren't as liked as much as the previous generations it's still has that 2zz powa.

Was in the position to buy a 7th gen Celica but it had over 400.000km on the counter... did came with all the maintainence history but I passed on it. Instead I bought a Mazda 3 sedan 1st gen 2.0lt with have the km's. That 7th gen Celica looked pretty good up close tho...

Top tip: if you want your 7th generation Celica to really handle properly, pull the C64 gearbox out, strip it down, and swap the open differential for the hellical LSD from the last generation MR2. It goes straight in, and, with some decent aftermarket coil overs (aim to lower the car approx 35mm), you'll find yourself driving something not dissimilar to an Integra Type R. Go on, try it, it's great 👍
@arcanevoid9199

isnt celica c60 not 64? and wouldnt you be better off buying a new quaife lsd instead? also some 7th gen celicas have a facory lsd, and i would say a superstrut 7th gen is alot more like a integra type r
@jasonkillbourn
@jasonkillbourn Год назад
@@arcanevoid9199 No, here in the UK I believe it's the C64 in both models of Celica, which was also used by Lotus, in the Elise. I pulled one out of a standard vvti Celica, back in the summer and did that diff swap (at least that's what the workshop manual listed my 6 speed box as). Anyway, those diffs are interchangeable into any of the C series gearboxes (5 and 6 speed variants alike). The decision not to use the Quaife LSD, was a combination of cost and the fact that those Toyota LSD's are well regarded for being very robust and they work beautifully. If you search about, they do come up for sale here and there, and it can save you £500 (enough to cover the price of a stage 3 clutch and lightweight fly wheel, which you might as well do, while you're at it), on top of which, if the bearings on the LSD are in good shape, that can also save you quite a bit of money over the Quaife option, just don't try to swap your open diff bearings over, to save on buying shims, as it's very easy to wreck them, no matter how careful you are with your bearing puller (don't ask me how I know that 🙄). As car mods go, it's got to be the best bang for your bucks, as you really notice the difference, powering out of corners. I am told those diffs transfer up to 70 percent of the power to whichever wheel is finding the most grip, and, after driving the car extensively before and after the swap, I have no reason to doubt that.

Here's a bit of a story about Celica appreciation, I bought a 1983 Celica when I was a 19 cause I thought it was the same as a Celica-Supra...it's not. Some years later I bought a 1990 Mk3 Supra, from a guy in WA in 2015, and when I came to pick it up he said he was selling it cause he needed cash to finish his 1976 Celica and the Supra didn't run. I got to see it in progress and I literally asked him if he would sell me the Celica instead of the Supra. I bet most people today couldn't imagine going to buy a Supra and when you get there asking to buy the Celica instead lol. I still have the Supra though, and for $2,500 I couldn't really pass it up. Mostly because it's high mileage and needed an engine, but minor body dings but no rust at all. Now with a 1JZgte (from 7Mgte), reupholstered interior, suspension, brakes, wheels & tires, upgrades to outdated tech and because it's a US model(LHD) it's worth about $20,000-$25,000. I might still buy a Celica one day though.
