This week, I’ll be trying what is currently dubbed as the UK’s most expensive rail journey, Heathrow Express’ Business First Class! At a fixed price of £32 for a single regardless of how far in advance you book it and which discount cards you use, this gives a price per mile of £2, only exceeded by the Luton DART which officially launches on March 27th and isn’t a National Rail service! Why is this such a rip off? Find out in this video!
Journey details:
Date of travel - November 2022
Operator - Heathrow Express
Train - Class 387/1a “Electrostar”
Origin - London Paddington
Destination- Heathrow Terminal 5
Price - £32 (Anytime First single)
Thanks for watching and hope you enjoyed the video!

I’m cabin crew and use the Heathrow Express to commute. I agree, I’d never pay for Business First as it seems barely any different to Express class. Great video. A top tip I have for this journey is to sit in Express by the Business First doors in the carriage as it’s guaranteed to be less busy, because the outside of the carriage implies it’s only Business First inside but it isn’t, so fewer other passengers embark there

Time is money, and $32 although expensive, the business travellers and those that can afford the ticket price will pay it, just to get into town as fast as possible. I've used the service a few times, and loved the fact that 16 minutes later you're in central London. Oh, and back in the late 80's early 90's sitting on the tube to Heathrow and stopping at every station along the way, or getting the slow Greenline coach service was a real mood killer. As a former semi-frequent HEX user, I'll add my 2 pennies... I used to use HEX a lot - at least once a month. Luckily, by BA Gold card grants me access to the Business/First carriages for the price of the standard class. However... I live in Cambridge. Where previously to get to Heathrow by train I would have to go from King's Cross to Paddington via tube then get the HEX, I now get the Thameslink from Cambridge to Farringdon, where it is a very easy swap to the Elizabeth Line, direct to Heathrow. HEX consequently have now lost one formerly semi-frequent passenger to the much cheaper Elizabeth Line. Yes, the Elizabeth Line is slower to Heathrow from Paddington with more stops, but that is more than made up by convenience and time saved by not having to change trains twice. I cannot be the only one who has abandoned HEX for the Elizabeth Line. I expect Heathrow Express to slowly die as a result.

Although Swanley/ orpington/ bromley south has fast 15-20 minute services to london bridge/ victoria, the timetable is not efficient imo. My proposal: Bakerloo extention to Lewisham then tunnel to terminate Hither green Overground extended to Slade Green, then looped back to lewisham via charlton South eastern ONLY on the crayford line and the main Sevenoaks line, and NEVER calling at lewisham I would argue BML2 is more useful than the original elizabeth line, or rather should have taken place at the same time, and similarily a "BML3" but croydon to brixton then Oval (alhough that would have been alot more expensive, and its the NLE that should have happened) Similar to how Tfl would take over south eastern , it could do the same with the west, so now you get frequent metro services from wimbledon to waterloo/ victoria , without a timetable but rather every 3 minutes (different destinations in the opposite direction Now finally ill get to the point i wanted to make, with the much more efficient time tabling, it would probably be possible to have a Heathrow express from Ebbsfleet to Heathrow (via Feltam) calling at ONLY Lewisham and Clapham junction maybe Denmark hill too (so now you wont need the Sladegreen to Victoria, and that would allow more Thameslink services that go through Denmark hill/ Nunhead. Brunel line going to Mitcham Junction could arguably be more useful too ] Sorry for the wall of text

The 745s which are used for Stansted really ought to be used for this. Ideally we'd have an extra set of tunnels & then we could have Heathrow-Stansted service. Although, ironically, their low-floor carriages would make them unsuitable for Heathrow!
@ChilternTransportProductions
I don’t think those tunnels would be in huge demand either, not to mention very expensive and a lot of legal hassle to build

@@ChilternTransportProductions Wouldn't just be for airport connection, but for entire Great Western - Great Eastern axis (Stansted - Liv St - Paddington - Heathrow) Note that Crossrail is already rammed, and they want to extend it further. A Central Line relief line relief line is needed.
@ChilternTransportProductions
@@geraiswaiya2347 There is a plan that sort of touches upon what you’re saying but to a lesser extent. This is what we’d now call Crossrail 2 but would have previously called Chelsea - Hackney or Morgan Line It’s more to help relieve the Victoria Line, possibly also Northern and Piccadilly rather than Central Line but would probably also take some pressure off Crossrail 1 by diverting passengers flows changing from other lines ie passengers who would change off Greater Anglia and Stansted Express trains at Liverpool Street could instead change at Tottenham Hale, or Overground pax from Hackney Downs/Central that would also go to Liverpool Street. Crossrail 2 would interchange with Crossrail 1, Northern and Central Line at Tottenham Court Road and provide connections for Luton Airport at the Euston-King’s Cross St Pancras joint station

The whole point of using the 387s was so that they could be based at Reading and maintained by GWR. Rather than requiring a separate replacement HEx depot.
@ChilternTransportProductions
@@geraiswaiya2347 Don’t forget that Crossrail 1 is not running to full capacity. The trains are rammed but they are not the most frequent they could be. They are now every 4-5 mins but are supposed to be increased to every 2-2.5 mins in May, and I suspect could be increased to every 1 minute if really necessary

First class HEX tickets include access to business security lanes at Heathrow, useful during busy / school holiday periods. You need to factor this in. Other than buying a business fare airline ticket, there is no other way to upgrade to fast track security other than cia a HEX ticket. I even once bought a first class HEX ticket just for fast track security without even traveling on it!

Why would you take any class to Heathrow? The whole service is a rip off. By comparison in Madrid if you use their inter city services, you can transfer by train from the Airport to Central Madrid for free! Even if you have to pay its only a few euros. The Elizabeth line gets you further into Central London if you are a tourist for half the price. And if you really are on a budget you can get the Piccadilly Line to Central London with multiple stops in the tourist zone. Paddington
@Marcho978
@Marcho978 Год назад
1) As a passenger, you don’t get to make use of the free wifi, TV and newspapers in the 20 minutes onboard. 2) When they say that the train goes to Central London, it only really takes you to West London. Central London would be where Big Ben, Southbank, Shard is. Unless your final destination is in paddington, you are likely to still have to trek a little via Circle or Hammersmith and city line to get to the tourist areas of LDN. 3) If you wanted to go somewhere more specific in West London the Piccadilly and Elizabeth lines are a better bet as they stop at more stations. 4) Heathrow Express exists only to con tourists, occasionally some airport workers use it but they have massive discounts applied to their fares making the journey somewhat justifiable
