What Makes This Album Great: Nancy Wilson / Cannonball Adderley 

It's great that you guys include vocal jazz in this series. As a suggestion, how about Aretha Franklin's "Laughing On the Outside", or how about "Nat King Cole Sings, George Shearing Plays"? Or maybe pick and highlight a jazz vocalist from the last 30 years who you think deserves more exposure, that would be cool too.

Coltrane and fusion head hit a little too close to home hahaha. Also please keep doing albums you love! I didnt grow up listening to jazz so a lot of these are still very new to me. Love these videos because they introduce me to new music! Its also far more entertaining to listen to people talk about something they love rather than something they dont care much for

This is a new album for me, I am so excited grab this from itunes and give it listen. It sounds unbelievable. Also, I love this series, I love these discussions, I am learning so much about great music I knew nothing about previously.

I Have always loved this album

Never Will I Marry is a favorite of mine. I love the band's build up under Wilson when she sings the 'No burden...' refrain; however, I don't think there's another version of this song that I can listen to if it doesn't mimic this arrangement.

Amazing Series

These are fun. I had a thought on the Snob-O-Meter. It might not be a popular opinion though. To me, if an album rates high on the SOM, I am not as likely to enjoy it myself. So, rating an album high for appealing to the snobs feels off to me. I think the rating should be how well an album appeals to both snobs and non-snobs alike. In fact, it seems like this is one of the things that makes KOB such a great album. So, something like the Coffee House Jazz YT channel or Kenny G or something wouldn't appeal to the snobs at all, so it would get a very low score, but something that only appealed to snobs like some seriously out stuff would also get a lower score (but maybe not as low). That way an album that would appeal to the snobs AND someone in the lay person category would have the highest rating. My two cents. Thanks guys.

I love this series

This is an awesome episode! I enjoyed every bit of it, save for one comment. As a Coltrane-head and Fusion-head (PDF of my certification will be linked below) I’d like to gently pop open a can of low fat, low sodium, anxiety-free Whoop-A$Z on The Snob-O-Meter. Vocals not being viewed as an instrument is an ancient, Stone Age attitude that was obliterated decades ago! There are just too many thousands of highly skilled, well trained, officially educated jazz vocalists/singers with doctorates now and that attitude was put to rest, why dig up zombies for ignorant slobs who believe they’re true snobs. Three jazz vocal ancestors - Al Jarreau, Abbey Lincoln and Betty Carter (I’m sure we can agree these 3 are not considered “mid-century pop”) are shouting in my ear to “Cut the ish!” If it’s a matter of how good the vocalist/singer is, or their level of musicianship, fine. But judge it the same as you would any other musician. Example: I hate the sound of any organ with the heat of a thousand Suns, but I would not discount the value of an organ as an instrument because I don’t like it. Otherwise, I LOVE the Snob-O-Meter and I look forward to it causing more trouble in the future! 🤣🤣🤣 You know I love you both, madly! 🌍✨💖🪻🌷GALA!

What about taking something on thats a bit more controversial like Ornette Coleman The shape of jazz to come, or something less listened to today but influential like a Duke Ellington suite - Thanks!

When I was a teenager and most of my classmates were listening to Styx and Journey, somehow this album ended up a light-night regular on my turntable. Boy did I luck out. So beautiful. Thanks for the lovely takes on it.

A fine album to be sure (and hard to rate, is it Nancy's or the group's?), but for my money her But Beautiful album is her crown jewel. Superb singing, great players.

What if there were two snob-o-meter scores? One for the snobs and one for aunt Linda, where the album scores 10 if the snobs like it and an additional 10 if the general public likes it too. Of course, some albums are killing but beyond the grasp of non-musicians, so this way of scoring is not perfect either. But I think there is also something to be said for the thought that an album which is liked by both jazzheads and the GP is truly great:) also, GALA and loved this episodee

I like the idea of a snob o meter. What if you did the album Time Out? Although a great album I think it might struggle on the snob o meter.

The only thing I don't like about this record is that I wish Nancy was on every track.

One of my all time favorites for sure. Love that you guys love it as much as I do. I have a bone to pick with the inclusion of composition category though. Most of there tunes are covers right? If you didn’t compose the song why should you be rated on it. Arrangement might be more appropriate of a category for albums that are laden with covers.

Lissening episodes are really good

Nancy Wilson had this beautiful oboe-like quality to her voice. She was absolutely my favorite singer. I like the album she made with George Shearing, "The Swingin's Mutual", even better, although the tracks without her singing are not quite as compelling.

I think more so than rating "lesser" records, id love to hear discussion of something that one of you thinks is great but doesnt resonate with the other.... why is the vibe off, what about someones playing diesnt speak to you, stuff like that. Outright bad records are easy to tear down but the conversation about why something could be good is really what I'm interested in.

For the snob-O-meter- how about 5 points from Aunt Linda, and 5 from a generic jazz snob? Jazz IS a popular-ish music, with some high art pretentions, so wouldn't that be a fair mix?

K.O.B. being a 9 by default doesn't make sense to me with this new ranking. Seems like it loses a point for no reason. If K.O.B. is the best jazz record, then it is a 10, and can only be equalled. Otherwise, why are we comparing it to that and you might as well just have an "overall" category where you rate it 1-10. But since that is the point of this whole system, I think a different category is needed. What about splitting snob-o-meter and aunt linda into 2 different categories? So it gets points for being "jazz snobby" but also points for being accessible to a general audience. Because at the end of the day we want to play music for ears, and therefore want more people to enjoy it. Maybe that is not in the spirit of this ranking system, but just a thought. Love the content either way!!

Snob o meter should be ‘does it appeal to general public and jazz snob’. Broader appeal = higher score / narrower appeal = lower score

You can’t do .5. This is impossible!! You just made a 1000 point scale with your decimals. I know you don’t like to be dogmatic, but the whole Point of a ranking is to have standards. Love the show. GALA forever.

A thought on KOB... tell me if my history is wrong, but isn't one of the reasons KOB is great is that it was the introduction of the new genre or form; modal jazz? So it stands out as exceptionally great because of its innovation and influence. So either... the KOB meter could be about how innovative and new and transitional in the jazz cannon an album is , ... Or there could be a separate category for innovation. But if KOB is about innovation, this album would be lower in that category because while it is incredible in every other category, maybe there is nothing in this album that had never been done before. Everything they did was at the top performance level but just not innovatively new. I might even say a 5 or 6... Or lower? only in the KOB category because of the absence of innovation. But an album like Coltranes giant steps and especially love supreme would be 9 and 10 respectively considering their innovation and affect on the direction of jazz and even culture, much like kind of blue led to more artists writing and playing modal jazz. ... So suggestion; make the KOB stat about innovation and influence. Then there is a way to have a distinction, some albums are good but not innovative. Some are good and innovative. Some might be innovative but not good in some other areas. ... Giant steps would be hard to judge because Coltrane's playing is above 10 but that famously timid piano solo... the lore around that piano solo would certainly help to give it a top score for lore but how would you score the playing? But that is where it could be good to have the KOB be about innovation, then giant steps could be a 10 KOB score because Coltranes playing style on that album influenced so many players of any instrument and giant steps as a composition was also innovative and influential... but it could get a 9 on playing since the rhythm section "wasn't prepared" for the level of the composition... ...so... I might be a jazz snob. ... Hey video idea... "you might be a jazz snob if..."

"One Man's Dream!" Nobody plays it, and you guys lead with it. "Never Say Yes" needs to be played more, too. I think if you're a jazz musician, someone you know has introduced you to this album. For me, 2nd year of college. Incidentally, Karrin Allyson did lyrics to "Never Say Yes" and "One Man's Dream" on her album _Footprints_ . As for Spotify, who cares? They always mess up the ordering intent.

Thanks, a great episode on an album I wasn't familiar with. How about an Oscar Peterson album? But NOT "We Get Requests"! The Trio from 1973? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Trio_(1973_album). This would lose marks in a number of areas, but as Pianists you should review this, it features Oscar Peterson at the height of his abilities, playing only with NHOP and Joe Pass. In my view the greatest drummerless Trio in Jazz history. Come on guys!
