#BeeGees #Odessa #BeeGeesReaction
Odessa is the sixth studio album by the Bee Gees, a double vinyl LP released on 30 March 1969, initially in an opulent red flocked cover with gold lettering. Despite reaching the UK Top Ten and the US Top 20, the album was not particularly well-received, though now is regarded by many as the most significant of the group's Sixties albums. An ambitious project, originally intended as a concept album on the loss of a fictional ship in 1899, it created tension and disagreements in the band regarding the work's direction; finally, a dispute over which song to release as a single led to Robin Gibb temporarily leaving the group.
The album was reissued as a single disc in September 1976 when interest was revived in the Bee Gees' career. Since then the album has gained increasing critical acclaim. It was reissued again in January 2009, as a deluxe three-disc set, and is included in 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.
"Odessa (City on the Black Sea)" is a song by the English rock band the Bee Gees, written by Barry, Robin & Maurice Gibb in 1968 and released in early 1969. The song opened the album of the same name. The song was recorded twice. The first version of the song (without the orchestra) was later to appear on Sketches for Odessa and has a duration to 6:40. The song was about the survivor of a shipwreck, and was originally intended to form the basis of the whole album. Musically it was dominated by strings and acoustic guitar. It was originally proposed to be the first single of the album.

I met a guy that worked in the music business, Arista Records at the time, and he said many people he knew preferred "Odessa" over The Beatles' "White Album". "Odessa" has at least 5 genres of music and all done so well. Barry once said that the album wasn't completely finished, which is why it has a rawer feel than most Bee Gees' albums.

Still blows me away after all these years. I was 19 when this album came out and this song still is as stunning to me as it was then. We are so lucky as fans to have 5 decades of their music to listen to! This is beautiful and yes, Robin's voice is so ethereal and haunting. Just beautiful. However, have to correct you on one bit of commentary -- the Bee Gees were never into any kind of hard drugs. While many other bands famously did a lot of drugs, Barry insists again and again in interviews that they never did anything worse that smoke weed. Thanks for presenting this to us and the breakdown. What a song, what harmonies - their talent was unbelievable and they don't get enough credit!
@TheMusicKingdom

Agreed! Well said. And yes - pills, booze, and weed 😉 meanwhile bands like Chicago were doing psychedelics and cocaine…
@susieq9801

@@TheMusicKingdom - Barry said he tried cocaine once but hated it. He was a pot smoker. Robin got hooked on amphetamines and was hospitalized several times from exhaustion because he went obsessively night and day writing and performing without sleep. He became extremely skinny because it is a stimulant. All three took amphetamines to keep awake and work but he was the one who briefly got hooked. Then he stopped drinking completely, became a teetotaler, stopped smoking, put on some weight and became a vegan, very conscious of his health. Unfortunately he developed a volvulus (the same thing that killed his twin) and then in a weakened condition from that surgery succumbed to cancer which was prevalent on his father's side. None of them used any heavy duty drugs except Andy. Amphetamines, although widely prescribed in the 60's and 70's for weight control and alertness for shift workers, can also be deadly if overused. I was actually PRESCRIBED it in the 70's because I worked 12 hour night shifts. I hated it and stopped after 2 weeks. It made me hyper, reckless and crazy! From Odessa I love "Black Diamond".

Truly, the Bee Gees caught my attention in 1970 when they reformed as a group, after Robin's departure. So ...... Familiar with their entire line of work I have to admit Odessa with its brilliant title track is just outstanding. Also give a listen to 'Lamplight' ! Absolutely brilliant.... I fancy their R & B period as well, like Mr Natural, Main Course, Children of the World, Saturday Night Fever and Spirits Having Flown. All with gems .... Yet the Bee Gees are so much more ... All those different kind of styles from the psychedelic like Bee Gees First.... So many brilliant songs, like 'Alone' Their music, wittiness and personalities have accompanied me along my life's path with so much appreciation and joy ⚜️

Just discovered your channel: A+. I am ashamed to say I have not heard this album yet, but will very soon! I love your appreciation of Robin's stunning voice. The Bee Gees were on long voyages on ships in their youth; when they immigrated from England to Australia and then back to England later. I heard an interview where Barry said on the way back, the ship was in a hurricane. Might have inspired this concept album. I am all in, have loved this group for 55 years since I first heard Words.

Fascinating review and articulate personal and passionate as always Francis. Having lived the Bee Gees growing up in real-time in Sydney in the 1960’s they followed me in my own life to London and then New York just getting more and more massive each decade : a soundtrack to my own more diminutive life. So my thoughts on your thoughts from one in a parallel realm to the Bee Gees. This album Odessa was really Robin creatively branching out. It was also a direct response to the Beatles and psychedelic rock: which frankly they entirely invented. Procul Harum, Cream and Pink Floyd perhaps followed this lead too, but really, the endless mind numbing heavy rock was Rolling Stones driven and utterly dominant at the time. So my point is probably your own: this was niche and it was actually narrative rock opera which didn’t really evolve as a cult until Freddy Mercury and Michael Jackson decades later. Honestly it also anticipates trance. It was an exceptional album for these major musicological reasons. Sheer historical innovation - and bravery.

Since you gave this song such high scores (Thank you for it; I'm a Bee Gees fan since many years, and I love this album) I recommend you the album "The Titanic Requiem" Robin created together with his son Robin-John. When Odessa is the first "attempt" of writing classical music, The Titanic Requiem is in my opinion the perfection of it. I promise it's worth to have a listen into it!

I definitely feel like the album is just as great as other Baroque Pop classics of the era such as Love's "Forever Changes", Small Faces' "Ogden's Nut Gone Flake", and The Zombies' "Odessey and Oracle". Was fortunate to get a copy of the UK first pressing and "Black Diamond" is one of my favourite songs from them. I must say though that "Lamplight" was the song Robin wanted to be the single not the title track, but that song is also pretty lengthy for a single in those days and while I prefer it to Barry's "First of May", I suppose it makes more sense to have Barry's be the single since it has a story that seems to be more relatable to the average public.

Many younger people have no idea that by the time the Bee Gees went disco they already had over a half-dozen very well recieved albums. They lost me with the disco; I wasn't into it at all (but would rather listen to 100 hours of it vs 1 minute of (c)rap and I really disliked Barry's persistent falsetto (still do.) I'll agree that this album is a masterpiece; it's the last album I bought before going into the Navy in 1969 and for that it'll always hold a special place in my heart. RIP Robin, Maurice and Andy.

The production abilities back then were certainly VERY limited compared to today's technology and almost any clown can create something unusual. Was it "muddy" on purpose? Was the vocal perhaps lacking in variety but....I mean, the guy was supposed to be lost at sea and floating on an iceberg that he hopes won't melt! I doubt he would be joyously singing like a bird, but quite depressed. Robin's voice was a gift from the angels. Remember this creativity came from guys who left school at 13, couldn't spell and couldn't read music.

But why not saying to listen to the whole album? Many very good songs to hear! Own it since it was to get. When I play the song 'Odessa', I always continue with 'Marley Purt Drive'. It's a here and there thing, so on the one side we have stunning beautiful leadvocals of Robin, awaking deep emotions which makes you sit down quiet. Opens the ears for the instrumentation as well and there it is, a cello and a spanish-guitar, bringin' in strong elements to level up the mood. And then go to 'Marley Purt Drive' and you'll stand up from your seat so there's a completely different scene coming along. Here, the chestvoice of Barry shines and he puts you out of oceangrounds, up to a sort of roadmovie, makin' your sunday. Often, I contnue with 'Suddenly', so Maurice is askin' there what's to tell by lookin' at him. Glorious bros. Gibb!

Out of their old stuff, I think I liked the Trafalgar song better, but hearing this now, I'm not too sure, because this is just great - so haunting. I think I like the background sound better than the singing strangely enough. I guess it's because Robin has sang this way so many other places, but this background sound is superb.
