Emma, I have been doing this very thing my whole life (I’m 60 now) except I’ve had to muddle through by doing it in my head. This is amazingly entertaining for me and I love that you’ve done it. Wish I had this tool when I was young, as I scratched a lot of records by lifting the needle and replaying a section of the record over and over to try and isolate the sounds in my head. Please keep doing these. Awesome!

Personnel Barry Gibb - lead, harmony and backing vocals, rhythm guitar Robin Gibb - lead, harmony and backing vocals Maurice Gibb - bass, harmony and backing vocals Alan Kendall - electric guitar Blue Weaver - keyboards, synthesizer, piano Dennis Bryon - drums, percussion Joe Lala - percussion The track was recorded at Criteria Studios, Miami, with engineer Karl Richardson. Barry chose to sing falsetto on the whole song, except on the line "life’s going nowhere, somebody help me". Maurice Gibb played the bass line similar to the guitar riff provided by Barry (Gibb) and Alan Kendall on guitars, with Blue Weaver on synthesizers and electric piano. Dennis Bryon, their drummer, had to leave in the middle of the session, due to the death of his mother. The group sought a replacement but as there seemed to be a shortage of 'qualified' drummers in the area, they tried using a drum machine, with unsatisfactory results. After listening to the drum track of Night Fever, the group (and producer Albhy Galuten) took two bars from that track and re-recorded them as a loop, thus creating the song's constant rhythm. [The group jokingly listed the drummer as "Bernard Lupe" - in a reference to session drummer Bernard Purdie. Subsequently "Lupe" became a highly sought-after drummer-until it was discovered that he didn't exist!] The Boneroo Horns (consisting of Peter Graves, Whit Sidener, Ken Faulk, Bill Purse, Neil Bonsanti, Stan Webb, Jeff Kievit, and Peter Ballin) were credited as the horn section. [Apparently, 'Boneroo' is a Cajun word, meaning ‘the best of what is'.]

Very nice to see someone react to the individual tracks instead of the whole song. There is so much richness in doing so; and your enthusiasm is contagious!

I like watching people tour through multitracks on youtube for a few reasons: 1. Also a producer - it's just cool and inspiring before you even get to all the learning, sampling, remixing fun - 2. I collect them like some kind of hoarder, so it's always interesting to see what other people notice that I miss/different insights people have etc Stumbled to your channel on a louis cole/knower reaction spree and this is easy the best stem tour i've seen so far - validating and infectious to see someone just vibing out to them (every producer or even slightly musical person i've met has either done it or continues to don't even pretend you dweebs, live life boogie when possible) It has a lighter less academic feel that some other vids do, which can sometimes be very 'hey dumb everyperson I am a Professional Music Producer and these are what we call in the biz 'Multitrack Stems' and feeling the need to turn it into full on content (which can still be great don't get me wrong) - But this was more about the joy of it, like pointing out POIs as you show an out-of-town friend around a local haunt :) I also just saw in my sidebar that you checked out some EWF stems, so i'm going to disco my way onto that next, subbed!

I enjoying watching this, and your excitement while playing the tracks back. But one of the biggest "secrets" about this song is that the iconic beat was actually a TAPE LOOP taken from another Bee Gees song on the same album and slowed down a bit. Back then, the looping wasn't done digitally, it was literally a long loop that they manually held as it was running around the playback reel and being recorded for the length of the song. Fascinating stuff. Watch this and see: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rLibXNRZt04.html

Great! Clear to hear, Maurice was a monster in playin' bass, not overdoin' anything. And Barry's work on ryhthmguitar is congenial to Alan Kendall on leadguitar.

Amazing rendition Emma - Stayin Alive was certainly ahead of its time studio-wise and is a masterpiece of Barry's falsetto vocals and first more than 22 tracks of terrific studio engineering created by masterminds Karl Richardson and Alphy Galuten, which was just rolled out at the time. In a 2017 poll, this all time classic was ranked #1 as the most played track by all radio stations around the globe by a wide margin. 🔥

Phil Ramone (who also produced Hotel California). The first time I heard this with the kick drum and snare in almost the same EQ: amazing drive. Also the fact that Phil played violin must have added to the great disco feel.

The entirety of the drums are not takes it is a spliced two bar loop doubled from their prior song Saturday night fever. That’s what makes it so unique and crazy. First song in the history of recording to do that.

Now imagine if you were in 1977 and watching this for the first time on a cube-shaped TV and then going to the store and buying the album. I lived through it, and as a 6 year old I remember doing those things. I also have pictures with my disco threads and dancing to the Bee Gees album.

I’ll add that I got ripped off buying a cheap 8-track with all of this album’s songs played by other musicians with a horribly amateurish mix. I should’ve known the cheap price was too good to be true but totally thought I was ordering a bargain-priced Bee Gees album. Btw-I was a gigging drummer by ‘78 and bought my first “Disco Sucks” T-shirt in ‘79, even though I did love playing drums to disco tunes.

5:07 - Is that the "doubled" drum the one that they spliced and put on a loop because Dennis Byron the drummer couldn't come to the original recording due to the death of his mother? The story goes that they credited "Bernard Lupe" on the album, and people were asking for Bernard Lupe when he never existed.

Again a fab video, love the way you find the beautiful mistakes that make the track. Please can you review the mamas & papas ‘I saw her again’. In one bit John Philips comes in too early and sings “and I saw her” before he should. It should have been cut but Michelle Philips said when they heard the playback it just worked so left it in. I love 60’s and 70’s music because you could do this. 80s onwards is all too clean and sanitised. In terms of production and all feels a bit dead to me.

@privatename3621

Technically, "stems" are not individually recorded tracks. The are subgroups of tracks. For example, each part of a drum kit may be individually mic'd, with each having its own separately recorded track. But a stem may represent all of the drums together. Or all of the guitars. Or all of the keyboards and main vocal track. Etc. Pretty much whatever a performer wants to hear in their ear monitors when playing live.

Regarding the questIon at 20:58 (and I'm not a guitarist), did you say MIDI tone? MIDI wasn't invited until about 5 years *after* this song was released, if that helps at all. The tone was likely created with standard but minimal old school gear (filters, etc) to create that clean tone.

Actually the Drum Part is a looped drum part from "Night Fever". They talk about it here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Qf1IaiWXG1Q.htmlsi=g6jDP7P2ZmZvk6XH&t=21 , they actually had to cut and physically make a loop they recorded.

How do you get hold of the stems? Is just loading the actual song into DAW?
@jdrukman
@jdrukman Год назад
Nope. The technology to separate a fully mixed track into its constituent parts is still in its infancy. You’ll also notice Emma has bits that aren’t even heard in the final track (the count-in, for example). These multitrack session files are from the original tapes. They get leaked by studio personnel from time to time. A lot of old catalog music is being remixed for surround/Atmos these days so the original tapes get pulled up and digitized.

Emma I love this video. The drum track is in fact a drum loop cut from a section of Night Fever. Im not sure how they would have doubled in perfect sync in those days. Im really curious to learn more about how they use that triangle, a technique I want to steal. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rLibXNRZt04.html
