What Makes this Film Great | Le Samouraï (1967) 

I love this film. One of Delon's best, although he's been so great in so many others. I never get tired of watching him. I loved your analysis. Great observations. You're very good at this. Thank you.

I saw this movie for the first time a week ago and i'm still thinking about it. I love it. Definitely a must see

There is character growth. The opening scene with him leaving the car running, not checking his coat and hat, killing a man vs the last scene with him turning off car, checking in hat, empty gun. That’s def character growth

Le Cercle Rouge & Le Samouraï are a couple of Criterion's that i paid full price for. Like most physical media collectors or cinephiles, I've heard of the "French new wave" aswell as the fathers of the new wave. But never had a good opportunity to go down that rabbit hole, and still learning, but somewhere or another early on in passing I heard that I needed to look into Jean-Pierre Melville and more specifically Le Cercle Rouge. Once I did, I was blown away, absolute masterpiece. That then lead me down to pick up Le Samouraï. Le Cercle Rouge: Bigger scope, certainly more character development and showing their journeys towards one another. Between the two's legacy, it's probably remembered as Melvilles masterpiece. But for me I've always gravitated towards Le Samouraï. Like you said above, there's just something cool about that film, that character, and that environment. It's no wonder I've always loved Drive. Heavily influenced for sure.

Please do more Alain Delon films. May I suggest: La Veuve Couderc (The Widow Couderc) with Simone Signoret. Or else another AD film such as L’Insoumis (The Unvanquished). Lesser known gems that show more complex sides of this great actor. 🙏🙏🙏

I enjoyed your analysis! 👍 "Le Samourai" is one of my favorite films. I first saw it on TCM and it made an immediate impression on me. You said it, top directors and other luminaries of cinema said it, and I will back all y'all up- The film is the visual equivalent/embodiment/definition of COOL. 😎 For me, I watch this film as if I am actually there and/or in it. I interpret the back-and-forth focusing of the camera in the opening not akin to a dream-like state, more so as I, the viewer, actually being at Jef's flat; having been invited to observe him in a fly on the wall arrangement from there on until his demise. I do not know if that makes a lick of sense but it makes for an engaging, encompassing, and riveting experience
