What Makes This Singer Great? Layne Staley - Alice In Chains
As frontman to Alice in Chains, Layne Staley’s music encompassed multiple genres.
Coming out of the early Seattle grunge movement, he was also later named to Hit Parader's list of "Heavy Metal's All-Time Top 100 Vocalists", in addition to "The 50 Best Lead Singers of All Time" by Complex's magazine.
Staley started making music young and by 3 years old he was already playing in a rhythm band for kids. By age 9 he knew wanted to be singer, writing it in his Dr. Seuss book “All About Me”.
Layne played drums and was in several glam bands before transitioning to lead singer. He would later join the band Sleze which then transitioned into Alice in Chains.
Alice in Chains went on to produce 18 Top 10 songs and five No. 1 hits on Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart.
Though we tragically lost Layne much too young, his greatness still lives on through his music. I’ll be looking at a couple of his performances and I’d love to also hear what YOU thought made him great.

Layne had one of those voices, that I don't think will be heard again. He had this ominous spooky voice, in many songs and yet made it sound so beautiful and melodic. Its sad he left this earth so young, but in such a short amount of time he left a legacy that will never be forgotten. Its sometimes forgotten as well, that Jerry the guitarist and Layne, really sounded amazing together when they harmonized. Especially on songs like Would.

Jerry wrote most of the songs, Layne was just very good at emoting them. Something those grunge guys were extremely good at. Honestly, Layne was not nearly as depressed as advertised. He just had a fatal habit.

Layne had such a nasely whine combined with a gut wrenching wale that will never be reproduced or imitated. Truly an icon of Seattle grunge... there will never be anyone like him again. It breaks my heart that he was so tormented that he had to go out the way he did. 100% legend!

@@waynepuckett5839 covering is one thing. What Layne never gets credit for is creation and arrangement. They say yeah I mean he was goof but he had Jerry like that should discredit him somehow. Or he didn't do it long enough. Well his short time he did enough to make you see if you take a deep dive and dig through all his work. In AIC and outside. Most only see the popular stuff. He was so much deeper and could sing in any genre. Listen to how they made the Mad Season album. He basically freestyled those songs and several of them are damn good. River of Decite, Wake up, Artificial Red among others.

Honestly though, that performance in Rio, Layne's voice is absolutley shredded. By the end of the show he basically had nothing left. And yet, he still managed to put out that herculean effort on basically his hardest song. Any other mortal would just shit their pants and pass out trying to hit those notes if their vocal cords were shot.

First word that comes to me when I think about him is "emotion". The mastery and power of his vocals was amazing but he interpreted those lyrics in a way that made you completely feel what he was singing. If you look at River of Deceit, for example, it's completely different from anything he did with AIC. It's soft and breathy but still super emotional. I'll take a singer with less vocal skills that emotes over a technically perfect singer who doesn't do that anytime. That's what it's all about. Sure wish he would have made it.

What I love about Layne is the AIC Unplugged concert - how he casually came on stage after the band started playing, walked right to the mic sat down and started with that husky voice and beautiful vibrato the "weeeeeee, chase misprinted lines..." it looks so easy, he hardly opens his mouth, yet the sound gives me chills. Also during the whole concert you can see he was at first very reserved, but kind of thawed by the cheers of the audience. The atmosphere is beautiful and it's apparent everybody had a great time.

I didn't know who he was at the time as I hadn't heard of them at that point. He was super sweet and to be honest not the guy he turned into. I was at a cross roads about whether to jump into the beginnings of giving my life to music and he gave me some excellent advice. 26 years later and I'm still working and living as a musician. Love that Layne is still getting attention. There was definitely a significant change between Layne's voice in 1991 (Moore, Seattle) and 1996 (MTV Unplugged)...he was sounding more nasally and his voice seemed thinner in the later years (still sounded great though )I'm guessing it was down to drugs and perhaps not singing in a way which could preserve his voice for longer if there are certain techniques where that can be done? Would be interesting if you did a video about it exactly how drugs and alcohol can affect one's voice, and how the voice can be worn out generally and what techniques a singer can use to not wear out his/her voice.

Thank you Ken for covering my favorite vocalist and the guy who made me want to sing and play music what I love about Layne is his ability to make you feel what he's singing to show true emotion and lay it out there on stage and I like many Alice in Chains songs but four of my favorites are Sea of Sorrow, Down in a hole, Rain when I die, and in my opinion one of Alice in Chains most underrated songs Don't Follow definitely one of Layne's best vocal performances thank you for this video Ken it was awesome PS I saw you and Gabriela do man in the box I loved it you both were awesome

I got seriously into AiC pretty recently, just in time, am I right? I am so impressed with how beautifully Jerry and Layne harmonize together; with the stunning music they wrote to accompany the voices; with how great everyone in this band plays; I also adore how Jerry headbangs with this long long hair! Not to mention how good-looking all of them were at the time! On another note, could you do a video about the vocalist of Virgin Steele - David DeFeis? His band is pretty old and few people know about them (for some weird and unknown reason to me because they are just as epic as Iron Maiden, Manowar and so on). Even though they are inactive now, I think a video on them might bring attention to their brilliant music.

Layne Staley always felt so effortful to me. Some of these amazing singers just always feel like singing comes effortlessly to them. Like they could be doing something else at the same time and still belt out a flawless performance, or they could be thinking about what's for dinner tonight. Layne always feels like he's singing with every ounce of energy he has in him, and I love that. He's also got more of a vibrato in his voice than a lot of grunge singers bring though. Absolutely 100% unique. It sounds like he always has amazing diaphragm support, as you said. Fantastic vocalist.

Layne and Roy Orbison. My 2 favorites of all time. I remember when Layne died, I was truly saddened cause I knew there’d be nothing else. I usually don’t care about celebrity deaths but that one got to me for selfish reasons cause I wanted more stuff from him. I got the same way when Chris Farley died.

STOKED YOU CHOOSE LAYNE! ONE OF THE BEST! The tone and personality on his voice was so soul touching. He really stood out from everyone else in that era. From "I stay away" to "We die young" he could do soo much musically. The fact he sang in a funk rock band before AIC....he could cover so much ground. Could you do a video on Scott Stapp from Creed?!

AIC and AC/DC my two favorite bands. From AIC my two favorite tunes are "Would" from the Staley years and "Private Hell" from the post Layne generation. Not the heaviest tunes but I always love the ones that really kick you in the guy emotionally. They really invite you to listen so closely to the vocals and the musicianship. Interesting how both bands lost their original front man but persevered successfully.
