What Makes This Singer Great? Robert Plant - Led Zeppelin
The journey to Robert Plant's greatness started with his early years being spent in books and with the rocker choosing stamp collecting as a hobby rather than music. In fact, Plant had actually aspired to become a chartered accountant, thanks in part to his father's influence. Leaving school after two weeks of training in this field, he abandoned his studies in favor of becoming part of the blues scene that was becoming popular at the time.
Robert's gig as frontman to Led Zeppelin started when they were known as The New Yardbirds, when they were fronted by Jimmy Page. While auditioning members to be in the group, Page had reportedly witnessed countless musicians try their luck at being the band's singer. In fact, two of the musicians that Page liked included Scottish folk singer Donovan, and Steve Winwood, who would later gain fame as a member of Blind Faith and Traffic. Ultimately Plant was chosen and Robert also prompted Page to select his former bandmate John Bonham on drums after Procol Harum's BJ Wilson turned the gig down.
In addition to his singing, Page was a great songwriter. However, if you were to take a look at the credits of Led Zeppelin's self-titled debut record, you might recognize that there weren't any songs credited to Plant, despite the fact that he actually wrote six of the nine songs on the record. The reason for this is that Plant reportedly was still under contract for a record company different to Atlantic, Led Zeppelin's record label at the time.
Robert's fame sometimes came in handy for him specifically on one occasion when the rocker was attempting to buy a shirt in London's upmarket Carnaby Street. Apparently, Plant attempted to buy the shirt using a check, for which he needed identification. Upon being asked for ID and having none, he instead went out to his car, grabbed a copy of Led Zeppelin's first album (which was, for some reason, in his vehicle), and showed it to the sales assistant, who allowed him to purchase the shirt.
As we look at a montage of some live performances featuring Plant, I'll be sharing my own thoughts about what made him a great singer. I'd love to also hear what you liked most about this iconic singer. Please make sure to share your thoughts!

OMG! Summer of '18 we were up in Tahoe (little more than an hour's drive from our house) for a summer weekend vacation and as we were dropping off my daughter and her friend at their motel near the beach (my husband and I had a bridal suite at Zypher Cove), we could hear Robert Plant as he was giving an outdoor concert a block away at Harvey's! He sounded spectacular! Just like on the radio! I was so amazed!!!!

The first thing that comes to mind when I think of Led Zeppelin is when I saw them live in Sunderland, UK, way back in 1972. Fantastic gig and I still rate it as the best live show I've ever seen. As a side note, I remember reading in the music papers of the day that while on tour in Germany Plants mic went off and the reporter who was standing at the back of the auditorium and he said could still hear plant singing. Powerful!

His dynamics are what has always impressed me most. What Is And What Should Never Be is a great example of dynamics. I also always enjoyed his folk stylings how he pronounces his “r” so strongly. The variety of music that Zeppelin did well is what makes them so great. No other band has been able to do this.

I was so fortunate to have an older sister so I got to hear all the greats at 9 yrs old I'm rocking out to Led Zeppelin, and who didn't crush out on Robert Plant. I've always found his voice beautiful and melodic. Back in 2008 my son wanted to go to a concert I surprised him with Robert Plant, might as well start with the best right lol :P

Plant's voice was a powerhouse '68 - '72. He didn't take care of his voice and by '73 or so he had to have sugery to remove nodules. Supposedly he did not do much in the way of "rehab" after the surgery. In any event, his power and range suffered after that. Especially live.

That's a good point Daniel. Despite Kashmir being the definitive Zep song I think it exposes the problems with Plant's voice at this time.
@khiemvu8667
@khiemvu8667 4 года назад
You are very correct in that his voice suffered following the surgery, which you can hear throughout the 1975 shows. The fact that he caught the flu during the tour only exacerbated his strain. However, Plant started making a comeback in 1977, with his voice becoming a lot more clear and powerful than it was in 1975, and it only improved from there. You can tell that Plant sounds better in the second clip (1979) than he did in the first (1975). ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1iFwqXSQn20.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hW_WLxseq0o.html

Yeah, you can really tell he was struggling in that clip from '74 where he shares the stage with Paul Rodgers. PR sings first, Robert second and you can really hear that Robert was having some issues.

Julie Andrews (The Sound of Music) was a Upper World class soprano\Opera base that had nodules removed surgically and they botched the procedure ruining her voice permanently.. Imagine that heartache, being world renowned and envied by all to have it snatched away. Her vibrato was high ,smooth and clean.

The Honeydrippers project is what introduced me to him in 1985. I adored his singing on Sea of Love. Also his solo hit Big Log from early 80s. I highly recommend his sort of spooky blues world fusion type of current music - what he did with Allison Kraus. Check out his duet with her on Black Dog. Also his recent song Carry Fire is with such an awesome band. Highly recommend both of these. And one more thing is his performances with Jimmy Page in the 90s - catch Kashmir with an Egyptian orchestra. And another one of their performances had a killer hurdy gurdy solo :Jimmy Page & Robert Plant - Hurdy Gurdy Solo - Gallows Pole - 10.24.95 - Philadelphia PA - 06 . These are some of favorite things by him outside of official Led Zeppelin stuff. I adore his voice. My all time favorite vocalist is Raul Malo of the Mavericks. He is heavily influenced by Roy Orbison. You must catch some of his Mavericks and solo performances. If you want recommendations I am happy to send suggestions for Raul.

When I consider Robert Plant, I think about his lyrics, and the way he lays or floats them along on top of the instrumentals. Great Video, as always… Robert Plant is one of the originals. I want to ask you to do a video like this for Perry Farrell, Who sings very much and the same style. He is like Roberts bastard art school son. I have seen no vocal teacher or anyone online anywhere ever talk about Perry ( or Jane’s Addiction for that matter). And I think that’s kind of a gross oversight because they were truly the band that sparked the “alternative rock “ revolution in America… and while all the “grunge” singers take all the credit for soaring high vocals during the 90s… it was Perry Farrell who set that trend in the late 80s. The guy is brilliant and deserves some recognition.

A couple of corrections: apart from biographers who heard it straight from Robert's mouth, I keep hearing people asserting that "Robert aspired to be an accountant". In fact, Robert aspired to be a singer from the time he was first exposed to Elvis, Buddy Holly, and of course hearing the real blues roots music which got him really excited. He worked in an accountancy firm in an on the job training position for a couple of weeks because his father found the job for him and insisted he take it. He proceeded to goof off until they fired him. He then started college for a time, playing in a string of blues rock bands. He and his father were almost entirely estranged for a few years, and Robert would sleep in the vans of bands he was playing with sometimes. When he got together with Maureen, he started living with her family. Second, he COWROTE 6 songs on the debut album, usually writing lyrics to Jimmy Page's instrumental compositions, or along with him. Plant didn't start into writing songs completely on his own until after Led Zeppelin.

Hi Ken thanks for another amazing video. You seem to be going through all the singers of my favourite bands from axl rose now to Robert plant. Would you consider doing a video on Myles Kennedy? I know you’ve talked a bit about him in the past but I’d love to see a video dedicated to him and his technique. I’d also love to see one on David lee Roth. These guys are the people I’m basing my voice on so any videos or tips that I can get my hands on I love. Stay safe and happy Easter Ken!

If you're going to talk about Robert Plant, you need to go back to the beginning - How Many More Times. The best version of Kashmir is the Earls Court performance same concert as your Stairway to Heaven review. He had a record contract before Zep, you should look that up too.

Babe I'm Gonna Leave You, Since I've Been Loving You and Tea for One are some others that come to mind for me. Your point about John Bonham and John Paul Jones is something that hits home for me. I've been listening to a lot of Led Zeppelin over the last year and I hear John Bonham loud and clear. Just brilliant. It's the same for me with early Sabbath now. I hear Bill Ward loud and clear.

I read that Plant developed nodules and had vocal chord surgery in '73. There was a *noticeable* change in his sound especially after Physical Graffitti and on the Presence LP. Quite a few times his singing in concert was less than stellar lol. Everyone has "off nights" (I totally understand that---some nights a singer just isn't up to singing for 3+ hours) and RP definitely had a few of those lol. Despite that Zep had phenomenal stage presence and obviously epic albums..

Please please please do Jeff Lynne. I've been singing for a little bit now and Jeff Lynne has been one of my bigger vocal influences for a lot of reasons. The main ones being the fact that he sounded so smooth and relaxed back in the day, but I think he's only gotten smoother with age. On top of that, his voice is just generally amazing to listen to.
