That’s what I’m saying, a lot of people don’t like heavy music “because it’s just noise”, but if you actually take a second and break it down it’s so much more than “just noise”. It’s a beautiful masterpiece of four different instruments and an incredibly talented vocalist all just meshing together in this kind of musical brawl. It’s like you said. Even if you don’t like heavy music, you have to appreciate the production value and the skill and time it takes to make these songs.

Joey was a great drummer. A lot of "cooler than you" drummer forum types (who, i am 99% sure could not play 10% of the stuff he did) would slate him for being clichéd, without realising that he was pretty much the guy who popularised that style of drumming. Also, as Rick points out, his playing more depth than people give him credit for. RIP Joey, such a shame you didn't get to make more music.

Slipknot almost never causes a good 1st impression, because of how heavy, chaotic, sinister and weird their songs are, and, obviously, their visuals LMAO.. The mix of It all makes almost every single new listener think that they kinda workship the Devil or any other evil/bad thing.. when i first heard and saw them i felt that something bad was going to happen to me or to someone i love If i kept listening to that.. i immediatelly closed the vídeo i was watching.. It took me like, 20 seconds at max to close It. But maaan, If you surpass that initial impression, and PAY CLOSE ATTENTION, you'll probably notice that you just discovered a phenomenom of a band. It's not that commom people liking them on their first time listening to It.. a Lot of people, like myself, had to literally LEARN how to enjoy Slipknot... the velocity, weirdness and heavyness of their songs create a sonic chaos that a LOT of brains (even rockers) need to learn how to situate themselves when listening to It. Wanna know what made me forget about the bizarre 1st impression i had of them? Just start listening to Psychosocial (álbum/Videoclip version), and keep going until the 1st chorus hits.. i couldn't believe what i was listening.. the song was so fckng heavy and dark, and punchy, with literally the voice of the devil himself singing like If he was mad at me, then all of a sudden an AMAZING voice cut's though singing an ABSURDLY catchy Melody, mixing perfectly with everything Else, while the intensity never went down... I mean.. want to know How good Slipknot is? Look at ANY Rick's previous vids, from any time, and find a single vídeo showing Rick rocking/headbanging and going like "Woooohhooo" 20ish times like he did on this one. LMAO. Another thing.. they got famous playing heavy and weird stuff by choice, because they are not good only in that type of music.. If they wanted, they could EASILY get as famous as they got by creating songs that are more 'radio / comercial friendly songs.. and that How good and dynamic they are. Slipknot - Vermillion part 2 Slipknot - Snuff These 2 songs are SLOW, kinda acoustic style.. it's even hard to believe that you're listening to Slipknot when listening to these 2.. because it's so slow, and beautiful.

Slipknot is certainly one of the most unique metal bands ever, if not the most unique period. When I started listening to metal as a teenager, as soon as I heard Slipknot, it just felt different from any other metal band, and this was before I even knew they wore masks and stuff. What's great is that even if you only hear their music and know nothing else, you can tell this band is something else.

OK Rick, you have opened my mind to bands I would never have listened to unless you had done a "What Makes This Song Great?" about one of their songs. The record companies should PAY YOU instead of blocking you; you generate more sales for them than radio play ever will. Before watching this, the only thing I knew about SLIPKNOT was that they were a loud metal band that wore masks and jumpsuits while performing. Your analysis opened my eyes to the sophistication of their arrangements and their high production values. On the downside, with nine musicians all pounding away at once, it is difficult for those with less discerning listening skills to pick out all those nuances. (Especially on a car radio!) Yes, those drum fills are fantastic, but you have to listen like Elmer Fudd ("Listen vewy, vewy cafuwy!") to pick them out of that wall of sound. I didn't even KNOW a piano was being played until you pointed it out. Keep at it Rick!

@@Spermwhales93 I don't know dude, Rick pointed out that Duality was recorded off grid, plus Jim Root said in an interview recently that they did their latest album without a click, I'm just going by how the tempo is fluctuating a lot, I know you can program in a tempo map for that but this just seems much more organic sounding than that
@Spermwhales93
@Spermwhales93 3 года назад
@@RickerbyMusic Well the thing is, if you're recording people who are genuinely THAT tight (and the Slipknot guys are), even on a 'gridded' session you barely need to do anything to the actual performances. Yeah sure Jim might say they didn't record with a click and that may very well be true but that doesn't mean that the actual session in the DAW wasn't 'gridded'. Remember that producers do a lot of things behind the scenes without telling the band or just straight up lie to them to get the best possible performances, tones and sounds (the story about Butch Vig making Kurt Cobain do loads of takes claiming that it didn't record properly etc. to trick him into double-tracking his vocals comes to mind here).

Now that we've hit Joey...Jimmy from Avenged Sevenfold deserves his due, and there's no track that better showcases his unmatched talent than "A Little Piece of Heaven". This was an excellent examination, especially the piano bit, which most people miss (but adds SO much to the song). Absolutely fantastic video, as always.

Rick actually rarely talks about the really vulgar songs, and that ones subject matter practically borders on necrophilia. I dont think he's gonna touch that one. Would love if he did a song The Rev waa on though, considering the one a7x WMTSG was a song after The Rev died.

I LOVE Before I Forget. Its one of their thrashier songs and it absolutely slaps. Also it has a SH*T ton of sub bass in it, making it great for good sound systems with good quality woofers/subwoofers. Cant hear the sub bass on headphones, but you can DEFINITELY hear it on subwoofers, wonderful mixing/mastering there.

To this day Joey adding the double kicks in the last chorus is one of my favorite drum parts ever. It's so little but does so much. It pushes that chorus forward, build the tension all without changing the groove of the chorus. Such a genius part.

Someone that makes fun of the Christian religion is an inspiration to you. Why is it okay to ridicule Christianity and not any other religion.

@John Burris Because seeing Bible bangers like yourself get all butthurt over it is hilarious.

@@brandonjones8849 I'm sorry you see it that way. You act like I'm close-minded in a Bible banger this seems to me you're the one that's close-minded because you can have your opinion and I can't.

Not even remotely my wheelhouse, but Rick's enthusiasm and breakdown allows me to appreciate it. Im not a fan, but i have a much better appreciation for it, than i do before Rick showed the way.

For Rick to compare Joey's drum fills to those of the master Neil Peart, 18:00, was truly a compliment for the ages.

It’s hard to get more iconic than your most recent songs for this series, but I’d love to see one on Welcome to the Black Parade by My Chemical Romance. So much going on in that song!
