Then we can finally see what he really has to say about any authorship of IML. From what I remember he composed Here, There, Everywhere as a competitive piece to IML. That's one of the great secrets of the Beatles, their collaboration was more of a friendly competition which pushed and motivated them to approach similar type songs differently to see who could come up with the best version. In this case they were both trying their hands at Brian Wilson type introspective songs ala Pet sOunds.

Not to take anything from George Martin, I think John and Paul, by Rubber Soul, had the writing sophistication to find chord changes with melodies and harmonies that were pleasing to them without knowing musical theory or how to read or write music. They used to get kicks out of others analyzing their songs. Martin tried to talk them out of singing that last harmony “...yeah” in “She Loves You”. They stuck with it. Martin had brilliant arrangements (like Yesterday), I just don’t think he tampered with their writing.

Why couldn't Paul or John (who wrote most of this, btw) have thought of that chord change? Look at "Blackbird" with all its inversions and chromaticism. It seems much more complex to me than "In My Life." There's a video where Paul explains how it derived from a Bach piece. The Beatles learned so many tricks from other music, even if they didn't know what those tricks were called or why they worked. For example, they were using the Picardy third in the early '60s. I doubt Paul knows what it's called even now.

Agree 100%. I'm sure the writing process was much closer to playing around with chords for a long time until the Beatles heard the sounds in their heads. One thing I noticed as I learn more theory, it's harder to forget it and just listen without analyzing what you're writing with theory. I'm amazed what my friend who knows no theory comes up with. Or what I came up with before I learned. Or things I write without understanding even now. Our ears know more than we give them credit for. If it sounds right, it is right.

@frankmerendino1855 4 года назад
The melody and chord progression were not changed or in any way written by George Martin...although he often helped them work out vocal harmonies in studio. That was Lennon, with a little help from McCartney. George Martin composed the keyboard solo which he performed at half speed and then sped up to mix it into the track...his music box effect, as it came to be called. That's his main contribution to the song. While much would not have happened without him in the same way, Lennon and McCartney were songwriting geniuses.
@chuckdunlap470
@chuckdunlap470 4 года назад
I agree about George Martin being important in ways that are often overlooked, but I think that Paul had far more to do with their harmonies than anyone else involved - including Lennon and Martin. Not only was he a natural, but he in particular had a thing for the Every Brothers. During the time that In My Life came out, Macca was putting out multiple songs a day. And he was (at least then) nothing less than a genius. I'd guess that his piano playing (although some would argue technically not great) gave him the mental makeup for the unique chord structures he came up with. He almost always sang the high harmonies - even though John in his competitiveness said that he could sing higher - and made each of the others songs that much better for it. Listen to him harmonize with John on If I Fell - fantastic! - or the high parts on Ticket to Ride. Another song, one of my all-time favorites is George's Something. The song wouldn't be quite the same without Macca's harmonies. Love your channel Rick!

@@garysanning3208, yes Paul is a great musician. Even he has said that this piece was "above my competency"... but nonetheless, he played it as he heard and wrote it. I would also add that had he not been self-taught, he would have been less likely to explore interesting modes and progressions.

@justgivemethetruth

The thing I notice about Beatle's music is that the thing that attracts one to it is that it always plays with your ears. The sequence of the melody seems to switch off between voices leading to an unpredictable quality that teases your ears and makes it very fun to listen to and seemingly different every time you listen to it. The Beatles were as far as I can think were the first ones to really pack this into their music. There is a real difference between writing the lyrics, writing the music, and then producing the song that you point out in your videos. And this is seemingly such a simple song, but there is so much in it that it seduces the ears and is really pleasant to listen to ... not to mention the harpsichord solo.

4:26 OK, I have no idea what Rick had to be thinking here. Paul and the other Beatles used that I7 to IV cadence ALL THE TIME. When I'm 64 follows up the exact same way with I7 (C7) to IV (F) to iv (Fm). George Harrison uses it in Something - C7 to F. Paul uses it in Michelle - Ab7 to Db. It's in the bridge of From Me To You - C7 to F. It's in Hey Jude - F7 to Bb. It's in Hold Me Tight - F7 to Bb. It's even in their first #1 hit Please Please Me in the bridge - E7 to A.

I also see George Martin's fingerprints all over this song. Sure Lennon wrote the song and lyrics but in my view George Martin refined it as he often did being the producer and also musical mentor of The Beatles. If I remembered correctly from the 1990s released Anthology DVD series Martin did say he was involved in this song and not just because he played the harpsichord solo but also in making Lennon's abstract ideas into much more concrete musical form. Martin stated that Lennon was no doubt a musical genius but Lennon's genius was much more intuitively inclined along abstract lines which meant when Lennon communicated musical ideas to Martin Martin had to speculate to get a sense of what Lennon truly meant. Martin then with his much superior and more sophisticated musical knowledge and music theory then gets to make Lennon's abstract ideas into much more concrete musical terms. On the other hand Martin also stated that Paul McCartney was a also a musical genius and much more along the lines of Martin himself being more knowledgeable on the theory side of music than Lennon and hence being able to express his ideas to Martin along concrete musical terms in a way that Martin can much more easily understand. It's all in that Anthology DVD series.

I'd say Martin was the brains of The Beatles and the true 5th Beatle (instead of Brian Epstein). Without him The Beatles would have been much the poorer and much less influential as well less sophisticated in their musical outputs. Martin was so influential in creating that Beatle sound much more so than Brian Eno was responsible for U2's sound in the mid 80s to the early 90s.

Rick, I think John Lennon was the principal writer of the song and Paul McCartney might have helped with the bridge and some of the melody, but overall it was Lennon’s song. It always amazes me that he and McCartney wrote this while young men in their early 20’s. Such a beautiful, thoughtful song. And, to those who are anti-Beatles, shame on them. However, I think more young people are turning to this music. I have seen a lot of videos where hip-hop and R&B fans react to Beatles, Stones, Zeppelin, The Who, and they are loving it. Great music is great music and doesn’t have an expiration date. Excellent video, Rick!

I have to think that eventually in time it will be understand that these young men usually were talented but that they were the fronts for a whole production company or very talented and educated older people who all were part of an effort to seduce young people. No doubt Lennon McCartney and countless other musicians were great, but they must have had a production crew behind them at least at some points that were adding things and teaching them and developing their talent. How do 20 year olds come up with stuff like this ... I don't believe it.

That's when I found out WHY we really couldn't play the Beatles in/at High School band ('67 - "71). We just could not figure out what they were doing. What Rick is doing here IS what Whik (professor) did in that class. RICK fabulous job here!

As many have noted, this song was written by John Lennon. Apparently the tune came to him nearly "whole cloth" while riding a bus to his whole neighborhood. John always felt that the song came "through him", as it expressed a sentimentality that he rarely expressed. Martin may or may not have suggested some harmonies, but Lennon and McCartney both experimented a lot with harmony themselves. (They were known to become aware of a chord or a progression from something they heard or saw on television or the radio, and then write a song around that.) Martin recorded the "harpsichord" solo at a slower speed in the middle of the night to get the song finished. (I personally feel that the keyboard solo doesn't quite reflect the Beatles and it's a bit overblown for this song.) I find that many songwriters who haven't had formal harmony training tend to often drift into modality.
@stevegray2091
@stevegray2091 4 года назад
Martin's keyboard solo reflects Bach, because it reflects his training as a musician. I really think he came up with it because the band members were being slow in coming up with an idea for the instrumental and he wanted to get the song finished. You may disagree with me, but to my ear, it's a perfunctory keyboard performance.

I think John and Paul could have written that chord change. They often used innovative, rare, outstanding and weird chords and changes and scales and everything. This is partially because the Beatles knew no music theory and so they unknowingly created chord changes and sequences that were genius and mindblowing. Songs like Penny Lane, Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds, Michelle, Blackbird, Something, A Day In The Life, Strawberry Fields Forever etc feature such complex and chromatic chord changes that are just as complex or even more complex than In My Life. They were geniuses and I think that they would have come up with this chord sequence, unknowingly or not.
@althealligator1467

Not only did the Beatles know quite a lot of music theory, they just lacked a lot of the established academic vocabulary for it, but the chord progression in this song is far from weird, it's pretty standard, though it makes all the right interesting choices at the right moments. Literally every single song you listed is far, far weirder.

Thanks for the amazing video as usual, Rick. I'd really love to know your thoughts on the song "Ask Me Why". For such an early Beatles song (the b-side of "Please Please Me" in the UK), it strikes me as being strikingly sophisticated. There's an early recording of them playing it at the Star Club in 1962 and it's exactly as they recorded it later. It blows my mind that John Lennon wrote that when he was only 21, or even younger. I'd love to know where he got the idea to use those chords and harmonic ideas, because he had to hear them on someone's records.
@larrybrown1597

Great presentation. I'm a Berklee alum and harmony was my favorite course. Harmony 1,2,3,4 and modal Harmony. I enjoy the analysis and I agree, it had to be George Martin that jumped into the mix and said let's try a few things, to make this song a bit more sophisticated. The poetry of the lyrics was always there but the musical influence of George Martin was where the magic was found. I remember taking a chord scales for arranging course, and the Beatles were always being used as an example. Also the influence of Little Richard's vocals was everywhere especially with Paul.

this is way the Beatles are probably the most covered band of all time: their songs, on top of being famous and therefore recognizable by most people, have in many cases a beautiful progression and melody, that easily leads to beautiful re-harmonizations. Some Beatles covers are stunning, ie Bill Frisell has made a full concert covering John Lennon's songs from the Beatles, and the result is stellar (Rick, you could take any of the songs in the video to make a great analysis on how to re-arrange a song).

Great choice of song rick. The harmony is so rich on this tune. Deep. A perfect song. Sophisticated yet catchy and melodic. Genius. Lennon and McCartney publicly argued over who wrote the music. Paul said he wrote the tune, inspired by Smokey Robinson and Lennon wrote the words. The piano (harpsichord sounding due to double playback speed) was played by Martin and he wrote that melody as well.

I’ve written plenty of songs that use some of these devices, not knowing any theory at the time, and I’m not even 5% the songwriter of Lennon/McCartney. I feel confident they could’ve just done it on their own just by following the muse that spoke so brilliantly and uniquely to them

Yeah, I think it’s supposition to think that McCartney could not have come up with the chords for the song by himself as we simply don’t know. But knowing that McCartney was an old-school piano player with the old school songs, he continually wrote songs with crazy chord changes. Some of it might’ve been George Martin but generally we don’t know, and I don’t think it’s right to assume.
