For the last few years I've been using a Rode NTG-3 for outdoor dialogue and an Audix SCX1-HC for indoor dialogue and couldn't be happier. I do mainly corporate interviews. I have a Sennheiser G3 with Sanken Cos-11d lav setup and still struggle to get that to sound as good (what I can only describe as a lack of presence). I'll have to watch your other video on matching sound sources again and see if I can improve the sound coming out of that wireless setup.

This helped me figure out the polar pattern I want for my tabletop gaming show. I don't want any microphones on camera but since people lean over the table to move pieces around, their shirt ruffles lavs too much. Super cardioid looks like the way to go to have one mic on a handful of people and still pick up some dice rolls on occasion as well.

Great content as usual. I am working on upping my audio game, but it is expensive. I use an iPhone app to capture audio. It is called voice record pro. It allows mic selection, live monitoring, and +/- 15db gain control. I’m rocking the low end Rhode video micro and rhode smartLav +. Your videos have been very helpful in getting the most out of this cheap set up.

Thanks Alex - this is great as always - If you have some of these mics it would be great to hear a comparison.. Also, using a shotgun mic indoors apparently is not recommended - boom mics selection for indoor would have been good to hear about ( The Senny MKH40 for example although cheaper options would be appreciated). Finally, I heard that VoiceTech lav is so good, it was used on a major production as a boom mic! I'd though of using it that way as a back up, but never as a main mic - Keep up the great work man!

I work in corporate videography and just ordered a Sennheiser MKH 416 after all the beautifully crisp audio samples I had heard on RU-vid for indoor dialogue. I tested it when it arrived and, compared to my Sennheiser G3 lav set, it was absolutely terrible; picked up all the room noise and echo very badly. I hadn't done enough research obviously and I can now only assume that all those samples were recorded in sound treated rooms which is something I can't rely on when shooting at offices. I returned it and ordered an MKH50 instead. Hoping that the supercardioid pickup pattern will work a little better as an off-camera audio solution for indoor interviews! I will be purchasing another MKH 416 when needed for outdoor shoots, though. Seemed very sturdy and incredibly precise.

I think renting is good when you are doing paid jobs or you want to try out some equipment. I am not doing that many paid projects, but rather help other filmmakers with their projekts or do own stuff. And if i rented a mic for every time i needed it I would be over the price I paied for it. So I think every one should always think, how often will you use it and how long will it last. The thing is I bought the Cmit5u and it was freakin' expensive, but a mic like this you will probably use for every project you do and you always need a good mic. Not sure if you need to go that far, but I thoughtm, buy nice or buy twice. And if you want to rent something for about a month or two you can buy it for the same price. So i would only rent if I have a shortfilm that needs some special stuff that I don't need regulary (anamorpic lenses or specific lights ...) but I am sure that I need a good mic every time I shoot something. Not sure if this was helpful in any way. Nevermind

Hey Alex! thanks for the round up. We have a home studio - just starting up as a youtube channel and picked up Samson C02 - these are definitely on the cheap side but had good reviews. Only problem we get is placement of them. It is a Pencil Condenser Cardioid mic and placing it out of frame makes it pick up too much unwanted sound. any advice on editing it out or because of pick up pattern its either in frame or dont use? All latest videos have been done on boya lav mic.

Hey Alex thanks a lot for your very helpful videos, your channel is so underrated! I’m looking for a new directional on camera mic because if find my Rode VideoMicPro (old gen) kinda mellow and flat sounding. My primary mics are lavaliers but I like recording ambiance sounds and I need to be able to have clean and crisp backup ability on camera recording just in case (documentary life). The 416 speaks to me but I’m wondering... Thanks mate! Cheers!

great content, as always from you Alex; but I do have to comment on one thing: it doesn't matter much what mic do you put on top of your dslr; I've tried quite a few (with all or most of the ones presented here included) and I have to say the final sound quality just sucks; compared to camera internal mic these do improve the sound quality quite a lot, but the preamps on the camera (I'm using Nikon D500 and D7100) are super super super noisy compared to anything based on xlr connection (I've used the H6 as well as one of those sennheiser remotes and an interface to my Mac); each and every mic that I've recorded via the xlr sounded incredibly better than what I could record in-camera, even with those Rode dslr-oriented mics; also the tascam 10 D (? not sure if I remember the name well; it's that super small recorder for the lavs via 3.5mm jack) did a much much better work in recording the sound than either of my dslrs (and D500 is supposedly a rather top-shelf dslr). So yeah - it'd be interesting to see you actually recording sound to a dslr and share your experience / findings :-)

Nice lesson Alex. If I mount the Rode VideoMic NTG to a boom (or any of the other low end Rode mics mentioned at beginning of your vid), and use a 15-20 ft cable to my Canon m50 DSLR (3.5mm mic jack), would I need a balanced cable? (have seen discussions of balanced cables for XLR mics, but no discussions on long cables for direct-to-camera mics)

Might be good to have a video about the Nikon Z6 Filmmaker’s Kit (since it now shoots ProRes RAW and a lot of people are NOT thinking about audio!) in my case, shot a scene with four actors, four lavs into a Zoom H6 before I realized the Z6 clock is NOT good enough to generate an accurate Time Code. Bought the Zoom F4 and Tentacle but haven’t put together another shoot yet... I expect there is some delay writhing ProRes RAW to the Ninja V (over HDMI) but I am hopping it is consistent enuff to sync up!

Right now I'm thinking about getting the Deity D3 Pro location kit, which is a very similar mic to rodes videomic ntg. Vortex, I watch your radar detector videos. You always have great content. I have a Uniden R3 thanks to your reviews. A Sennheiser 416 is way over the top for indoors YT video. You want a 416 for Hollywood-grade filmmaking for exterior shots, not indoors. Just buy a lav mic and connect it direct to your Zoom. Make sure you buy a lav with the right connector type. Alex recommended various lavs in this video, from budget to high-end. That will improve your audio for reviews from inside a car, as well as giving you good audio from inside your home. There are many dozens of options. The higher end ones will sound better. For how to connect a lav direct to your zoom, see: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-44v8EGGW_HA.html

Thoughts on the Samson Q2U? I have it and love it more than my old SM58. You can also plug straight into computer with USB so no need for extra money on an interface. You may already have a video on this but once you record the audio for a film or tv show, what do YOU do with that audio? Does your audio have time code? Do you turn over the raw audio to the people who do the post production or do you do some of that yourself???
@axk
@axk 3 года назад
That’s actually a complicated question to answer! Going to be making some videos addressing some of the complexities since there are many. The basics: I always record audio with timecode, whether it’s sound effects for post, or location sound/production. Large productions have people dedicated to each aspect of the workflow, so if I’m doing production sound I turn sound rolls over to someone for ingest/assembly/sync with picture dailies. On the post side (which is where I spend the most time) I’m the one syncing everything against picture, and it’s generally a pretty complex workflow that a lot of people are involved in to get everything in perfect sync. Hope that’s helpful!
@znbh
@znbh 4 года назад
hey Alex! quick question: in which case(s) would you prefer to use a boom versus a lav, or vice versa?
@jamesaltonfilms
@jamesaltonfilms 4 года назад
Boom when you don’t want a mic to show (or hide your lav well) and consider the different pickup patterns (cardioid or omni versus directional/shotgun) of the two, as well as the frequency responses. Lavs over pronounce high frequencies intentionally so they’ll need work in post if you want bass-ier sounds. If you’re doing voiceovers or podcasts though, you’ll want the proximity effect with a large diaphragm cardioid or a model like the SM7B
@jolp2811
@jolp2811 4 года назад
It is true that the sm58 is not recommended for voiceover? Some people says that it helps rejecting unwanted sounds on untreatment spaces and others says that being a dynamic mic it doesn't have enough quality to record voice as a condenser mic could give. It kind of confuses me, maybe is just a taste issue... What's your opinion on that? Thank you so much for your videos, they're awesome for newbies like me.
