What my mother thinks: 2:27
Skip to the Viet Part: 8:00
First of all, never ever would I have thought I'd be back this soon, but yes, I was back in Vietnam the past month and filmed some great content for you guys that will be released in the weeks and months to come. Secondly, I will have a viewer meet, greet, and eat in Fullerton on the 19th. Details at FB.com/KyleLe.net
Please RSVP. Lastly, I'm going against my mother's wishes for now and will continue to make as many videos of Vietnamese people abroad as possible because of many reasons. First, this is my passion right now. Meeting and hearing people's stories of struggles and success gives me a lot of pride in being Vietnamese and how resilient we are. Secondly, I have a degree in history and I understand the importance of recording history. If we don't save or document history, it will be lost forever. The younger generations or the current ones unaware should at least know some history. They'll have a better understanding and respect for where they came from. Perhaps then, hearing experiences and stories from others will also motivate and inspire them. It certainly influenced me. And lastly, I hope to continue to fine tune and learn from this short documentary production art. It's a form of expression that I've been doing for years and always want to improve and make better videos. Certain opportunities have arisen from the past, and hopefully more might happen in the future. The only way I'll know is if I keep creating content that I am passionate about
However, I can't do this alone. I need your help in finding stories and sharing experiences. I'm a one person operation without a team or crew or partner. I am on my own, but I'm not truly alone. Your support in the past and recently has been highly noted and appreciated. It also motivated me to continue. If anyone can offer help in any way or stories, feel free to write me on www. Kyle...
As much as I would love to meet all of you, please give me specifics and not just a come to (insert city here). I'm looking for specific stories of Vietnamese people or any people. It doesn't have to just be Vietnamese. It just has to be the right story and the right timing. Again, thank you for joining me on this journey. And mom, I'm sorry, just give me some more time.

I was in a similar situation 10 years ago, I eventually just didnt care what they thought and did what I wanted to do. Best years ever !! No regrets. When you are young, you dont need to prove yourself to your parents yet.. you will have plenty of time to do it later. Now I have a family of my own, I am glad I did what I wanted to do so I am not living with the question "WHAT IF...."

Kyle, I think if you ended up living and working in Vietnam you'd have no problems making money and living a halfway decent life. I've got friends in Japan here who are cutting business deals left and right in Vietnam because there is just so much development and investment going on and there is big demand for Japanese business and products. Likewise there is big demand for Vietnamese imports and workers in Japan. Hell, I am thinking about doing it myself! Just being a liaison or consultant for people looking to invest in Vietnam would be highly lucrative IMO, because you can speak the language. Vietnam is like America in the early 1900's or Taiwan 30 years ago. Its a rapidly developing nation with many resources that has synergies and good relations with countries like the U.S. and Japan, thats changing very quickly and with tons of potential for making money. Of course, I believe you should respect your parent's wishes and at least hear them out. But you also need to live your own life and pursue what gives your life meaning. Millions of people commit suicide or have feelings of suicide because they feel like they have nothing to live for -- their life has no meaning. If you have found something to live for, that is a gift! You should pursue it. If you're unhappy living in SoCal just doing some daily grind, whats the point? Do you think you're going to find love and happiness in an environment thats bumming you out just for your folks? Hell no! People always have it backwards. They think that happiness just falls into their lap one day and they live happily ever after. No, its in the process of pursuing what makes them happy that everything else (like love and success) starts to fall into place.

Hey Kyle, I dont know if you will read my comment, but let me tell you man, your mom isn't wrong BUT you gotta do what you gotta do. I can feel your story, your passion cuz I am right now as typing these lines, pursuing a similar path (not as a film or documentary maker, but RU-vid in general). I found out about you from the 'Vietnamese guy in Africa' video, and instantly I knew that your channel can grow into something much more than it is right now. Of course your videos is not as fancy as those on big TV channels, but they're so likable, enjoyable and so related to me, as a Vietnamese. And I know viet sub is hard and will take you crap load of time. But I think with vietsub in your video, it will take your channel to a whole new level in subscribers and views. Think about it man, 90 Millions, this is the place to share and spread your great content videos.

I am totally get your mom's concern as a parent myself. But you need to do what you desire to do, however you should know your limit. Don't keep doing something you don't think it will get you to your goal. Good luck to you buddy!

+Cường Marine - 123minou well I'm fully aware of the smaller Channel and not so many views aspect but I just have to try a little bit longer at least make the content that I can be proud of and want to continue when I do have time. But I'm aware of that this hasn't gone the way that I wanted it to but it's okay, it's another part of the journey

Kyle, I enjoy your videos and you taught me a lot not only about Vietnam but the world. You have traveled to places one can only dream of, and some of us will never get the opportunity to travel to many of these countries. I'm glad you were able to live your dream and share it with us your viewers/fans. You shared stories of other Vietnamese of their unique stories and their lives and made me put myself in their shoes. You made me hungry at 1am from watching your amazing street food videos. I wish we can prolong your travels forever, but there comes a time when it has to end(bitter sweet). You're getting old. You're not a 21 y/o fresh college grad out of Cal State LB no more. It's time to think about your future and get a career and make that paper, save for your 401k, and find a girl. I know you don't want to hear this from a stranger and can careless of what I have to say, but you went to college for a reason. Your parents were vying for a better life in America so you can have opportunities. I never met you in person, but you replied to my snap chat comments a few months back. I said you were lucky to travel the world. You promptly replied back and told me it's not what I think. It's a lot of work with very little reward in return. Countless hours and days filming and editing with little sleep and barely able to survive off your youtube salary. I know you do this for us, your viewers, but maybe it's time to think about "YOU" put in some thought to your future.

Dear Kyle Le. I'm a 41 year old English Vietnamese refugee. I left Vietnam when I was 2 and a half years old. I have no memory of living in Vietnam or of having lived at the refugee camp in Malaysia. My grasp of the Vietnamese language is extremely poor despite my father's attempts to set up a Vietnamese Saturday language class. I haven't taught my three half English children the Vietnamese language, because I'm constantly told by mother that my accent is appalling. The Vietnamese community correct my Vietnamese as well. My mother has banned me from returning to Vietnam. My siblings and parents have been to visit . I love your vloggs and I understand that a life of "what if's ? . Are tantamount to a life of regrets . To take that step into the uncertain, is to be brave . No safety net . Through your vloggs I'm able to see Vietnam. As a parent I am pro choice. I've lived my life , made my decisions and mistakes . I can't give my children millions but I can give them the freedom from my own insecurities about their welfare to make their own choices , because I respect and appreciate the hardships they have grown up with them selves such as racism. Kyle Le . You've already made your parents proud with a degree. The voices you broadcast and the beautiful cityscapes you show are brilliant. Thank you kyle. Thank you.

I assume that not many vietnamese watch kyle's video just because of most vietnamese r not interested in english video, and as he mentioned in the video he's not good at writing in vietnamese so he pobably can't write books or blog (mình nói tiếng anh vì đây là video cho đa số người nói tiếng anh xem chứ không phải muốn khoe khoang hay gì đâu)

Kyle, I am in the same boat as you. I'm 29 years old and I don't make alot of money, but I am currently doing what I LOVE. My mom and family says the same thing to me, that I need to "do" something with a more stable source of income to have a better life. And i DO agree with them.... but personally, just because things are not falling into places "now", does not mean it will be. At least we are making something and truly enjoy what we are doing. It's not like we are both being lazy and just hangin out. We are actually doing something and hustling -- and that is the key point. We are still young! Some people don't find their "thing" until their 40 and then instantly become very successful. Look at the housewife Bethenny Frankel. She wasn't rich until just a few years ago. She hustled and hustled until things fell into places. We're in the same boat.

I started watching your video about one and a half years ago. As a Vietnamese, I truly admire you of the way you spread out the image of Vietnam to the world. Additionally, you have travelled everywhere to meet Vietnamese people living and working abroad and I really love the way you tried Pho and much other Vietnamese traditional food. I suppose that many people find it hard to figure out what their real passion is, and I am also having these feelings and thoughts like the way you are having right now. It is really difficult for us not living with our passion because life is hard. But in the case you want to give up, I just want to suggest that you should remember what made you start doing this in the first place! I will definitely support you regardless of your choice!

Man, I'm late to this particular video but this struck a nerve. My parents also had a problem with my decision to move back there back in 2002, even though they already knew my plan was to be there for only 3 years, and my mother was just worried about my health and safety whereas my father had a problem as a matter of political principle. At the end of the day, I stayed in VN for 10 yrs and we all were OK with it after they saw how much I enjoyed it (it also helped that I got married and had 2 great kids). With regards to you Kyle, you have to follow your love, especially when it's doing so much good. I have moved back to the States for 4 years now and I still miss VN everyday, no lie. Knowing how kind you are, you will not be able to travel once you start a family. You'll want the best for your family/children and my guess is that you will give up a major part of yourself to look after your family. So pursue your dream now and your dream is a great one, of helping so many people.

I am 23 and a Vietnamese American and I have been watching you since the start and honestly your are such a big inspiration. You live such a passionate life and I wholeheartedly support your decision. It takes balls to follow your heart and dreams with knowing the entire downside of it all. I feel pressured from my mother about my future and its always the basic stability talk. I find that boring and too common. I think a thing that Vietnamese parents tend to forget is that their struggles in this country for their children are for their dreams but as life goes on its all about having stability. To me I would love to do what you do. The most true thing you have done for me is inspire and improve over the years i have been watching you and I cannot find any other content on RU-vid that captures travel, food, and relations as a Vietnamese American. Plus everyone can find that stability at any point in life but barely anyone on this planet can say they traveled and experienced different cultures as you have. I want you to keep this going forever but reality will take its toll. I wish you the best and know you have made a impact on at least one more person.

Hi Kyle, who is this Tony Low. Who pays him to be so negative. Your videos are great and I enjoy watching them as do thousands of others. What's important is you follow your desire and dreams. You just have to find a way to monetise them. When you make videos you need an advertiser/sponsor. This is where you are going wrong. You need to approach a company and say I'm going to put your product/business in front of 90k people for this much $$$. Are you interested? You could be an affiliate for Vietnam airlines. So each video you provide an affiliate link to book. Or hotels etc... You could create a course on how to edit video and then sell it. How many of your subscribers would purchase that? What if you charged $49/course. What if 5% of your fans bought? That's 4500 people. Don't doubt yourself. People will buy. 4500 sold at $49 would be $220,500. What if 2.5% only buy still $110k isn't bad! That would all be within a month! Not bad making $100k in one month! I used to live in VN until 2008 and when I left, your videos helped me live in VN while living abroad. Thanks for your time you put in these vids.

You're such an inspirational person , i learnt a lot from you . There is some days that i hate you for being so arrogant , but then when i saw your series about Vietnamese diaspora around the world , i see your hardwork , your passion i really admire you. Keep doing what you're doing , i know your mom would be proud.

My mom had always wanted me to become a teacher, but I had always dreamed of becoming an engineer. I studied and finished all the course requirements and earned my education degree. On my graduation day, I gave my mom the degree certification, and told her that I was going to another school for my engineering degree. So surprised, she asked me if I was happy with my decision. Smiling at her, I nodded my head. "If it makes you happy, it makes me happy," said my mom.

totally a Vietnamese mom response. of course they want what is best for us. they want us to secure for our future...but at the same time, if this is your passion, if this is something you have to do, do it, you are still young, go explore and meet people and share their stories, the life experience you are getting from this is priceless.. through experiences and networking, job and money will come and go (at least in my experience it is)...but you have this opportunity to continue doing this so i say go for it!

Your Vietnamese has improved tremendously! I get what your mother is going through because mine is the same way. It comes from a place of love. Your passion also comes from a place of love. At the end of the day, you just need to balance both. Easier said then done. Good luck, Kyle.

Kyle your videos are very interesting and even though I don't watch all of them to completion, I still make it a point to watch some of it each time a new video is uploaded. Your videos are the reason I wanted to check out the different places in Vietnam rather than just going to hcmc all the time. What you're doing now is something all of us would like to do but don't have the talent or courage to do it. Don't worry about the money now because, honestly you're still young and you'll have plenty of time to make money later. Just keep doing what you love and the rest will take care of itself. 👍👍👍

Therefore, just prove to your mom that you can follow your dream and still have a bright future so she will lessen her worry . Good luck to you dear and keep up your good works

You have to make the decision between A) pursuing your passion and possibly struggling financially for a long time or B) doing something you're not passionate about just to sustain a comfortable lifestyle. Most people choose B in life. Some people are lucky enough to follow their passion and end up making a good living or even get rich. You have to face the reality that what you are doing may not pan out. But sometimes you also have to be crazy enough to follow your dreams despite the high probability of failure. It takes a lot of courage to follow your passion.

Take your moms advise, use any good points but finally think for yourself. Your mom has her own view of things, however at the end of the day, it's your life. Do what makes you happy. If every one lived in one place their whole life and did a 9 to 5 job for a monthly pay packet, this world would be super boring and not the same world we know now right ?

I completed understand your Mom concert and would like to said this. Vietnam is a great country currently happen to be one of fastest growing economies in southeast Asia. There are many many many opportunities there in VN to make a good decent living. but for a Viet-kieu not so much. Not so much the time being. I'm sorry to said but sadly it's true. It's time to settle down and think about yourself / your career / your future. What ever your decision is for the coming days in Vietnam or elsewhere. I do wishing you the very best.

Kyle ... first of all, ure Vietnamese is lit!!!! I wish I could express myself the way you can towards your mom! It would make my life much easier! I might improve my by watching your videos over and over again , haha! what i wanna say to you is , I can identify myself with you so so much. Lets share something bout me, Im a Vietnamese girl and was born in Germany , after my B.Sc. I did a pause for 2 years doing the things I wanted to do because I was sick of doing more studies. I felt like just doing it to fulfill my moms heart but in reality I rlly didn't know what to do, even after my two years break I wasnt unsure ! Now I am 26 and I am doing my second bachelor and now seeing my parents growing older older so fast I pressure myself to be done fast, but that's not the way it goes with engineering. It has been more than one year, no day has passed without me thinking about my future and how I can be Truely happy and make enough money for the whole family one day! I am still unsure bout ma career even though I like seeing myself in a specific branch. The thinG is I am also really creative minded driven and I have to be engaged in some social work to be truely happy and I swear to myself to find a way to do it all, but one step at a time to not lose track! ... well I can relate so much to you at this point , especially cuz Ure the only child and one of your biggest wishes is to see mommy and daddy being proud of you. But then you really have to do what they imagine you should do! People who do exactly what ur mom says might be financially stable And that is what we all want but I bet not the majority of them are truely happy with their job even if it's good money. Success should not be measured by how much money we make, that is what society tells us. We have to loose our mindset when it comes to that , not that easy i know ! I want to encourage you to stick with your heart ! I find you so passionate with your work and that's so good to see that you got yourself something you being good at. Know do the hustle and there will be a day where u can travel and got more than just 1000+ something. I think by doing this you are enriched by so many things and learn you things , you are actually living a dream your mom is not aware of! She only wants the best for u, to slowly settle down and finding a woman , having a family that kind of stuff , but I also think she wants u to be around her. I am in a relationship with an African boy, when your mom hang up when she heard you visited Africa , you know I had to write this comment. My mom is so anti my relationship , even though she see that I love him, she doesn't want it , it influences me and i am doubtful about the future because she made me feel that it's not right , but what can U do when love is stronger ? sad to say but you won't see how much of a racist Vietnamese mothers will be unless this happens. See the point is we won't always be able to make our moms happy, they have to accept the way we want to create our own life. You still love them and you still have a reason you put in the work, just focus , Im pretty sure u will be successful , cause on u tube there is no one around like u! I rlly want u to be truthful with yourself , if u stick with what ur heart tells u do to u might be an inspiration for a lot of people one day! Because u have a hard time now , I will support u by liking each of ur videos from now on! Another inspiration is Michelle phan! She made it so why shouldn't we , so why shouldn't u? 😊 hope I could make u smile !!! Thanks for sharing your worries with us !

You dropped knowledge on shorty at the end lol. Sometimes we don't do what what parents say...they just want the best for us. But sometimes you got to be you. I'm a creative mind as well and have steered from the traditional path in my mothers eyes. That said I turned out fine. Keep obtaining your life experiences and eventually the only person that will know when you need to chill in one spot will be you. Thanksi for the videos as always.

Kyle, congratulations on a wonderful channel. I find myself combing through the older videos for content everyday. I had the same thought, about my passion, 20 years ago and decided that I couldn't do what my parents really wanted me to do. Of course, my parents only wanted me to have a stable and successful life. Now, I gotta say, that I've been very successful and happy doing what I love. A combination of luck, perseverance and hardwork made it okay for me to live a good life, with a great wife and kids. It may take you a bit longer, or not, but never forget that, if you must do what you're happy with, you have to be the best at it, always improve your craft, and success might just be in your reach!
