I had absolutely no spark on my strimmer and thinking it might be the coil, I removed the flywheel to check. Very surprised to find a set of points and a condenser! Parts for my machine are very difficult to find, as its 35 years old, but I managed to get some second hand parts from a supplier in France.
It's a Kioritz SRM200.

My grandpa bought one of these in the late 70's and gave it to me about 10 years ago. His was nothing but trouble from day 1. I put new rings in it after he gave it to me and used it for the summer. Ran it out of gas for the winter and it never ran again no matter what I did to it. It had wicked strong spark, good compression. Wouldn't even fire on starting ether, new plug or old. I'm surprised how many of these I see on RU-vid nowdays.

yes I'm surprised as well as they're all about 40 years old. I presume you also cleaned out your carb and changed the diaphragm? All thats left is the correct timing on these machines. Took me a long time to work out how to set mine.

@@davekennedy52 Yep, carb was rebuilt, that thing was nothing but trouble but finally got it working. Ran great when I drained the tank and ran it out of gas. Crank seals must have went or something. Points were clean and adjusted correctly. The sprak was so strong it made me feel sick for a day when I got shocked by it.

@@MattsRageFitGarage Sorry, but I had to laugh when I read about your strong spark. I got zapped when adjusting my distributer on my car, so I know the feeling. My Kioritz struggles a bit to start, I think its sucking in air past the carb/manifold gasket. but once its going its perfect. Prefer it to my other strimmers

@@MattsRageFitGarage sounds like user error to me, I've owned a few of the Echos and other brand varients and they have all been very reliable and rather peppy machines. Many others will agree with me on that, while you seem to be the minority. I am not denying you or your grandfather of said mehanical ability, but none of that matches my years of experience with the early kioritz power plants. Cheers bud🍻

just started fixing one of these today also having a no spark issue, this video is very helpful, at least now i know what to expect once i pull it down a bit more.

took me by surprise when I opened up the back, its really one of my most interesting projects. It turned out that my no spark issue was due to worn out points and of course I then had a timing issue and I eventually found the timing marks on the outside of the flywheel. Good luck with yours

Sorry but I did the coil test incorrectly. Retesting there is no continuity between spark plug terminal and coil. Your guidance please.
@davekennedy52
@davekennedy52 4 года назад
Hi stewart, if your multimeter registers "1" or infinity then your coil is shot. Just make sure that the spark plug wire itself is making contact with the coiled spring inside the spark plug boot. Mine had come loose! I've given you the part number of the coil on your previous message. You could also have a look at my video on replacing a spark plug boot. If you need more info just let me know

Hi Dave, good video. I have an old Echo chainsaw CS302S, about 40 years old I believe, overall good shape, but it will not start, no spark at all, I believe the problem is the ignition coil # 15012603930 but this part is now obsolete and I cannot find a replacement for it. Could you please share your contact info from your supplier in France. He may be able to help me. Thank you. henri

Love these old machines, but yes, parts are hard to come by. I bought a set of points from someone in the US. After watching your guitar video, I thought you were from the US. I live in France. I know the postage is crazy but there are other makes that have the same motor, like Weedeater, Echo, Sears...check in the comments below. I think that the Echo might have an electronic upgrade. Good luck!

The problem is that these Chinese made strimmers are so damn cheap, people buy them and keep them for a few seasons and then dump them. so your Kioritz is made in Japan and is very reliable but will probably only be sold to an enthusiast. Congrats on your kid

Dear davekennedy52, I have the same motor, but it has the name on it 22cc sears craftsman. Will not start. When I check for spark (plug removed) I get spark. .When test with a spark tester (replicates test under compression) I get no spark. Testing coil as you had shown I get 002. Question: Where can I get the replacement ignition parts? Also is it possible to convert to electronic ignition without points and condenser. Any guidance would be appreciated!! Thank you. All the best bruce the swimmer New Rochelle N.Y.

Hi Stewart, most people have never heard about this fantastic little motor, so I'm happy to find someone who actually has one! The spec for the coil is between 5 and 6 k ohms. My test showed 4,83 so I thought I had a coil problem. Managed to find a second hand one on a French website called LebonCoin. That gave a reading of 4,80 k ohms and the guy told me that it was from a working machine. my machine is a Kioritz but was also made by Echo. Echo is the factory in the USA. After a lot of blood, sweat and tears I finally found a set of points on ebay and when I put those in, I could at last get a spark. My coil part number is 156 1260 4630 and the set of points is 156 1010 4630. I had to reset the timing on the machine and the timing marks are on the side of the flywheel.

@@davekennedy52 I've recently aquired an srm200da, along with a "Mini Weedy" made by Weedeater, uses a nearly identical engine (keh2020) by kioritz. Great running machines once I went thru them, couldn't resist grabbing them up knowing they had points/condenser being they're age, paid a whopping 30$ for the pair at local yard sale. 🍻

@@davekennedy52 yeah I've worked on many of the Early Echos and other brands of the era,so I knew as soon as I saw them. Nearly anything made before let's say 78-80 Is going to run points/condenser from lawnmowers to chainsaws, aswell as Weedeaters/strimmers.

I also have one of these, tough engine I have a saw blade on mine for cutting brush and it always handled it better than my others. It's a "weed eater model 609" I just took mine apart today for no spark and saw the coil, condensor, and points and was very confused. At least I know I'm not insane now, just wish it was easier to find ignition parts because I know that's all that is wrong with it. Hunt begins online I suppose.

Love these engines! Yours sounded great (watched the video). Do you have the specs for the machine? Although my coil reading was less than spec it still works. i have a video on my channel showing how to check a condenser. The points were my problem. Once I put the new ones in, it took a month before I figured out how to reset the ignition timing. There are timing marks on the outside of the flywheel casing. You might also have them. Good luck!

@@davekennedy52 Honestly I don't know much about it, I have an older video on my channel of when I got it running at my dads house when he found it under the porch, had been there for 20 years behind his furnace fuel tank. No idea where it came from. Spun the nut on the back side with a drill for a minute and hit the carb with starting fluid and it fired. The carb was trash and I put an ebay carb on it, and the shaft sheared the gear off at the head so I had to put the SRM200 shaft on it from another trimmer I had with a busted engine and I used it a ton before the whole no spark, I think it was just a rebranded srm200 the "weed eater" company stole basically. They just flipped the engine upside down. I'm going to test the coil tonight and see if it's junk, I did find new old stock parts on ebay I ordered so I should be able to get it to run either way though I've always had trouble getting the carb just right. It always borders on too rich and blows fuel back out the carb instead of revving up unless I adjust the idle high. Still usable though.

@@davekennedy52 So my coil tests 5.07 ohms resistance, seems good there. I got new points in the mail today, in way better shape since they were in a sealed bag than what I've got, however my condenser doesn't ohm out at all. I have a box full of them but none that are the right size, but was able to make sure I'm doing the test properly and get the ohms increasing from 5-20 before maxing out on other ones. I get a new one of those in the mail tomorrow so I should be able to button things back up and at least get as far as getting spark again. I honestly don't think my model has timing marks on the other side of the crank so I'm hoping I can just re-assemble things. I haven't spun the crank since disassembling it, marked where everything was with sharpie.

I got it to cough one time in 20 minutes of pulling. Plug was wet, carb seems ok, tried starting fluid, tried torching the plug and a new plug.. just doesn't run. Not even sure what else to do, might be junk.
