I hate all the questions I get about my health. Nobody ever questions anything about your health before going vegan, after you go vegan is constant protein and b12 questions.

Yeah like suddenly everyone has a PhD in nutrition and they all know at least one vegan who almost died. ;-)

a.k.a. Jenny ugh yeah I relate so much, my grandma has brought up the story about that vegan baby from Italy who died a few years back more times than I can count. She does that every time we have a family dinner and sort of passively aggressively attacks my parents about why they would allow me to keep doing this (even though I explained to her many times that a plant-based diet is actually very healthy)
@jennyr1625
@jennyr1625 6 лет назад
I think clear mist is saying that meat eaters _view_ vegans as a cult and therefore they'll say anything to get us out of it. Or possibly that meat eaters themselves tend to act a bit cultish when it comes to defending their "right" to eating animals and if you disagree with them they act as if you've broken a sacred oath and betrayed the entire clan. The latter has certainly been my experience, at least among people who don't know me very well.

This!! 100% lol. I just want to throw the question back at them and ask them how they know they are getting all of their nutrients? But im nice and just turn it into a conversation about the cronometer app and how great it is 😂

Going vegan was easy... Until other people found out and started questioning every step I make. And there are a lot of annoying questions, like "why are you talking about veganism on RU-vid?", "why do you have only vegan recipes?", "you're not gonna eat anything from the holiday feast that we prepared? Not even an egg?" and so on. But I found out that after the initial rage stage as a vegan, I really do find more compassion for people too. Great talk, as usual!
@MsMouraMoura
@MsMouraMoura 6 лет назад
Madalina Zbranca That happened to me too and I’m a vegetarian. I guess the best advice is to try to build bridges if people are willing to talk to you calmly.
@MadalinaZbranca
@MadalinaZbranca 6 лет назад
I talk with the people who are willing to listen my side too. But a lot of the people transform into nutritionists and doctors as soon as they hear that you're vegan or vegetarian and all they want is to argue and make fun. At least at first. Some are willing to stay and discuss calmly, some remain in the making fun/ arguing stage
@MsMouraMoura
@MsMouraMoura 6 лет назад
Madalina Zbranca That’s very accurate and they tend to stand their ground even if you tell them that a well planned vegetarian and vegan diets are very healthy. It might boil down to habits and beliefs. I talked to two nutritionists when I became a vegetarian and the best of the two was the one working at my gym. She gave me a list of a lot of good foods to eat like quinoa, lentils and seeds. Which the one at the hospital didn’t. The transformation into nutritionists thing happened to me with a friend of my dad’s. I go to veggie restaurants with my sister and my mother but mom is not a big fan of soy, tofu and seitan. Dad is resistant but he seems fine with it now even though he doesn’t really agree with the whole thing.

The "rage stage" hahaha... Yeah I wen't vegan out of ethics when I was a teen... Way before veganism was even a thing. Before there was an internet community to get support from. Damn I was so full of angst at the time. My rage stage lasted years. I'm so glad of how much things have changed. I'm loving it. I'm loving how many cruelty-free options there are out there, how much easier it is to find vegans to connect with. So those who are still in the rage stage; I KNOW it is still very frustrating but veganism is doing better than it ever was before. Every day, more people change their habits, stand up for doing the right thing for the environnement, animals, health, hunger... Just keep up the good work, inspire others, we are getting there.

I was surprised when my mother told me to “just give it up already” at a restaurant in response to me asking the server if there was honey in the wheat bread. The idea that a parent could shame me like that in public really hurt. I actually considered giving up veganism for a moment, but then I considered what her “veganism” is. She’s staunchly Christian and feels ok talking to random people about it and I do not subscribe to organized religion. I was able to bridge the gap in that moment by asking her how it would feel if I asked her to just give up her religion already because it makes me uncomfortable. She seemed to understand and I hope she did, but it’s definitely something we’ll keep working on.

I'm sorry you have to endure that from a family member 😔. If anything gets hostile again, you can calmly reference the beginning of the book of Daniel in the Old Testament where he challenged his king's diet by having half the servants eat the royal food and half the servants eating fruits and vegetables. Guess which ones were healthier 😉

At least you're able to understand that veganism is a cult and that you think the same way. Your first food was animal-based (mother's milk) and humans need animal products to grow. Vegetables and fruits didn't even exist in prehistoric times.

What I didn't realize about going vegan is that I'd start to look at the world differently, as you all note, and that it would affect my relationships and how I perceive other people. It does make Thanksgiving difficult to a degree that I didn't anticipate - I went "vegan" (plant based) for health reasons initially, so I wasn't too concerned with the corpse on the table to start with. I even drew the duty of cooking the Christmas ham at one point ... which I definitely would NOT do now! :)

I think the hardest part for me was when I first went vegan and my family wanted to fight every single point I ever brought up. What surprised me the most after I went vegan that it actually made some people mad...like I was personally offending them for what I was eating or wasn't! It blew me away. Suddenly, I am the plant killer! I had a hair-stylist that we've gone to for years actually brag about how may animals she's killed. :o I also hate it when people ask where I get my protein from! They never cared when I went through the drive-thru what I was eating! Really people!!! This could be magnified in my area..I know like 3 vegans in my area, big area for farming and hunting!

I can't remember who said this but in response to the I want to go vegan but.... they said the best response is ok, go vegan except for X. Essentially saying, take the steps to eliminate everything that you don't mind giving up except the thing they find hardest to give up. By making these little steps, I think they would eventually be able to give it up entirely. Thought it was such a great way to respond to that question.

Awesome video, ladies! Can you guys do an episode discussing animal exploitation for the purpose of entertainment and service (such as zoos, aquariums, service animals, riding elephants/horses, animal use for film production, etc.) This topic is always so hard to talk to non-vegans about because they don't understand why vegans not only don't eat animals, but also don't exploit or support the exploitation of animals for our own benefit.

I also never thought that going vegan would change my relationship with other people so much. It's hard to understand that such nice people can support such cruel industries. I can't even understand myself before I was vegan because I knew what was going on in the dairy and egg industry for more than ten years before going vegan but I just didn't think it was that important or I don't really understand my kind of thinking I was blinded or didn't care. And now I think "how could I have been so heartless" it's really strange. I don't know any vegans in real life so I feel quite isolated sometimes. I want to be more understanding and compassionate with other people as well. But despite all of this going vegan was the best thing that happened to me and I'll never ever go back
@clearmist7170

Veganism being the worst industry. Can you imagine having large farms where insects and animals aren't allowed, just so people can grow oversized vegetables and unnatural fruits? No crop farming should exist at all. No more soy and beans and corn. Is that what you're saying?

When I went vegan amazingly so many of my friends started trying vegan restaurants, and started incorporating more vegan meals in their diet, 2 of them fully going vegan. On RU-vid I try to show people how delicious it can be and for the people closest to me a lot of them have been inspired by it. There’s only a few people in my life who don’t get it, and they’re really only mad that I won’t go to non vegan restaurants with them. Lol p.s the check out girl at whole foods did that with me too, I was like, you work at whole foods you have so many options! 😂💖

Well done. Like the others, the response to my personal choice to be Vegan has caused the most unexpected negativity. It’s been 5 years now and it doesn’t bother me as much. I guess I’m used to it. Now when people ask me WHY, I respond with “if you’re really interested in my story, I’d love to share it with you after you watch the documentary “Forks Over Knives” . Some people do but most people don’t. I have stopped giving information to those who really don’t care enough about it to watch the video. It’s just a waste of time and energy.

I love this discussion topic. I love your channel. I was vegetarian for 3 years before going vegan last year and one thing I never expected was how isolated I feel ( I live in North Georgia and there are not any if very few begins in my area.) especially at work when people bring in food or we have a company functions I can't partake because there's no options for me But when I was vegetarian there were options. And I just found out really interesting how just going from vegetarian to vegan really change people's perspective of you it definitely was not expected at all.

I never expected veganism to be as extensive as it was. There is so much to learn, so much philosophy, so many different ways that views differ even among vegans whom use the same vegan society definition. I never expected that veganism has so many different impacts, and realizing just how many endless different ways that animal agriculture is engrained into our culture. I never expected the variety of foods that I eat would widen, but they did.

I totally agree with everything you guys are talking about! Dani, practically everything you said is exactly how I feel. Its much more difficult in a very different way than I expected going vegan. I figured it would be "my thing" and that would be it but I feel like I look at everyone and their decisions differently. I just need to keep reminding myself that not only was that me at one time, but that part of being vegan is literally compassion for all. I didn't expect that living with a nonvegan who is also my partner could prove to be so difficult. It's challenging in the way we cook, shop for groceries and eat out either where we live or traveling. I guess we both kind of view our way of eating as the 'right way' and it can cause friction when the arguments can get heated over whether or not meat can stay in the fridge, what to feed our dog and wanting to go to a place just to try the local vegan food even if the place is 45 minutes out the way. I didn't expect that I would get so excited over finding something rare and delicious like a vegan croissant, but also that I don't have anyone (well, except instagram) to share that excitement. To my partner, it's just something you eat and nothing more, but to me it can truly make my day...

the reason for the confessing, the moodshift after seeing someone's vegan, etc is because a lot of us (non vegans) have interacted with vegans who judge the absolute shit out of you for not being vegan and honestly it can get really tiring to feel like you're being attacked for eating meat. that's why I'm so glad I came across you all because you speak about veganism with eloquence and positivity, and that above all else is what will create a real change in the way people think about food :)

There were several times where I attempted to go vegan though only for my health but it wouldn't last long after 2 weeks to a month I would give up and go straight back to my old ways. The desire to go vegan was always there but it took doing more research, watching videos etc and becoming vegan for animals rather than for myself as I've always loved animals even more than myself, plus I have & still struggle with caring about my own well being which now since I've been fully vegan since 01/15/2018 I am beginning to have more compassion for myself; so hopefully one day I will learn to love myself as much as I do animals. Plus I've noticed my out look on life has changed since becoming vegan. #vegan4life

And also I never like felt good I was always grumpy and angry at everyone around me now I am much happier and my other symptoms like back pain and shoulder pain are all gone now I have way more energy without the constant fatigue. I’m much happier person now than ever. It’s amazing how when you change what you eat it changes your whole perspective in every way.

I am not vegan but I am going down that road. I 💘 APPRECIATE your channel. You, Happy Healthy Vegan, Vegan Zombie are my favorites because you exude compassion. Which came up with everything you didn't expect from going vegan. Being a Christian, everything y'all had happen in your respective vegan journeys, I have happen in my Christian journey. People tell me their life. But I like that. Keep up the awesome work. "And some have compassion making a difference. " Jude verse 22. God bless.

All you said resonated with me. I would like to add just a couple of things: sometimes some people don't seem to care about veganism if I talk to them, but then I see them suddenly trying eating vegan food! That always surprises me so much and makes me happy. As for criticism, I sometimes feel really bad when someone writes 'healthy' on their clips and then uses a lot of oils (most vegans use coconut fat and coconut milk, butters, cheeses that contain that fat too) and other food that is not healthy at all. Having a channel and sharing recipes with others means... one affects other people's health quite a lot. That's a big responsibility. Actually, those fats have been shown to have negative effects on the arteries so vegans might end up having a bad healthy just as non vegan :( In such cases, I post a comment.

Compassion is a wonderful lens through which to view the world. Compassion is necessary for communication. Compassion is the desire to improve the situation for those in distress. Choosing a vegan lifestyle is an affirmation that one's committed to living a compassionate life that makes a better place for others -- human and nonhuman -- to live.

i identify with so many things you guys are saying! i'm definitely coming out of the angry vegan stage, took a few months lol, but it's crazy that once you actually start giving a shit about yourself, animals, and the environment is when people start having negatives things to say. so many family members seem colder towards me now, but it's great because it gets those thoughts about veganism rolling and being nice towards those people with questions/comments, instead of getting angry/offended and lecturing, is what will make them start thinking about going vegan and seeing it in a more positive/relatable way!

I love this video. I really resonate with the whole "finding more compassion for things outside of veganism" like the environment and trash and clothing. I never would have been interested in even watching documentaries and learning all the things they don't teach you in school had it not been for me stumbling into veganism. Dani said that she feels like maybe people in her family see her differently or maybe don't like her as much... and girl I FEEL YOU ON THIS. And I keep going back and forth like "No way, they are family! They love me no matter what." and that may be the case but there still is and, I think, will always be a wall up because they don't want to say anything stupid or they don't want me to start a conversation about veganism (which honestly I never do unless asked). The connection that people have with one another by way of food is huge in many cultures. And so not being able to connect with family members or friends by going out to dinner or normal holiday dinners is hard. Sure, we can go to dinner if there are vegan options for me but I'm always the one like "hey can I choose where we go because I don't eat just anything.." you know? Then I look rude when I'm trying to find a solution that works for all of us. I think there will always be struggles with that. There will always be a divide between people and the different lifestyles we choose to live by but I think maybe it's a true test to see who sticks around because they truly care about you and value your friendship more just by what you eat.

I've been vegan for a little over 2 months and have had SO many people criticize everything I eat! For me it was the other way around, I went vegan for the animals, and I was surprised by the effects it had on my health. I struggled with disordered eating for so long, and the second I went vegan, it stopped completely because I felt like I was nurturing my body instead of harming it. I haven't binged or puked a single time since the day I went vegan. Obviously I still have a lot of body image issues but I've never felt happier with myself than I do today. I'm never going back.

I feel that most of the changes I've noticed since going vegan have been positive ones. People do ask questions and offer unsolicited advice (and criticism), but I choose to see that as coming from a place of caring- obviously care for me over animals or the Earth, but ultimately, people who I'm close with want me to be healthy. While the societal view shifts and people recognize that we don't need to eat animal products to live and thrive, those of us who got to that point quicker could afford those taking more time some patience. I feel that most people I encounter are respectful and genuinely curious.. they ask about how I get certain nutrients or what my day of eating looks like because they actually want to know. Coworkers or family members go out of their way to be respectful of how I eat- for example: they bring fruit or veggies to work to share instead of chips and dip because they had me in mind... or my grandma looked up a recipe and made a special pot of vegan chilli for me on SuperBowl without me asking her to OR expecting her to! I will admit that I have exceptional awesome people in my life! When I went vegan I DEFINITELY did not expect it to be that way, but I've been pleasantly surprised! Also, I notice an awesome ripple effect.. through my family, coworkers, friends... many of them are incorporating plant-based meals into their lives and they say they think of me sometimes when making food choices.. one friend joked that I was in her head now! haha I'm the first person in my circle to go vegan, but I can see it rippling through those around me and I find that SO cool!

So first, I love your channel! I came across you guys randomly looking for some easy vegan choices (junk food 😂) that tastes good. I adopted a vegan diet within the last week after watching “what the health” and going through a health concern of my own where eliminating dairy is expected to help. I love the outlook you have with non-vegans. I was still eating meat and dairy a week ago so obviously, I can understand the taste for that stuff. I’m also a single mom of a 10 y/o and after learning what I have, I desperately want her away from animal products. Your videos like this, and the one about non-vegan spouses, help me understand I can’t change things overnight though. After doing the research I have, it’s frustrating to make her ground beef tacos or hear her say, “vegans die because they’re not getting protein”. I want to tell her she’s wrong but it also goes against everything I knew growing up and have taught her. I thought lean meat was a healthy source of protein. 🤦‍♀️ That said, I appreciate videos like this to remind me that even though I finally got it, others will take time, assuming they go vegan at all. Ultimately, it’s being a positive advocate for this lifestyle and not pushing too hard.

gary pack I’m not sure about the “hippie” stereotype but if that means I’m trying to do better for my health, my kid’s health, animals and our environment, then you’re spot on. Now that I have been made aware, through many scientific studies, that animal protein is causing a lot of our health issues, I will try to teach my kid better. I also won’t expect her to change overnight. For the time being, I can make my choices, being plant based, and I will let her make her own, being animal based. I get it, we were all raised believing meat and animal products were good for us. I now feel differently though and just like I won’t shame my kid for not understanding it better, I won’t with you. Good luck to you and your family! From- the “maybe” hippie.

@amandawatson435 5 лет назад
gary pack I could 100% see your perception a few weeks ago. However, I don’t now. The “few” studies you reference are actually many. On top of that, the studies that say we need animal products or that they’re healthy are directly from the agriculture system that want you to eat it and profit off of you. I’m honestly not here to change your mind, just like you won’t change mine. However, I have been recently introduced to so much information that I intend to absorb and use to better my life.

Pros for me since going vegan: I generally feel happier for what seems like no reason sometimes. Meal prepping can actually be pretty fast which I didn't think would be. It's also incredibly cheap & makes it easy to save money when you're saving for a new place. I also sleep better which I never expected. Cons: like you ladies have said, everyone wants to debate. & it's hard to not get frustrated when you have 2 or 3 people hammering questions at you all while they're eating pizza or fried chicken for lunch but if you were eating the same thing they'd say nothing. Another unexpected change which is more of a pro to me is that meat & cheese smells so unappetizing to me now. My mouth used to water at the smell of pork stew or grilled chicken. Now it smells like rotting sunbaked diarrhea. & walking past the cheese section of a grocery store smells like vomit or sweaty feet 😂 Cheese was a huge addiction for me. I ate it even when it made me nauseous. Now I can finally look at it & have no interest. Those are changes I never expected!!

I had a wiccan friend of mine tell me that humans need to eat red meat because the spiritual energy of animals is required for human soul cultivation or whatever. Weirdest excuse for eating red meat I have ever heard. The way my life has been changing as I've moved more and move towards vegan, and the way people have changed, has really opened my eyes a lot to the lies and weirdness human beings tell themselves in order to keep the blinders on. Thanks for the great talk!

Hey ladies, love your videos and have a question for the next one! One of the things I didn't expect when I went vegan was how much food waste would grow to upset me. When I see people throw out a perfectly good piece of meat for example it makes me so angry because I know all the suffering the animal had to go through... and now its corpse is ending up in the trash. There are also so many starving people in the world... and watching an apple go into the trash because it's a bit bruised or half a loaf of bread that's a day over the expiry date be thrown out makes my blood boil. What do you think about eating things that aren't 100% vegan if it prevents food waste? I would never eat meat or dairy or eggs, but for example my roommate offered me a box of cheerios (that aren't vegan because of the added vitamin D extracted from animal skin) that she was going to throw out if I didn't take. I took it because I felt guilty that an entire box of cereal is going in the trash but it is just sitting in my cupboard because it is such a moral dilemma LOL. Love you guys xoxo

natureasintended, if there were a way to produce egg without harming chicken, why would vegans be opposed to it? Eggs are not living creatures.
@savrose5060
@savrose5060 6 лет назад
The main thing vegans disagree with is suffering, not necessarily the physical consumption of eggs. The chickens that lay eggs are a different breed from those that are used for meat. So when male chicks are born, they are immediately killed as they cannot lay eggs and have no further use for the business. Even though eating an egg isn't eating an animal, there is a lot of animal suffering that comes along with the production of that egg and we don't want our dollars to fund that process. Plus, some also believe we shouldn't be utilizing animals for our own personal wants at all, even if the chickens are not suffering. Laying an egg is extremely taxing on a chickens body, and they often peck at unfertilized eggs to replenish nutrients that went into producing it.
@clearmist7170
@clearmist7170 6 лет назад
Sav Rose, if vegans found a way to eat eggs, then veganism could actually be sustainable and you wouldn't have to take all the supplements that they currently have to. Eggs are a great source of everything that you need. We need animal products as humans. Our first food was an animal product (breast milk).

I think a big thing with the non-vegans confessing their personal facts, is carnism. I believe we all as human want to be good, and us being vegan speaks to their deeper conscious and causes them to feel defensive & judged even when we’re not judging them I think they’re actually more deeply struggling with their own decisions & a big reason we have to defend our views is that defensiveness. Our choice to be vegan, makes them feel they aren’t being “a good enough person” & puts them on defensive or attack mode. Just another reason to give them more compassion ❤️

I have been vegetarian since Jan 1, 2017 with zero intention of becoming vegan and am now a newly transitioned vegan. I think that by wanting to change things in my life for health and my unwavering love and compassion to animals is what made me switch. My only regret is how long it took me. I tried going vegetarian 8 years ago after reading skinny bitch and only did okay. I got very unhealthy and then abandoned the idea. I was too uneducated, too picky of an eater or lazy and resorted back to what I knew. It didnt help that there was no support as everyone just casted judgement. This time around though I dont have the judgement just the normal " I couldn't do it, I like _______ too much". My husband went vegetarian with me so it is great that he is %80 to where I am so I dont feel to alone. I do not have any vegetarian or vegan friends but the friends I have are very supportive and even panicked when she accidentally sent me a snap of her cooking a steak. They seem to open to trying what I eat, so long as I disclose what is in it lol. I am glad i stumbled upon this channel as it seems to have a classy and supportive comment section and you ladies speak well on the topic of "vegan".

I definitely didn’t expect everyone I hangout with to assume I couldn’t go out to eat with them because there wasn’t anything obviously vegan on the menus. Like I would just not get invited and eventually I had to be like you all realize I can get a salad with no cheese or creamy dressings and be good to go???? Or I can get veggies and a baked potato etc. Also I tend to bring food places or a drink etc. and all the sudden everyone around me thinks they know what I can and can’t eat. They’ll say “Oh that’s no vegan you can’t have that” and I’ll have to explain that it is and I’m fine. Also I hate the question that always follows after I say I’m gluten free and vegan “So what can you eat then?”

When I went vegan I was so happy and felt so good and we went to Mexico which I was so excited far and we swam and did all sorts of stuff but I notice that we went to a lot of restaurants that had animal products in everything so I told my mom and she took us to a vegan restaurant and she’s vegetarian. But my sibling weren’t vegan and when we got their they had the rudest most disappointed look on their faces and I felt really sad and ashamed and don’t like eating in front of them sometimes it makes me really sad because after that they seemed to avoid me a little bit and every now and then they would asked me if I wanted eggs and bacon or something and they would say oh wait your vegan and that really hurts sometimes and I told my mom I’m not really a big fan of vegan cheese and she said well then maybe u don’t need to be vegan and eat a little more. And that also brings me down she seems to say that even if we’re at a restaurant I asked the waiter if the bread had any egg or milk in it and my mom said no it doesn’t matter just eat it 😰😰😰

I didn't expect to feel so empowered and I must admit I was a little judgmental but then I realised that I was the same before I woke up so I'd be hypocritical to judge. Then again I am plant based right now. Nearly there. Hard going to a bar/pub when u can't exactly ask if their beers on tap are vegan. Veganism isn't about perfection anyway. It's about limiting our Impact as much a practically possible. Totally agree with whole video. Loved it. Especially comment about seeing your friends in a new different light. It's weird.
