For long term turbo life, if you dont have a turbo timer, make sure to keep your engine idle for 30 seconds to 1 min 30 seconds depending on how hot your engine is. You want to let cooler oil get into your turbo and let your turbo cool down so your turbo doesnt burn oil when you turn off the car.

I just read on more modern turbo cars there's actually an electric pump that continues to pump oil once turned off. My 2008 Twin Turb Range Rover Sport has it. Its an electric humming sound. Older Turbo'd cars would need it.

Excellent info , never lug that turbo , just a side note , I know a 67 year old woman who has a 2002 WRX , she has 324k and nothing done and burns no oil ! Also know a young guy who's first car was a 2003 WRX , it was mint with only 80k , I know cause I sold it to him , after one month .........knock , knock , just shows you that it's about how you drive it ! Dumb question. 2018 STI here. My first turbo. My first Subaru. What rpm is lugging it? Can you cruise at 2K or keep it at 3-3.5K? I now understand don't flog it unless you're around 3K+ and do it gently. Thanks in advance. Also, this thing is hard to drive smoothly. First to second can be tricky. It seems to like 3.2-3.5K. Sound right? Thanks to all in advance.
@stowa165
@stowa165 4 года назад
So what you are saying is, don't buy a Subaru because you won't be able to enjoy it, you have to drive it like the 67 year old woman? Craziness. 2006 Subaru Forester STI with a Blouch Dom3 blew up all the time until i got it tuned properly. No issues for the last seven years, 340WHP on pump, 450WHP on VP109, 11sec grocery getter. Subarus are not eggs once you know what you are doing.
@AmirPomen

@@31Kittystyles Yea... General rule of thumb... U can go heavy throttle anything above 3.5k rpm... On cruise as low as 2k rpm not adviseable if there is uneven traffic speed or during up on road incline... On flat road yes u can keep cruising around there... But if need acceleration even mild overtaking.. better to downshift 1 or 2 gear then free to go.. 🍻

Man, I saw this video one day too late. I was cruising around the Nürnberg loop and found myself in six gear, but Welo and power bogging down about 1000 RPM. So I figured I just give it a ton of gas and a get right out of that little bogging state. Boy that was dumb my engine a literally exploded. At first I thought it was may be There airbag recall on my 335I, but my hands are still intact, so them I’m assumed it would likely be the blower motor wires, since I skipped the recall too! I’ve been literally gathering All the small broken pieces of my engine block. Scattered all over the road! I had just rented a giant warehouse storage unit where is pissing together all the little pieces of the car, kind of like how they did for the space shuttle that exploded! Excellent video sir. I've had turbo vehicles in the past to include a 2011 Mitsubishi Ralliart and 2016 Ford Focus ST. Both great vehicles for what they were, but with my recent new WRX purchase, I'm aiming to be a LOT more careful on how I treat and drive the car. These points are spot on especially that last one, I've made the mistake of dogging it in 6th gear in the ST going up a decent grade mountain and started running into issues. Just drop a gear or two and let the engine sing like it should.

1-Dont lugging the engine (this can be expanded into many ways of badly lugging the engine and risk wearing conrod bearing, broken ringland on subaru engine) i- dig launch on sticky tyre/high grip surface without half clutching..let the cluth ride and slip slightly untill the car properly moving..also saves the driveshaft...and yes watching infront of my eyes a fellow scooby friend getting conrod noise when he lug the engine on drag launch ii-hill climb/accelerating wot in high gear without letting the engine rpm rise up and car rolls into higher rpm...i always let the engine rpm rise slowly in low throttle situation and after above 3k rpm swithing into wot (ie: always downshift before doing overtaking or heavy acceleration to keep rev over 3.5k rpm) iii-alway keep light throttle during driving while the car water temp still below 85degree C

Oh man, I totally remember learning about sediment, water, and micro-biological growth in fuel tanks when I reclassed for 92F. If I remember correctly they called it BS&W. They told us to stay away from those run-down gas stations and not to get fuel when the gas station is being refilled by the tanker, because that can disturb the sediment and the pumps can pick it up and it can end up in your fuel tank. I haven't heard many people talk about it and I think it's an interesting thing people don't really think about.
@Smeedia

Had no idea that they talk about that in the Army, its a real issue that most people are not aware of and can have some damaging effects 😖

@@Smeedia for sure, we learned a lot in fueler school. The fuel standards for aviation are crazy! The book standard for water content is 10ppb, but aviation until want no more than 3-4ppb! Which is nuts! But it makes sense because when there's an aircraft that goes down, the first thing they look at is the fuel. I learned way more about applicable stuff in fuel school vs truck driver school haha.

This is a great vid. The other day I got on my car getting onto the freeway and had a sudden drop in DAM to 0.938/0.938 as well as constant Fine knock adjustment 0.00 to 0.26 under load. I was really worried. I looked into the issue on NASIOC, forums there had the same issue due to high atmospheric temps above 90 or bad fuel. To remedy this it was recommended to reset the Cobb Accessport, add Lucas Octane Boost and refuel with better gasoline. So far it’s good, I won’t wot until this fuel with octane booster and bad fuel is completely replaced with good fuel. I’m really glad you brought this up. Thanks amigo 🤙🏼

Don't use the auto start-stop features on turbo cars in hot weather. Keep the oil flowing at the stop lights.

Watching this video after a Cooper S Clubman with a cracked cylinder head. I think I could have done with more oil changes and it would drink oil till the oil warning light came on if doing a hard corner so I'd keep topping it up. Also it was the N14 engine. I've heard driving hard and shutting off suddenly is bad cause stationary oil. I think the only thing that could have preserved that engine is never rev it or have fun in it. I didn't rev it to redline cold. The cylinder head finally failed accelerating from a stop and getting to 4000 rpm but I think it was on its way out. The other thing is petrol - as high octane as possible? After all the effective compression in a turbo engine is going to be extremely high, even if the CR is lower to compensate for expected boost.

Just my opinion, but I've had a TMIC and a FMIC and unless you have a built motor with 500+ HP I prefer TMIC. The boost comes on a lot quicker. There's 4 more bends and 5ft more feet of tube. Of course a FMIC runs cooler than a stock TMIC. If its a 105° outside it wont matter if you have a top or a front mount. Does a FMIC look cool absolutely lol. Just my thoughts. Not trying to say you're wrong or anything just What I like. Thanks for making all these videos I know its a lot of work!

@@Smeedia Yes, this is another must do, unless you are running a turbo timer, if you've been cranking on it, you should let it idle for at least 3 minutes before shutting it off. I should try to grab a video of it, but we have a perfect teaching example of this at my work. our skidsteer is getting old an worn, and when you shut it down, you can hear the turbo spinning for about a full minute after the engine is off. Well the same is happening in our cars, just our bearings are in much better shape so we can't hear it! LOL
@Smeedia
@Smeedia 4 года назад
With newer turbo engines I disagree, especially with thr STIs and WRXs.the tuebos are water cooled so even after you've shut it off the turbo still receives some coolant flowing through it that it will cool it off. Unless your full track day I don't see a need to let the car idle down. For older cars that do not utilize coolant then I 100% agree 🙏
@djteako
@djteako 4 года назад
@@Smeedia Yes, agreed, it does get the coolant flow, but not the oil flow, which is important to save those precious turbo bearings. My general rule is simply, drive nicely for the last few miles or minutes before shutting it down LOl

@Sean Moore I haven’t driven a manual in close to 10 years, I am very strongly debating on brushing up on it to be able to get a manual. I live in Los Angeles, so that’s the main reason I thought CVT would work better, with traffic and all. But honestly the options are very limited when it comes to CVT, so I might end up getting a manual in the end. Still up in the air, but it would definitely help to know what my limitations are if I do go CVT, before I actually purchase it.

Great video. I went through some 107 deg weather while driving around 80 mph in my 2021 Outback XT. Seems the intercooler would be worthless in cases like this. Does this mean my engine produces less hp? Is my turbo insanely hot? Does my car pull timing?
@Smeedia
@Smeedia 2 года назад
Yes and no, so with hotter air it becomes less dense so less dense air means less air goinf into the engine. Which in turn means less power. It will pull a small amount but nothing to stress about 🙏
