Just what on Earth happened to the Huns; possibly one of history's most infamous group of marauding nomads who wrought chaos and conquest throughout Central Asia and Europe? The Huns have gone down in Western history as one of the most brutal, savage and fearsome opponents of the Roman Empire, but where did they originally come from and what happened to them after the days of Attila?
In today's video, we're going to be looking at the origins of the Huns and other Eurasian nomads who invaded Europe from lands afar, and see just what happened to their descendants from a genetic, political and cultural point of view. Thanks for watching!

"Ladies and Gentlemen! The Turul is an ancient image the ancient image of the Hungarians. The Turul is belong to our blood and to our soil. The Turul is the symbol of the Hungarians living today, the Hungarians who have already died and the Hungarians just to be born. The Turulbird tells us that there is only one Homeland, that can unite all the Hungarians within the Trianonborders and beyond. From the time we are born as Hungarians, our seven tribes form a blood alliance, our Saint István king establishes a state, our armies lose the battle at Mohács. The Hungarian is a worldnation. The Nationborders and the Trianonborders do not coincide, consequently millions were scattered outside of our thousand years old accommodation. We come together, we usually erect a Turul to ourselves, to find answers to questions such as who we Hungarians are, what we can do separately, and what we must do together Ladies and Gentlemen! Today is St. Mihály's Day! This is what Scripture gives us today. There was a battle in heaven: Mihály and his angels attacked the dragon. The dragon and his angels were defending, but they could not resist and there was no room for them in heaven. Mihály and his angels overthrew the great dragon, the prodigal who is the devil himself, the Satan, who seduces the whole world. His angels were pushed back to the ground and crashed together with him. We do not know the means of the fight, we do not know the circumstances of the fight, we only know the result of the fight. There was no place for Satan, because Mihály, who is love, service, and serenity, did not leave him any. I mean, any place." Fun fact: there were two groups of Huns. The one we hear of most and that this video talks about were the faction that invaded Europe and clashed with the Romans. But another group split off while still in Central Asia and moved south, invading Persia/Iran and India and carving out empires there before being conquered themselves by a later wave of central asian invaders.

@@stolzerpfalzer768 Hungarians/Magyars weren't (isn't) a unified nation. The 7 tribes that arrived to the Carpathian basin had closer-further kinship with each other as well as the Hungarians-Avars-Huns. Like another example of the Transsilvanian Saxons. They originally came from today's Netherlands. They weren't exactly Saxons not entirely Germans but they were close related to Germans so over the centuries they became Germans. If a tribe is defeated and/or their state/empire collapses that doesn not mean that they simply disappear. When Árpád's united tribes moved in to the Carpathian basin they were like "welcomed" by the Avars and they together began to build up the principality.

The Cossacks originally were a military class from the Ruthenian part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, mostly dominated by the Ruthenian Orthodox (aka Ukrainian) people and organized by the Orthodox Ruthenian nobility. There's some speculation as to how they started, with the most probable possibilities being either that they were remnants of the Orthodox Cuman resistance(which was quite fierce, but not well-documented in English) against the Golden Horde or simply the border guard against the Tatar raids, during the colonization of the depopulated by the Mongol invasion Central and Eastern Rus lands, which was organized by the Ruthenian Orthodox nobility from the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The first official organization of the Cossacks - the Zaporozian Sich, was established by a Ruthenian magnate Dmytro Vyshnevetsky. Also, the Russian Cossacks, originating from Don, are famous as the cavalarymen. The Ukrainian Cossacks were mostly seafarers and infantrymen.

What happened to them? they are still alive, their name now is called Szekely (Szeklers), living in Transilvania, modern Romania. After Attila was poisoned, his sons started a civil war, which weakened the huns position so much in europe, that their german, goth, avar, alan, and other subdued clans did revolt against their former masters and succeded in defeating them. One of the last surviving sons of Attila, called Csaba, settled his people in the easily defensive territory of inner transilvania, surrounded by mountains. After that he went east, to find the brothers of the Huns, called Magyars, and to ask for their help. He went for that journey, but never returned. However the Magyars came, found the Szekelys where Csaba left them, still surviving and thriving, and they were integrated into the newly found Hungarian Kingdom. The rest is history, but even until today, the Szekelys differentiate themselfs from other hungarians, even though their language is the same.

Sadly there is so many wrong information out there. Like in this video. The magyars did NOT come from the north and they WERE hunic related . In the carpatian base there was always a core population related to huns. This population was pulsing between the west and east. You can call them Avars, Magyars , European Huns, Asian Huns or Santa Cause, they were the same people, same family if you like. During the time and during the long distances they may have mixed with others or had some changes but still they were carrying the same ancient gene, culture. And magyars are NOT finno-ugoric origin.

@@letsspeakhungarian6626 Some pretty strong revisionist folktale history there. The Huns were documented by Romans and Goths alike to be unspeakably savage and irreligious. The Mongols gained a similar reputation 700 years later, along with their notable administrative, cultural, and legal accomplishments that stand out in history. You missed the part in the video where they addressed this with DNA evidence. The Franks and Romans annihilated most of the Avar successor presence in the Balkans. Magyar DNA is not the same; Hunnic does present as a Turkic language or at least some type of Altaic, with Germanic names in some leaders. Not saying that steppe or any neighboring peoples don't mix. But the Slavs, Goths/Cumans, Iranic Bulgars (that we know were not originally Turkic from DNA testing) all joined the Greeks, Dacians, Illyrians in the Balkans for hundreds of years before the Magyars, with a distinct language and Uralic DNA, began making incursions into the area. The Magyars did not have the same reputation as the Huns and I don't know why you would want them to. They were seen as highly effective lightning horse nomad raiders that kept much of Eastern and Southern Europe guessing for decades. The movements of the hybrid Gepids are much better documented as are the latter movements of the eastern White Huns leading up to the Magyar invasions as well.

ahh the Huns, in anticipation of the live-action Mulan edit: I've always wondered what the relationships between the Huns, the Hungarians, and the Xiongnu are.
@raguelelnaqum
@raguelelnaqum 4 года назад
Ripping this from a dude on Masman's reddit- Basically the Huns weren't Xiongnu. Nor were they Uralic Magyar. It's kind of like how the Mongols conquered the Tartars, and the Europeans confused the Mongols for Tartars because there were several Tartar levies in the Genghis Khan's armies. Only in this case the Europeans confused the Huns for Magyars and the Chinese confused them for Xiongnu. The Huns were an Avesto-Tokharian people, who conquered the Steppe Xiongnu and later several of the proto-Magyar Uralic peoples, and incorporated members of both groups into their armies. Unlike the Magyars however, the Xiongnu lost their homelands before the Hunnic Empire collapsed, and once it did they were unable to find a new homeland. This resulted them in being assimilated by groups such as the various Tunguskics, Mongols, Manchu, Mandarins, Hui, Uralics and so on. They disappeared swiftly as an independent peoplegroup after Attila died. Conversely, we know for a fact that the Bulgars subsumed the Western Huns and there were several hybrid Hunno-Bulgar kingdoms for a while, the Khuni/Chuni Huns were eventually intermarried with Turkic peoples to birth the Kumyks in the kingdom of Djidan about 300 years later, and the rest were subsumed by the Khazar Kaghanate. Basically,the main way you can distinguish between the three groups is that the Magyar still exist as an unadultured culture and peoplegroup in the modern era, Hunnic culture still exists but only as part of hybrid traditions amongst the Bulgarians and Kumyks, while the Xiongnu only exist as genetic predecessors, with their culture being almost entirely wiped out.

Great job, I like your video! One thing I dare to correct is the Magyar´s name given by the west - Hungarian, Ungar, Hongroi etc - it comes from the Onogurs, a tribal confederation which partly integrated into the Magyars in the Pontic regions (onogur means ten arrows). However, the Onogurs were related to the Bulgars, they all being in some line connected to the Huns. Dr Török and dr Neparáczki investigated the genetics of the Magyar conquerors and found out that they were in 30-40% of East-Asian origin, presumabely Hunnic. The explanation that the Hungarian legends according to which they descended from the Huns were written on demand so that they could claim former Hunnic territory is not logical. This is a popular, ideology-based view which degrades the tradition as some tale gving it no credibility. The legends are geographically quite plausible, they describe the Black Sea region, the mixing with the Alans etc. It´s quite possible that at least the Magyar Árpád dynasty was from the same lineage as Attila, hence they preserved the tradition.
@attila3231
@attila3231 3 года назад
In what language is Onogur in 10 arrow? On-ogur on-10 in Turkish, ogur has no interpretation in Turkish. Josephus Flavius azt is írja: „Magóg és Hunor népei az áradás óta itt vannak. Területük Spanyolországtól a Tanais (Don) folyóig húzódott. Magog megalapította az ő nevű magarjait, amelyeket a görögök szkítáknak neveznek. ”Ennek az ősi rokonságnak a tényét hangsúlyozza az a tény is, hogy az etruszkok, mielőtt a mai Közép-Olaszország területére (Umbria, Toszkána) költöztek volna, a Kárpát-medencében, a Duna-Balkánon éltek.

I think Shan Yu's guys are supposed to be Xiongnu but Disney just called them Huns in the English version because Hun is an easier word for the English audience while Xiongnu would be more difficult to pronounce and understand. The Bulgars (also Bulghars, Bulgari, Bolgars, Bolghars, Bolgari,[1] Proto-Bulgarians[2]) were Turkic semi-nomadic warrior tribes that flourished in the Pontic-Caspian steppe and the Volga region during the 7th century. Emerging as nomadic equestrians in the Volga-Ural region, according to some researchers their roots can be traced to Central Asia.[3] During their westward migration across the Eurasian steppe the Bulgars absorbed other ethnic groups and cultural influences, including Hunnic and Indo-European peoples.[4][5][6][7][8][9] Modern genetic research on Central Asian Turkic people and ethnic groups related to the Bulgars points to an affiliation with Western Eurasian populations.[9][10][11] The Bulgars spoke a Turkic language, i.e. Bulgar language of Oghuric branch.[12] They preserved the military titles, organization and customs of Eurasian steppes,[13] as well as pagan shamanism and belief in the sky deity Tangra.[14] The Bulgars became semi-sedentary during the 7th century in the Pontic-Caspian steppe, establishing the polity of Old Great Bulgaria c. 635, which was absorbed by the Khazar Empire in 668 AD. In c. 679, Khan Asparukh conquered Scythia Minor, opening access to Moesia, and established the First Bulgarian Empire, where the Bulgars became a political and military elite. They merged subsequently with established Byzantine populations,[15][16] as well as with previously settled Slavic tribes, and were eventually Slavicized, thus forming the ancestors of modern Bulgarians.[17] The remaining Pontic Bulgars migrated in the 7th century to the Volga River, where they founded the Volga Bulgaria; they preserved their identity well into the 13th century.[12] The Volga Tatars and Chuvash people claim to be originated from the Volga Bulgars.

@jimmypage2499
@jimmypage2499 4 года назад
Well thanks to the ottomans we may never know how wrong you are. As in this video there are some deeds given to the slavs that either did not happen or are largely misinterpreted. Their conquest at the hands of the Huns adding to their ranks are largely exaggerated where as the Bulgarians who actually warred alongside them are almost always never mentioned. The youngest of Atila's sons Irnik/Ermak actually inherited the Bulgarians to rule over. This opens the way to few misconceptions. The slavs and the Bulgarians just to humor the most popular theory aren't one and the same but slavs are credited as coming to the Balkans earlier despite some Bulgarian feats. The Romans themselves mention Bulgarians in the IIc. A certain individual speaks about losing the land and that Moesia(northen Bulgaria) belongs to the Bulgarians. Misionis rex Vulgares. However Paisii Hilendarski father of modern Bulgaria wrote a book and used references from other books and texts that the otomans had yet to burn when he calls out the Bulgarian people originally Slavonic who fathered and left the slavic branch in their pursuit to the ancestral land. The second misconception is the title of Khan. In St. Parkersburg there is an original copy from the 8-th c. of the Bulgarian Rulers and it begins with Kanas Avitohol who ruled from about 145 AD. and continues with Atila's son Irnik from the Dulos clan in the mid 5-th c. That same clan is attributed with creating Bulgaria in 681. but in that treaty the Romans recognize the enlargement of Asparuh's Bulgaria not it's creation. Every name that ruled over in Bulgaria has had the title kanas (Княз) no khans (Ханове) or anything of the like. almost all of the names in that list are iranic Kubrat his son Asparuh and his whole lineage including. Also in what world would you believe that Asparuh and his tribe numbering around 10 000 women, children and old folk included would beet a profesional Roman army numbering between 40 and 60 000 men a battle ready fleet and a very determined emperor? Obvously the local slavonic farmers further aded to his ranks and the romanized Thracians helped him but why would they do that? A large portion of our DNA can be traced to the Pontic steps that is correct. Paisii Hilendarski wrote that in the mid 18c that among the many ethnicities that formed Bulgaria was from the Cimerian tribes aka modern Crimea. those Bulgarians who claim to be decendent from Volga Bulgaria are from at least three oblasti (areas/states) with Tatarstan and Chuvashia the most vocal among them. Unfortunately they are a minority there and can not over rule the majority that are Tatars who themselves want a free tatar state in which they can rule themselves in.

Study of the Huns was also fascinating to me when I was studying history and culture in college in the 90’s. I discovered a word from old Persian sources “hyon” that has been looked at as a possible source of the origin of the name Hun. I am sure academia has found other candidates by now as well. Regardless, the word Hun - which is And English corruption; much like the word “Turk” or “Turkey” are English corruptions as well (Is not “Turkey”, it is “Turkiye”/ Iranian: “Tor-kee-yeh). Much of Ferdousi’s Shahnahmeh (Persia’s “Book of Kings”/ The blue print for Irelnd’s The Tain And on how to rescue your culture’s stories and myths in the face of a conqueror/colonial power/empire) spoke of the long struggles between the “Heroes of Iran (‘Homeland of the Aryan/Iranian) and Turan (“Homeland of the Turks; which was somewhere northeast of Iran). Whenever I'm reading the history of some ancient site or people...I hear Masaman's voice narrating it :) It reminds me of that excerpt from the Gettysburg Address, "...and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth." Well a lot of peoples, nations and empires crumbled into the dust of history so anything can happen....Thanks for the video!

Things like this are as interesting as it gets for me - like where cultures collide, border areas between several different cultures - like Anatolia/Turkey - where Europe/Christianity meets the Middle East/Islam - also places/people like Hungary, the "-stan" countries, the Uyghur people, the Uralic people you were talking about (this video is the first I've heard of them)... But if any of that makes sense - just basically places where cultures collide and mix and peoples with diverse genetics from many different places - that sort of thing is ultra interesting to me - so basically, everything in this video is super fascinating to me.

@@yargocebeturkmen3633 That's pretty cool. The area of/around Turkey, the Turkic(ish) people and their history, culture and genetics definitely fascinate me. Szekely is pronounced Say-K (K as in OK). Little fun fact: Louis Ck's last name is Szekely, but he knew English people can't pronounce it so he uses the similar sounding ck.

in Turkey, it is taught that the fall of Rome is related to a massive “mysterious” migration from Asia, but never affiliated to the Huns due to respect and claimed cultural heritage I assume.

The huns did push out the Ostrogoths and Visigoths (germanic goths originally from sweden) of Eastern Europe and the Alans (Ossetians or Iranians) into the area of the Roman Empire. Iberian peninsula received many personal names of germanic origin and even some placenames like Alanquer comes from Alan/Aryan and Germanic Kirk/church so it means Alan Church.

we call ourself magyars, but our chronicles said we was part of the hunnic empire like many other nomadic tribes that time, also our first ruler dynasty the "Árpáds" belived they are the descendens of Attila. When we came to europe we have a alliance of 7 big tribes and few minor tribes, the leader tribe what later give us the Árpád-dynasty called Megyer, later everybody use this name and we become magyars. or at least this is what we learned :D

Baghatur Tarkhan Hungarians are not turks and was never. Don’t claim everything to the turks, or you are not better than a nationalist. And btw, if we hungarians had ever something to do with you guys, its over, since the Ottoman Empire wanted conquer all of Hungary, but couldn’t handle the “magyar faszagyerekek” ;)

Baghatur Tarkhan We would have made them kneel down, if basically the whole world was not against us. Search Matthias Corvinus, in Europe at the time Hungary had the biggest and most modern army. And show much more respect to us like 2. Mehmed did to the hungarian King Matthias:” Amongst the worlds princes, only me and him are worthy for the regal name.”

Hun means people in mongolian. The huns were definitely the ancestors of the mongols. Xiongnu, Huns, Mongol empire are all the same people, mongols. Mongols and Turks lived amongst each other and fought together just like in the mongol empire. Other nations were taken over or joined the Huns/Mongols, resulting in a mix of various nationalities all fighting together.
