Just who are the Tatars? The Tatars are arguably Europe's oldest remaining Islamic community, stretching back many hundreds (possibly over a thousand) years and today number in the tens of millions. Scattered over many parts of Eastern Europe, the Tatars are divided between a multitude of different groups with very diverse origins and histories.
The different Tatar groups, which includes those with a range of phenotypes and cultures; from more East Asian, European or Middle Eastern-looking individuals as well as those belonging to traditional Islamic, Christian, pagan and even Jewish communities. Thanks for watching!

Buten Tatarlarga biz Korea Tatarlar salam aytamuz. 안녕하세요. 타타르 민족 의 선조 나라 사람입니다. The ethnic origin of the Tatar began in ancient Korea and Manchuria. 1) They were recorded, for the first time in history, in the Orkhon Turkic Steles (Stone monument) built for Bilge Kagan and his younger brother Ko'l Tegin in 730~740s. 2) Later, recorded about them for the 1st time in book form. 3) Based on these records, the Tatars were originally Koguryeo-an (ancient Korean) people who fled to the Eastern Turk Kaghanate (modern day Mongolia, Tuva, and Hakkaz, Altai mountain areas) due to the collapse of Koguryeo in 668 AD as the result of the war between Tang--Silla allies v.s. Koguryeo Kingdom in 668AD. 4) The ethnic name of Tatar comes from ancient Korean word "Taedaero (Prime Minister vice cum Defense Minister of Koguryeo Kingdom)". No famous scholars of the West and East such as Baskakov, Yeremiyev, Budagov, Berezin, Fakiyev, Ahsen Batur… etc) could ever figure this out because they did not understand Korean language and history except for Hive Han Abulghazi Khan several hundred years ago (because he was on of the descendants of ancient Koreans). But you can read more details here in the book 고구려 발해인 칭기스 칸(Koguyreo-Barhae-an Ghenghiz Khan) written by 전원철 박사 who is me. pp. 182~247: search.naver.com/search.naver?where=nexearch&sm=top_sly.hst&fbm=0&acr=1&ie=utf8&query=%EC%A0%84%EC%9B%90%EC%B2%A0+%EB%B0%95%EC%82%AC They joined the Eastern Turkic Kaghanate and became the Son-in-law tribe of Buk Chor ( 𐰴𐰯𐰍𐰣 𐰴𐰍𐰣 Qapaγan) Qaγan, the father of Princess Acena and uncle of Ku'l Tegin and Bilge Kagan. 5) They lived there and partly Turkicized as time passed by. So, they became Turkic speaking people eventually, but they still preserve their ethnic name Khorai=Khongurai=Tadar. After 840, the Eastern Turkic Kaganate collapsed as the result of the Uighur upsurge and revolution against the Eastern Turkic Kagan, Ozmish. 6) As a result, some Tatar tribes ran away with the Turks towards the west via Siberia and some tribes joined the Uighur Kagan and made a new dynasty. The famous Ko Sanggun who escorted Uigur princess to Tang State was a Tatar Chieftain. 7) These Tatars later migrated to the modern day Tataristan and other parts of the world and they were localized with other Turkic and Slavic group of people and, ethnically, they also changed their appearances. On the 2nd link above, (www.worldatlas.com/articles/w.../ Who are the Tartar People? - WorldAtlas) it is wrongly said: " The name Tatar may have been coined in the 5th century by nomadic Mongolic-speakers in the Tatar confederation.", But this is not true. They were not "Mongolic-speakers", but Korean-speakers. Khorai means Korea and Kon-gurai (Kon-Khorai) means Ko-gureyo (Great-Korea). There are no such words like Khorai or Kongurai nor Tatar in Mongol vocabulary except that the Mongols adopted the word "Tatar" without knowing the meaning. However, Chinghiz (Ghenghiz) Khan, the Great Mongol leader, and the World Conqueror, shares the same blood line with the Ha-Khans of Tatar Kaganate because both of them are descendants of the Royal Family of Koguryeo Kingdom. So, Temujin Uge (and Kori Boka, Chieftains of the Tatars) who were (was) captured by Yesugay Baatar, the father of Chinghiz Khan, has the same personal name of Temujin, which is the name of the 3rd King of Kogureyo Kingdom (37 BC -668 AD), King Taemushin (Great Godly Martial King). Regarding the origin of Tatar Kingdom in Kazakhstan and Siberia around Irtish River, and how it is related to the ancient Koreans, you may read my articles here (1~3 from the top), using Google translator because my articles are written in Korean. I've traveled 5000 miles across the Great Eurasian Steppe. From the land of Ainus to the land of Tatars, from where the East is born to where the West ends. Every place I go holds something fascinating. The history of land, the history of its people - the good, the bad, the tragic and the violent - a mere lifetime is not enough to fully appreciate it. So thank you for you for keeping the record and memory alive. May the peace be with you, Masaman.

TARTAR were originally all Mongols or tribe related to them. Round faced Asain. But through time they got mixed with turks and many of these people today lives Crimea Uzbekistan and others including kazan, so it has confused allot of people who were tartar originally. The same story goes with cossock or kazakil in the region nearl Ukriane. They were all mixed people most with Turks and few others but their features were mostly round. cossack weapon showes they used ASIAN types of weapon totally different to European weapons of the time. Unfortunately they dissappeared because they were already mixed and then end up been too mixed with others. However in Crimea you can still see some old round faces of who they originally were.

Being Tatar, I can say that this video is quite accurate. You've done a huge research, man! But I must disagree at 10:09 - Volga Tatar language is very different from Chuvash. Old Volga Bulgar language, which was closely related to Chuvash, had become extinct during the Golden Horde period and have been replaced by the Kipchak Turkic language, from which the modern Volga Tatar dialect have originated. As a native speaker of Volga Tatar I understand 99% of Siberian Tatar and Bashkir, and 95% of Crimean Tatar, but I only understand no more than 10% of Chuvash language, 'cause it's completely different.

I am a Korean who is interested in the Tatar people. In Korea's ancient history, we had exchanges with various ethnic groups such as the Xiongnu, Mongols, and Tatars. Koreans view the ancient Goguryeo people, who rode horses and shot arrows, as a glorious part of our past. Korean traditional archery is also famous for its long range. Tatars seem to have a diverse range of appearances. Some look like East Asians, while others look like Slavs or Persians. Although they originated in Mongolia, they seem to have mixed with other groups over time. When I see people of European and Korean mixed heritage, they sometimes look like Tatars to me. maybe Tatars are Eurasian that is connected Europe to East Asia.

@@arifshaikh-nv2ky No, tatars are not mixed race. Tatars, Mongols, Turks all originated from Mongolian-Manchurian Region. Overtime Turkic tribes started migrating from mongolia to westward till Caucasus, Ukraine and East Europe. Three turkic empires enabled the expansion and migration of turkic tribes out of Mongolia. 1. Xiongnu empire 200 BC - 0 AD, 2. Rouran Khaganate 200 AD - 400 AD, 3. Gokturk Khaganate 550 AD - 650 AD. Huns migrated during Rouran khaganate in 400 AD. Tatars migrated from mongolia under Chengiz khan (1206 AD) and successors. Later when mongols conquered various turkic tribes in modern russia and east europe, these turkic tribes were also called Tatars hereon because mongols eliminated tribal identities of turks and assimilated them with tatars.
@muhammadadeel8639
@muhammadadeel8639 Год назад
The koreans also most likely migrated from Mongolia-Manchuria Region to korean peninsula. I have a theory that Gokturks/Gog-turks and Gogureyo/Gok-Korea (37 BC - 660 AD) were somehow related as both use the name Gok/Gog at their start. Perhaps Turks, Koreans, Manchurians, Mongols, Tatars all have common origin North of Han china. Another thing is the culture of Mongolia-Manchuria region is influenced by Han chinese. Eg, the rulers of Mongols/tatars/turks were originally called as Han (Khan). Meaning they associated themselves with Han chinese. Eg, Chengiz Han

Men Koreliman. Koguryeo Kingdom. 4) The ethnic name of Tatar comes from ancient Korean word "Taedaero (Prime Minister vice cum Defense Minister of Koguryeo Kingdom)". They joined the Eastern Turkic Kaghanate and became the Son-in-law tribe of Buk Chor ( 𐰴𐰯𐰍𐰣 𐰴𐰍𐰣 Qapaγan) Qaγan, the father of Princess Acena and uncle of Ku'l Tegin and Bilge Kagan.

@Rose indo That's total bs. There are hardcore Muslims here in Tatarstan, as well as there are hardcore Christians, say, in the US, but the wast majority of population doesn't dress like Muslims. Take a look at photos of Kazan, for example (which is where I live). You won't see one person dressed like that (not that there is anything wrong with it, but you should understand that by this point Tatars are just like any other western people in that regard).

Thank you for the interesting video about Tatars. I am Volga Tatar myself. I grew up in Kazan, the capital of Tatarstan. Today’s Tatarstan is located on the area of the previously independent country Volga Bulgaria, with the capital of Bulgar. The remains of that city are now became an cultural museum. Volga Bulgars established by one of the sons of Kubrat, while another his son Asparukh established Bulgaria in the Balkans. Later on they accepted Orthodox Christianity. Volga Bulgars were located on the northern part of the Silk Road and were trading extensively with the south. That’s why in 922 Volga Bulgars accepted Islam as the official religion (not in 13-th century). This fact was recorded by Ibn Fadlan, one of the participants of the delegation from Baghdad (there is a loose interpretation of this journey in the movie “The 13-th Warrior “ with Antonio Banderas). In 1223 Volga Bulgars repulsed mongol invasion, but in 1236 he mongol hordes overwhelmed the resistance in conquered Volga Bulgaria. After that Volga Bulgaria became a part of the Golden Horde. However, the people of Volga Bulgaria never called themselves Tatars until 1552 when Russian Hordes conquered Volga Bulgars and started calling them the Tatars.

Thank you, my friend! I am a Bulgarian (Danube). I live in Canada. Everything you said is 100% correct. Mongols were only the elite of the Empire of Chinggis khan. Their army consisted mainly of Turkic Kumans (Kipchaks). They killed many Bulgars (we call them ancient Bulgarians or proto-Bulgarians) and imposed their language on Volga Bulgaria. But the proto-Bulgarian culture survived someway. Ask yourself why "Kazan Tatars" are the highest educated population in Russia. Ivan the Terrible titled himself as " Tsar of Russians and Bulgarians". Do not listen to the Pan-Turkish propagandists. There is no direct source of evidence that proves that the proto-Bulgarians were Turkic-speaking people. This is Russian and pan Turkish propaganda. The names of Bulgarian rulers as Kubrat, Asparuh, Kotrag, Kuber, Bayan, Alcek, Telerig, Krum, Kardam are not Turkic. The DNA of proto-Bulgarians is European (Eight proven cases from the 8th century were DNA analyzed). DNA of modern Bulgarians doesn't contain Y-haplogroups Q (Turkish) and C (Mongolian). We considered calling the proto-Bulgarians "Turks" as a national insult. The proto-Bulgarians were the major component of the modern Bulgarians, not the Slavs. Historically, the Bulgarians lost at the point when Kievan Rus's prince Sviatoslav conquered the core regions of the Bulgarian state in the northeastern Balkans in 967-969, seized the Bulgarian tsar Boris II, and effectively ruled the country through him. This was a stab in the back when we are fighting the Byzantines in the south. The "brothers" Russians don't like to talk about this. After that, it took many years for the East Roman Empire to conquer Bulgaria. Up to this point, Bulgaria was handling very well the Byzantine empire which has a seven times bigger population but suffered defeat after defeat. Thanks to the stab in the back by the "brothers" Russians we were conquered by East Roman Empire (wrongly named Byzantine Empire in 16 century). The Byzantines brought corruption to the Bulgarian elite during their 140 years of loose occupation. The corruption was the main reason why we fell under Osmans (Ottoman was a wrong German label). In the 14th century, Bulgaria had the manpower and the military traditions to stop the Turks like what we did to the Arabs in 718 and thus saving Europe from Sharia law.

Just one small thing: while volga tatars are indeed believed to have at least some genetic and linguistic decent from the bulgars their language is classified as part of the Kipchak branch, and so is Bashkir. Chuvash is the only surviving member of the Oghur branch of turkic languages, of which Bulgar and Khazar used to be part of. Volga Tatar and Bashkir are considered to be a mixture of Bulgar and KIpchak, with also some important influences from the surrounding Uralic languages, Arabic, Persian and of course Russian. Thank you for the video anway and good job :)

Masaman, I can understand why you confused the Tatars with the Mongols. My understanding is that Tatar is an umbrella term for Cental Asian people that sometimes included Mongols. By the way, there are also a lot of Crimean Tatars in Turkey who migrated to Turkey even before the Soviets deported them. They integrated really well and mixed with the native population. I guess the problem is after hundreds of years when people become like a mixed genetic soup, it's hard to talk about a "bean" soup or a "barley" soup since more than a dozen ingredients go into the mixture. Anyone who gets a genetic test will understand what I am talking about.

I was absolutely amazed when I took a road trip through the Baltics and Poland to come across old mosques and Tatar muslim communities as well as the Jewish Tatars.. I had no idea. Such an incredible history and rich culture. The costumes are stunning. How sad that most European peoples perception of Islamic peoples is based on a negative Middle Eastern stereotype.
@bub6871

Well the Muslims have been invading and trying to conquer Europe since the 9th century if not longer. Then you have the fact that mongols and Turkic people genocides the people of Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus with the expansion of the mongol empire. But in Russia ethnic conflict is almost non existent, the U.S celebrates their diversity but our diversity is chaotic and violent, Russia is not like that at all.

@@Fakerealestatebiz Im not American but from the UK and my partner is a Central European catholic so I know there is considerable Islamophobia in Europe, pre and especially post 9/11 and also after the Syrian refugee crisis in 2015. Slovakia, Czech, Poland and Hungary will not allow entry to any refugees from Muslim countries. There are huge levels of animosity in Scandinavia, and of course Germany and France struggle with the rise of the far right again purely because of the large numbers of muslim origin immigrants / refugees they have. The Ottomans ruled the whole of the territory of what is was now Yugoslavia , parts of Slovakia, Romania , Bulgaria and yet none of those peoples were forcibly converted to Islam I understand. They were ruled over by the administrators of he Ottomans and many of them were Muslims.Certain peoples - like many Bosnians and Albanians converted to Islam because it gave them advantage over Christians at the the time . Much of it was strategic. Was that not one of the features of both the Mongol and Ottoman empires? --that as long as long as the subjects paid their taxes, and provided men for armies they didnt really care what religion you practiced.. and that included Jews of course -who sheltered in the Islamic world time and time again after they were expelled or persecuted in the Christian world- the notable example being the Sephardic Jews expelled from Spain in 1492. Hence the profusion of churches , mosques and. synagogues in all areas of Ottoman rule. It all changed for the worse during the rise of nationalism in the late 19th and then 20th century and particularly after the 1915-19 Armenian genocide, the Greek and Bulgarian wars of independence and in 1947 finally with the creation of Israel. All very sad in my opinion.

3:46 The first Muslim in the house of Temujin, was Berke of the Golden Horde. After a few generations, Oz Beg Khan converted the Khanate into a Sultanate and most Altaic people converted to Islam. The reason why The Golden Horde is called Tatar is it is an umbrella term for all East Asian Steppe people in Russia. Tatars were actually fierce opponents to the Great Khan, but when they were defeated, the Great Khan culled the leaders and raised the boys as his own tribesmen. Genghis' first born Jochi, who was not very popular due to his questionable origin was given the troublesome Tatars. The Mongol hegemony in Russia had a Tatar dominated hierarchy followed by Kipchak and other Turkic groups. Infact the Golden Horde was the least Mongolic, it was more Turkic. And the fact that the other 3 dynasties of other sons of Temujin Ogedei, Chagatai and Tolui alienated Jochi, manifested upon their descendants further magnifying the gap.

The reason for the mixed DNA and language of today's tatars. Pretty much the same happened to the Volga Bolgars who ended up being Tatars as well. The story is about how mixed and equal are we, especially in Europe and Western Asia and we continue to mix.

This is the video I've been waiting for. Thank you Mason, great work as always. As a half Crimean Tatar (from maternal line) I can confirm the video has adequate information. I would like to make an addition about "Tats", an interesting tribe spread among Crimean Tatars. My grandmother was a Tat. She had Caucasian appearance. She was really tall and had green eyes with no visible epicanthic fold. She spoked Crimean Tatar, Anatolian Turkish and a little bit Romanian (she was born in Dobrudja) My mother says tats are probably of Chechen origin assimilated into Tatar population in the 18th or 19th century. Unfortunately I cannot confirm her claims because I found no information about Tats anywhere.
