The Copa America is the world's oldest international football tournament that is still running, and it is second only to the World Cup and the Euros in terms of viewing figures.
The 2021 Copa America, having been pushed back in 2020, was due to be co-hosted by Colombia and Argentina, but both nation's were stripped of their hosting rights by CONMEBOL, who awarded the finals to Brazil instead, just two weeks before the competition was set to begin.
So in this documentary, HITC Sevens takes a look at the chaos going on in South America right now, why Argentina and Colombia were removed as hosts, why Brazil is such a controversial replacement, and the football war between Brazil boss Tite and the country's president Jair Bolsonaro.

Hey. Brazilian here. Just want to clarify a little bit about our political situation! We have a real problem with the radicalization of the right wing ideologies in our country. Brazil was governed by the Worker's Party ("Partido dos Trabalhadores") for about 14 years. At the start, we had a great time, with economy blooming and reaching a great situation around the year 2009. But after that, we had a serious economical downfall, wich led to a lot of backslash against Dilma, the successor of Lula. After the July 2013 protests, wich was caused by an state of unrrest about the problematic representation in our politics, Dilma was take off charge amid her second mandate. In 2018, Bolsonaro used the insatisfaction of the middle class with the Worker's Party to win the elections. About the representation problem: we don't really have strong ideology bases in the political parties. For starters: Worker's Party is widely accused by the left of having sold out for the enterprises. We don't really have a solid Socialist's Party, with the strongest one ideologically being PSOL, wich never gets many seats. We have PSDB (party of FHC, the president before Lula), wich have Social-Democracy in the name, but is actually a Christian Democracy party. We have a Progressist Party, wich is one of the CONSERVATIVE ones. The Liberal Party is also a strong Conservative one. The Democratic Party ("Democratas") is compose of the political heirs of the 1964~1985 Militar Dictartorship. And there's a lot of other problematic names. As of this moment, President Bolsonaro does not have a party. He was elected with the number of PSL ("Social Liberal Party"), a party wich USED to be left wing, but was took over by politicians that wanted him to go there before the election. The party elected a lot of right wing people with speechs that goes all over: from neoliberals to neofascists (even some that defend death penalty for those who steal, even if it is made by people who steal to eat). But after some fights over control of the party, Bolsonaro and his closest allies (many of wich are his sons) left the party. They then tried to creat a new party, Aliança pelo Brasil (Alliance for Brazil), with a name derived from a slogan used by the militar command of our last dictartorship. It failed. After that, Bolsonaro is making a move to get control of another party, Patriotas (Patriots), a small right-wing party with a lot of conservatives already stablished. In Brazil, as in US, the candidates can get private money to run the campaigns. One of the enterprises that donated money to Bolsonaro campaign was EMS, a farmaceutical company that produces Hydroxycloroquina, the drug that Bolsonaro told brazilian people that we should use to prevent Covid-19. It was then proved that it does not work, but Bolsonaro is stil saying people should take it. He also refused to buy Pfizer Vaccines or to help the production of national vaccines. Pfizer was refused because Bolsonaro wants to keeps the government spending at the minimun, no matter how many lives are lost, because a lot of his faithful electors are liberals. The national vaccine problem is because the major vaccine reasearch company in Brazil actually belong to São Paulo State, wich is governed by Dória, apointed by the media as one of the two major favorites do win next election against Bolsonaro for the presidency. We have now a investigation committee in our congress, wich eventfully became to be run by some major opposition names. This committee suspects that Bolsonaro strategy against Covid was to let people die until herd immunity was reached, trying to reduce the economic impact a lockdown would cause. All because he and his allies think they get a better chance in the election with people dying of Covid then with the economy in a bad shape.
