You hear a lot about the "21 foot rule" or the Tueller Drill" in introductory defensive training, but it's usually a brief summary of Tueller's work.
After a discussion I had last month, I got to thinking how the principle seems to get mis-applied.

This goes back to your video last week: Standards aren’t the same as goals. Principles aren’t the same as rules. Words absolutely matter.

Great points. Most people don’t have a 1 or even 2 second draw to first shot. I think most are in the 3-5 second range. And some take even longer due to an empty chamber which requires a slide rack.

Great content. When some self defense instructors say “always make distance” or “distance is your friend” it is infuriating. Yes those concepts have their place depending on the situation, but some teach it as an absolute rule. Just as you can’t “pick the place or time” of an attack, you can’t always pick the distance or control it initially either.

Exactly. The other guy gets a vote. Anyone with a level of clairvoyance and situational control that allows them to make absolute statements should easily be able to keep a situation from degrading to the point that force is needed at all, right? *sarcasm*

9:28 I actually used to work as a security guard in a homeless shelter, and you would be surprised at the number of things like screwdrivers people were carrying for self defense.

I forget who I heard it from (possibly William Aprill), but essentially the statement was that anyone living in the street is guaranteed to have some kind of edged weapon on them.

The inherent danger lurking in a "rule" lies in a prosecutor's ability to convince 12 ignorant men that 21 feet +1 inch is murder.

That's why relevant training is so important. Ayoob talks about this at length in MAG-20

Also seeing how far 21 feet is important. It is definitely impossible to always keep people that far away.

I've taken Simunitions based Force on Force classes where we played with knife vs, gun at 21 feet. It's interesting to work the problem from both sides, and from the holster vs. hands, and responding to a visual cue - them running at you, vs. a timer. Biggest lesson learned was to become really mindful of how to most efficiently get obstacles between you, or widen that gap, to increase the time you have available to solve the problem....

Funny thing about obstacles - I threw my back out, and am walking around the house using a Ka-Bar cane - which totally freaks out one of my cats. Since walking is good, but I'm barely able to move I'm walking in loops from kitchen to living room - the cat hangs in the living room. As I enter he moves deeper into the room, and as I advance in, he circles around a hassock, halfway, keeping it between me and him - and he reverses direction as I turn and retrace my steps, always keeping the obstacle between us - so, be like a cat in these situations.... 🙂

Tactical rifleman had a 21 foot scenario drill a few years back. They integrated movement and a few different variables. From what I remember, the shooter almost always lost. I agree that it's probably not a useful drill for the average armed citizen. A good draw is important; training to an arbitrary distance is less important.

Exactly. These things get distilled down past the point of usefulness pretty frequently.
