I come from a Jewish Orthodox family and tithing has been a part of our lives since I was a child. From the first cent I made, my parents taught me to tithe. I'm 28 today and it's become second nature to me. I don't even think about it. When my salary comes in, it's the first thing I give, before paying bills or spending on myself. It's taught me to trust G-D like nothing else. I have seen so many blessings and so has my family. My parents always told us that when they started to tithe, they never struggled to make ends meet again. Doesn't mean there weren't hard times, but somehow they always came through. In the bible G-D says that it's one thing he lets us test him- if we give he promises that we will have. I will definitely never stop tithing. It makes me a better person. I agree with Dave.

Thanks for sharing this. I think that tithing is completely optional. However, I personally have seen the effects of my tithing. Back in 2007, I was making about $ 9600 a year with nearly 67000 in student loan debt.During that year, I decided to consistently tithe. I got married only making 30k back in 2010 and still tithed despite my wife and I having a combined $190,000 worth of student loan and credit card debt. I trust God regardless of the obstacles and difficulty that came before me. Now I make $162,000 a year with only a combined student loan debt of 14k, which will paid off next year, and still tithe. With Christ's death, we are no longer commanded to tithe, but the results are amazing. It's kind of like the law of gravity, it works whether you choose to or not. I credit my financial situation to being such a giver.

@@Art_Van_DelayTithing, giving 10%, is still relevant but it’s not under the law, Roman 6:14-15. I still tithe and have for several years now, but it’s more out of love and thankfulness, not fear of God’s wrath. Tithing is not going to buy your way into heaven nor will God love you more if you tithe. Personally, I’ve seen the benefits of tithing, but where I live some preachers use Malachi to encourage people to tithe as a tool for fear. The actually biblical tithing in the Old Testament is closer to 23% of ones increase, not 10% (which most have been taught).

As Christians we believe that Christ came & fulfilled the law. I know some people have a hard time giving during offering at a church because of the abuse of some pastors. I recommend Going to a church that goes out into the community as well as shows its members financial records. Know what you are giving to. Don’t just toss into a bucket. & Personally I don’t believe you have to give to a “church”. Use discernment with wherever you give. I know missionaries who need support as well as created a scholarship for minority female engineers. That’s where my money goes. The Bible calls us to be cheerful givers & to serve. 😁 💕 The church is not just a brick & mortar. We are all the body of Christ and where 2 or 3 gather in His name He is surely with us. We are the church. So give to His people.

I agree with all who say their finances improve when they tithe to their church. We are on a fixed income and give about 7% of what receive to our wonderful church. How will the church operate, teach children, help members and do missions, if members and non-member attendees do not support it? I am working my way up to 10% as my finances improve. Whether God technically commands this in the New Testament or not, it is a false argument to say we no longer need to give, as we are to be cheerful givers to please God and also to support our churches in both the New and Old Testament. Since we began giving, our finances have continually improved and we are happy to serve God in this way. If it is difficult in your budget, start with a small amount say $5, $10 or $20, and increase it over time. You will be glad you did. If you are impoverished, seek help from your church. God Bless you all.

Tithing is an expression of worship to the Lord‼️‼️ He is Lord and King over my finances and wealth to come! It’s always an humbling honor to give both Tithes and offering unto Him🙏🏽 People who do not believe in Tithing are more than likely “poor” within their own psychology of money. With no question seek ye 1st the Kingdom in all that you do! Render unto the Lord what’s the Lord’s. You can NEVER loose when you honor God with your finances with both Tithing & Offering! Giving this offer of worship to the Lord must be with a PURE & JOYUS heart aswell. The Lord be praised for ever and ever! ”But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.“ ‭‭Matthew‬ ‭6‬:‭33‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Theres the tithe and then there's the offering. Its very clear. The tithe is to Gods mission on earth...the offering is the stretch...its from the heart. As believers, we live on 90% of our income the 10% doesnt exsist. Its not our duty to monitor(micro manage) each cent of where the 10% goes...its not ours, trust God. Do research, and then plant your seed in a 'full' gospel church/Outreach/Ministry etc that's doing the work of the Lord in the community and within the body of Christ 💜 Be blessed! theres a promise to you who follows through.

Thank you Dave for highlighting the legalism overkill churches place on giving. I'll admit I need to be much better about more consistency in my giving. But it bothers me when most modern churches try to avoid too much legalism in every area... But then when it comes to tithing all of a sudden they are the most legalistic interpreters. And then say that anything that you want to give outside of the church is the offering. The reality is even though our church resembles the storehouse today the Christian Church looks incredibly different than it did in the Old Testament so to suggest that the two are identical and then superimpose legalism is not appropriate Right now I am not part of a specific Church home so giving sometimes goes elsewhere. That doesn't mean that I'm not being a faithful Giver or tithing wrong, as some churches would say. Yes as a Christian giving to your local church I believe is very important. But if you find yourself in a situation where you have the ability to bless someone with what would otherwise be your tithe that I think that is completely appropriate to do and it is still taking care of and Sheltering for people in need as the church would do.

Just because it's called a _"church"_ doesn't mean it is ordained by the Lord. In Acts chapter 8, a religious cult leader named Simon offered the apostles money, but they turned it down. When collecting money from people is too high of a priority, it creates a conflict of interest for serving the Lord. That's why the Lord said one can't serve both God and Mammon.

God blessed us that we can make the living as we do. Paying taxes comes after making your living (gross income), and your tithing should happen before paying taxes. Tithing after paying taxes (based on net income) is like saying God comes after the government in our priority. Also it is not our income, it all comes from God and tithing is an act of faith, showing that God is our provider.

@obits3
@obits3 5 лет назад
Tithing as a system was only really designed to handle crops, herds, and spoils of war. Those were all based on the gross 10th (not 10%), as in every 10th unit. Crops and spoils of war worked out to be around 10% because the units are numerous. Herds were ever 10th animal to pass under the rod, so less than 10% in practice and 0% if you only has a herd of 9. All three were technically gross measurements, but I would question trying to extend this logic to other business and labor transactions. After all, what about carpenters and fishermen? Did they tithe? If you want to tell me they did, I would ask you to prove it with some type of Biblical reference. If you can’t do that, you have no business telling modern people to give 10% of their wages.

Tithing in the Bible is essentially two things: 1) Giving thanks AFTER you have been rewarded (see Genesis stories about Abraham and Jacob); 2) Historic tax base for Israel instituted in two levels a) crop owners and herders with more than 9 animals (both = random 10th) and b) Local priests giving to the temple in Jerusalem (the best 10th of the random 10th). I’m fairly certain that anything else is just making things up that aren’t in the Bible.

@@barbmelle3136 Before Jesus died and was resurrected, He could hold people and the pharisees accountable to keep the old testament Law. You can't look at Jesus quotes in a specific context while the Mosaic Law is still active and say that means Christians (post-Acts 2) are supposed to follow them. If you found this in the Pauline letters, for example, then it would apply. Jesus quotes while He was on Earth don't necessarily work for that. Jesus also mentions keeping a myriad of other Old Testament laws. By this logic, we have to keep all of them too and might as well be judaizers if you submit tithing for that reason. Commanding Christians to participate in tithing in the New Testament (post-Acts 2) is judaizing. It doesn't belong as a command in Christianity. If people want to do it, fine. @@trebmaster I agree. The context is showing that they were still tithing because the temple and the Levites still existed. So I just did this study today after Church, as I've never tithed but have always given to those around us as God has led. He has always provided for us and we have never been in debt even though I am the sole bread winner, married and we have 5 children. This is the amazing Truth I learned about tithing. (Completely backwards to what I was taught but it leads to a LOT of freedom and generosity and more love for Christ!) Tithes in the Old Testament were specifically given to the priests as their inheritance. 20 The Lord said to Aaron, “You will have no inheritance in their land, nor will you have any share among them; I am your share and your inheritance among the Israelites.21 “I give to the Levites all the tithes in Israel as their inheritance in return for the work they do while serving at the tent of meeting. Numbers 18 So the Levites (the sons of Levi) specifically received 10% for their own personal needs and then they gave 10% to the Aaronic lineage of the Levites who were priests. 26 “Speak to the Levites and say to them: ‘When you receive from the Israelites the tithe I give you as your inheritance, you must present a tenth of that tithe as the Lord’s offering. 27 Your offering will be reckoned to you as grain from the threshing floor or juice from the winepress. 28 In this way you also will present an offering to the Lord from all the tithes you receive from the Israelites. From these tithes you must give the Lord’s portion to Aaron the priest. 29 You must present as the Lord’s portion the best and holiest part of everything given to you.’ Numbers 18 They had to present these offerings and tithes at the place God chose for His Name to dwell. 8 You are not to do as we do here today, everyone doing as they see fit, 9 since you have not yet reached the resting place and the inheritance the Lord your God is giving you. 10 But you will cross the Jordan and settle in the land the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance, and he will give you rest from all your enemies around you so that you will live in safety. 11 Then to the place the Lord your God will choose as a dwelling for his Name-there you are to bring everything I command you: your burnt offerings and sacrifices, your tithes and special gifts, and all the choice possessions you have vowed to the Lord. What Jesus says about the dwelling place of His Name now: 16 Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?17 If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy. For the temple of God is holy, and ye are that temple. 1 Cor. 3 6 Now when these things were thus ordained, the priests went always into the first tabernacle, accomplishing the service to God.7 But into the second went the high priest alone once every year, not without blood, which he offered for himself and for the errors of the people,8 the Holy Ghost by this signifying that the way into the Holiest of All was not yet made manifest so long as the first tabernacle was yet standing.9 It was a figure for the time then present in which were offered both gifts and sacrifices, which could not make him that did the service perfect, as pertaining to the conscience,10 since it concerned only meats and drinks and divers washings and carnal ordinances imposed on them until the time of reformation.11 But Christ, having come a High Priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands (that is to say, not of this building), 12 neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by His own blood, He entered in once into the Holy Place, having obtained eternal redemption for us. Hebrews 9 And they sang a new song, saying, “Thou art worthy to take the book and to open the seals thereof; for Thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by Thy blood, from every kindred and tongue, and people and nation,10 and hast made us unto our God kings and priests; and we shall reign on the earth.”11 And I beheld, and I heard the voice of many angels round about the throne and the living beings and the elders; and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands,12 saying with a loud voice, “Worthy is the Lamb that was slain, to receive power and riches and wisdom and strength, and honor and glory and blessing!” So the purpose of the tithe was to provide for the levites. God was their inheritance and it was His way to provide for them. Now, Who is our inheritance and to whom are we the inheritance? 11 In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will, 12 so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of his glory. Ephesians 1 17 That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him:18 The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,19 And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power, Ephesians 1 Here's the beauty. He is our inheritance. The tithe that Abraham gave to Melchizedek is our inheritance. He is saying that He will provide for us in Christ. There is no longer a law to provide the priests with a tithe because we are the priests! He is the Priest! He is saying that the law of tithing was in place as a shadow of the good things we have in Christ! Though it's not that we had to pay 10% before, but now we need to give God everything (as I thought before). It's saying that we had to pay 10% before, but now we receive everything FROM Him! He is our Inheritance. He will provide. There's absolute freedom with your money in Him! You no longer have an obligation to do anything with it! It's all your money. It's your tithe that He is giving you because you are in Him and He is in you. He gave you the money to provide for you because you are His beloved. He doesn't need anything. He gives to His children, not the other way around. So now, any giving you do is with zero strings attached. You want to give it all because of Him? Awesome! You want to keep it? Great! But let each person be at rest in their actions. Then Peter said, “Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit and have kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land? 4 Didn’t it belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, wasn’t the money at your disposal? What made you think of doing such a thing? You have not lied just to man but to God.” Acts 5 You can give everything away, or nothing and He'll provide for you. It is a much better way to live. Zero debt except to love one another. Don't buy a house, don't buy a car, until He provides it with no strings attached. Save your money until He says where to put it. Minister with an open hand knowing that He is your Inheritance. This type of faith walk is not being lived out by many, but it puts God in the driver's seat and your money where your heart is/should be: His Kingdom.

Differences in the old testament and new testament. God commanded in the old testament to observe tithing (Malachi 3:10), circumcision (Genesis 17:10), sabbath day (Exodus 20:8-11), stoning to death (John 8:1-11). Why some ministries teach the practice of tithing but not circumcision, sabbath day, and stoning to death? Why are they very choosy on what to teach? Why are they not consistent? Is it because only tithing involves money? In the new testament: >Jesus never sent anyone to death. >Jesus heals on the sabbath >Jesus never commanded his disciples to collect the tithes and offerings. >Giving is to the poor (Luke 19:8-9, Mark 10:21, Matthew 26:8-9, Acts 10:4).

A storehouse was a place where the tithes were stored. Not only were biblical tithes always food, but when churches collect tithes they do not store it in the church building, they store it in a bank, making the bank, not the church building, the storehouse. Furthermore, in Malachi 3:6, the LORD says he changes not, how come the biblical tithe changed then? Can someone please give me a scripture that states New Covenant believers are commanded to give a certain amount, and that amount being 10%.

Paul describes the New Testament standard for giving. Invoking Tithing is an expedient method for ministries to finance operations. It just isn't scripturally correct however useful modern day churches may find it. Giving to God is paramount however there is no fixed amount tied to it under the New Testament covenant. Give what you can and be a joyous giver. 2 Corinthians 8:11-15 11 Now you should finish what you started. Let the eagerness you showed in the beginning be matched now by your giving. Give in proportion to what you have. 12 Whatever you give is acceptable if you give it eagerly. And give according to what you have, not what you don’t have. 13 Of course, I don’t mean your giving should make life easy for others and hard for yourselves. I only mean that there should be some equality. 14 Right now you have plenty and can help those who are in need. Later, they will have plenty and can share with you when you need it. In this way, things will be equal.

so for anyone reading this I'm curious. What about if you're 18 and trying to go through college debt free? I've written it all down and it looks like in order for me to pay it off I gotta use everything to my advantage until I finish and post college I can slow down and start tithing and I'm okay with slowing down upgrading my living situation by paying with cash. An apartment will do just fine for a while. Is that morally okay or should I still tithe through college?

I think maybe there was a time that you could give money to almost any Christian church trustingly. But times have changed. Between Catholic church scandals and 501-3C classification making the church vulnerable to preach what is best for government, it's hard to find a really good church that you feel good about giving money to. I think you as a Christian will get the benefits even if you give to a bad church or charity, but you did work hard for the money and want it to go as far as possible to someone who isn't a scammer, & you want the money to be used in the most efficient way.

There's no such thing as a biblical monetary tithe. Also, biblical tithing wasn't giving. It was an ordinance under Mosaic law that only involved items of the land - produce and livestock. As such, it's hard to argue that it involved any faith either. That being said, I love Dave Ramsey and all he and his team does for others. He's just way wrong when it comes to defining biblical tithing. We are free to give, not bound to pay.

I'm committed to paying off debt as quickly as possible, tithing (at 10%) for me would subtract over $550 a month from getting out of debt, that's huge. It may be wrong or right, but we're tithing 10% of disposable income.

Giving money to the poor and needy isn’t a tithe, but it is very much the spirt of the tithe. In historical Israel, the tithe went to the local priests who would often act as the local support of the needy. Further, owners of crops had to keep the exterior boundaries of their crops unharvested so that the poor could eat.

Most definitely, if you see someone in need, you can help them. Tithing is not for today. In the bible, the tithe was food 100 percent of the time, and they had currency, so don't let anyone tell you food was there money. The tithe argument is built on a faulty premise because it's not money in the bible.

In the Old Testament tithing was NEVER money, the poor were not required to tithe, and it's only purpose was to support those that served in the temple. In the New Testament there is absolutely no command or even a hint that tithing or any other law from the Old Testament still applies to believers. Tithing is not required and instead we have free will offerings with no specified amount. In other words, what you give is between you and God. This is not an unorthodox view.

Not even Jesus himself was qualified, accordig to the Mosaic Law, to receive tithes from anyone during his time on earth. When Jesus was on earth the Temple was still intact. Imagine if Jesus had come telling the people to tithe to him and his disciples. As a matter of fact, when Jesus sent out his disciples to preach Jesus specifically told them not to take a purse with them, but into whatever house they entered they were to eat and drink what was put tbefore them. In essence, the ONLY THING that Jesus's disciples could receive from whomever they witnessed to was food and drink. Not only was Jesus not qualified to receive tithings from anyone, there is no record that either Jesus or his disciples did ever received tithing from anyone. So, if Jesus, his disciples, even Paul, never received tithes from the people nor even qualified to receive tithes from the people, HOW IS IT THAT ANYONE WHO CLAIMS TO BE A FOLLOWER OF JESUS TODAY THINKS THAT HE OR SHE SHOULD RECEIVE TITHES FROM ANYONE? The Church was established by the Apostles in Acts chapter 2. The Temple was still intact at the time. No one even considered redirecting tithings from the Temple to the newly established Church. As a matter of fact, it was the "haves" within the newly established Church who provided for the "have nots"within the newly established Church. Guess who didn't have their hands out for a handout. Yep! The Apostles did not have their hands out for a handout. In actuality, the Apostles appointed certain persons from among them to distribute necessities to the needy within the newly Church so that the remaining Apostles/disciples would be freed up to go preach the Gospel (on each's own dime, so to speak). The take home message is that anyone who claims that he is a follower of Jesus Christ and is preaching tithing did not get that message from Jesus, nor the Apostles, and definitely not from God. The question is, who or what rules are these modern day, so-called, christians following when they request, or even demand, tithing from the people? Can you say "the devil"?

The biblical definition of a tithe is a tenth of the food that grew out of the ground. The bible never asked for a tenth of anyone's money. Israel always had money. If God wanted it. The bible would plainly say it. Deuteronomy 14 22 Thou shalt truly tithe all the increase of thy seed, that the field bringeth forth year by year. 23 And thou shalt eat before the LORD thy God, in the place which he shall choose to place his name there, the tithe of thy corn, of thy wine, and of thine oil, and the firstlings of thy herds and of thy flocks; that thou mayest learn to fear the LORD thy God always. 24 And if the way be too long for thee, so that thou art not able to carry it; or if the place be too far from thee, which the LORD thy God shall choose to set his name there, when the LORD thy God hath blessed thee: 25 Then shalt THOU TURN IT INTO MONEY, and bind up the MONEY in thine hand, and shalt go unto the place which the LORD thy God shall choose: ( IF THE TITHE IS SUPPOSED TO BE MONEY, THEN HOW DOES ONE TURN MONEY INTO MONEY?
