@Thomas L There wouldn't be a sudden stop based on how these towers work. It's literally going to stop just as hard as it does as normal. Pressing the e-stop will only stop you from going up. Once you start falling, you're going all the way to the bottom. The same is true for every drop towers I know of except the little hydraulic towers that are about 15 feet tall and made for small children. The magnetic brakes are bolted in place and are permanently engaged.

@Abigail Slaughter No, that's the part that makes the most sense. If you're a young person and you've already fucked up and now you see a broken bodied even younger human in front of you missing their feet from their body, I'd probably expect that person to run away from the sight of that and the guilt of causing that. But what makes no sense is the part before that where they are too ignorant to think to stop it in time.

@Abigail Slaughter maybe the front personnel panicked thinking it was their fault. Thinking that maybe they didn't call to the operator in time, or maybe they hit the wrong button / channel. Regardless an awful traumatic experience for all involved

I worked at six flags mm on Lex Luther drop of doom similar to this ride. There are lazy good for nothings but they don’t last long at all to make it to operating panel. At mm anyway, it was extremely rare for anyone to be completely careless like this girl was. I took pride in doing my best every day to be extremely aware and do my job to the best of my ability while helping people to have a safe fun day. What I kind of gather though is that a lot of other six flags parks that are smaller or crappier don’t have very good operations or care about what they do.

Some advice for children or teens entering the work force: It is ALWAYS ok to hit an E-STOP, even if you are confused and unsure. Actually, especially if you are confused or unsure, you need to push it. Nobody gets in trouble for hitting e-stops, unless you just continually do it for no reason.

@jong2991
@jong2991 2 года назад
@@rylinmarie8667 a rider tried to get off the coaster as it was going up the lift, the loader/dispatch saw it and hit the button. there’s two estop buttons on either side of the platform one in the control booth and one on the opposite side for dispatch. For our coaster dispatch is right next to the lift and can see everything unobstructed while control is in a booth farther away and not only did they not see the person trying to get off they’re focused on the other train coming into the station. Control should have been the one to stop it because unlike dispatch who only has an estop and a train arrival/departure button, control has a lift stop button. The biggest difference between the two is control can restart the lift by themselves if they stop it, but an estop needs maintenance to unlock it and management is alerted. Managers didn’t consider the passenger trying to get off a moving coaster on the lift an emergency stop, so pressing the estop with no emergency is a fat violation and the dispatch person was fired.

That's the scary thing about e-stops. You can trap a person in a machine and by the time powers is restored and they are finally removed it is too late. Say someone is caught in a press, instead of hitting the reverse button you panicked and hit the button that shuts everything down, and now you can't reverse it off of them. The guilt of hitting the e-stop and having it make things worse would be immense. I hope to never have to make that split second judgement call.

I worked at Ky Kingdom from 1999-2001 when I was around 16 y/o. It's insane to me that I wasn't even legally able to drive a car alone but they allowed me to work these rides. This video describes how the operator failed to press the E-Stop but they never mention how we were yelled at and threatened never to press the button. The maintenance dept was lazy and hated to reset the ride. This entire situation is heartbreaking and I still feel terrible for the victim.

The report of the cable around the girl's neck comes from the accident/injury report the girl gave in the hospital. Although it cannot be corroborated, I tend to take what victims report as somewhat reliable especially since the report was taken relatively soon after the incident and before the administration of heavy pain meds. Sad to note that only one of her feet could be reattached.
@Amoreyna
@Amoreyna 3 года назад
You probably shouldn't. Having not only helped people directly in the aftermath of trauma but also having been hit by a frigging semi-truck on a Wyomming freeway, your brain isn't working right after trauma. What you remember and what actually happened are often a bunch of jangled images and you are also more vunerable to making false statements depending on what is being asked of you. There would be physical evidence of what she claimed in this case. Just the logistics of it don't seem all that plausible (i.e. it wrapped around her neck and her ankles), or other statements by her that it was around the necks of the other girls in the car (again, not all that logistically possible). Just that fact that it caught her legs the way it did was amazingly freakish enough all on it's own. That doesn't mean she didn't go through hell or is intentionally lying - it's an effect of the trauma itself. That fact that it cannot be corroborated by physical injuries (which should be there given the circumstances) should be enough to make one pause. Just because heavy pain drugs hadn't been given in the hospital doesn't suddenly wipe away the very real effect of just plain shock, extreme pain, massive blood loss, or any medication given to her on her way to the hopsital.

*This story has haunted me for years.* When I was 14, I rode this ride two weeks before the accident. _There was clearly something wrong with the ride then._ I remember the ride slowly ascending a few feet, and stopping. Then, an operator went back to the control panel and either hit a button or turned a key? (My memory is flawed) But it lurched forward again and I remember feeling uneasy as I heard a loud high-pitched squeak of friction. It continued to groan as we ascended. It was my first drop ride and I was a kid, so I trusted this was perhaps a normal occurrence. And forgot about it afterwards. After the accident, I remembered everything and felt sick.

I had a few family members work at a local amusement park in their teens/20s. One of the policies of the park was to NEVER hit ESTOP or call emergency line under any circumstance unless absolutely sure there is a reason. If used/called and there was no reason, its immediate firing, no second chance. It would make it terrifying to work controls like this. Especially a first job employee, scared shitless about losing their job if they hit estop without warrant. Had someone tell me they worked in a shop at the park and a customer came in saying someone passed out on the ground and they hesitated to call emergency because of the park policy. It was a clear emergency but still.

I worked as a ride operator on this ride when it was still Hellevator. I rode it at the beginning of my shift every day I worked at Kentucky Kingdom. I can't believe anyone would not have hit the emergency stop immediately after seeing a cable snap! We had to constantly call maintenance for that ride, and they were always slow! I cringe just thinking about the mismanagement that led to that horrific injury! Thinking back, I am astonished by how little training I received.

Six Flags is a huge stain on Kentucky Kingdom's history. They bought the park when they had too many parks to manage and they let it fall into disrepair. Then they cannibalized the park and bailed. It's back open again under new management.

I like the rule you have at your ride operating park, it sounds like if you have a plausible assessment of danger, even if just a noise, either you were right, or you were wrong, but still did the right thing by ensuring the safety of the riders. The riders may be upset, a lot will understand, and management, inspectors, and park owners would much prefer the occasional false alarm over injury/death (so long as it isn't a normal occurrence, crying wolf many times)

Ride should have been shut down years before this, back when it was called hellavator, they were having problems way back, I dont remember much but my mom was a mess due to her incident, her harness failed on the fall, only thing that saved her was the fact the ride has the electric harness and a belt/clip harness, the clip is the only thing that kept her on the ride. All I remember was the ride operator (or operators?) laughing at my mom as she was shaking, hyperventilating, and in absolute sobs, and then we went to service desk area (I think, all I remember is we went to a windowed desk area) and my mom was trying to tell the lady behind the window what happened but due to the hyperventilating and sobs the lady waved my mom away and ignored her.....all I know is when the story came out my mom was pissed and stated the ride should have been closed long ago after her experience but because they wouldnt listen to her what happened was never reported. Even as a kid I didnt fully understand why my moms hands were shaking or why we never went back except after the reopening or on a paid for by a school/church group and she stays away from all rides and only spends her time in the lazy river.

At Six Flags New Orleans my mother and I got on this ride called Catwoman's Whip and our section malfunctioned. It spun in circles at an extreme velocity compared to other segments. It made us nauseous and hurt our necks. When the ride stopped, our harnesses didn't raise up. I threw up on myself repeatedly from a mix of dizziness and concussion. The operators said "we can reboot the ride to get them off, so be happy you're getting a free extra ride!" That was the only time in my life I heard my mom physically threaten someone. They balked at her request to not start up the ride again and called in maintenance that used some kind of Jaws of life contraption to pry us out of the harnesses. I didn't have to go to the hospital, thankfully. We tried to form a class action lawsuit because apparently this ride had this happen multiple times with injuries, but it didn't go through because Hurricane Katrina hit and demolished the park. Karma.

Thanks for sharing this. It confirms what I fear from the smaller, traveling parks that set up and leave a few weeks later. Poorly maintained rides or operators lead to incompetent decisions - and you are putting your lives into their hands. It does not mean the bigger parks are immune to this, but it sure makes it less likely that you will see an accident of this type happening. There is a reason Six Flags does not do as well as Disney/Universal/Sea World/Busch Gardens and things like this don't help their cause.
