I've never been happy with an explanation for the cabin circumstances until now!! Gary setting up jack and ted to survive and then going off for helps 100% makes the most sense and is corroborated by the can opener detail that one can was opened by a military opener and all the rest a standard one, lining up with Gary staying for a meal and before leaving them behind!!

Missing enigma did a good job with the cabin part as well. I honestly believe that Gary was not involved as many people want to believe mostly cause why would he and the fact that he wasn’t arrested for misdemeanour or wasn’t found prior after the fact showed that he probably died in the woods.
@glamdolly30
@glamdolly30 7 месяцев назад
@@victory8928 I agree, Gary Mathias died of exposure like the others, and it's not at all surprising his remains weren't found in that wild environment. It's very sad that conspiracy theorists have cruelly trashed his reputation, based on his schizophrenia. The poor guy was victim of a tragic set of circumstances that ended his life brutally. I believe from the evidence Gary ended up in that survival trailer with a frostbitten and very sick Ted Weiher, and did his very best to take care of him. This must have been particularly horrendous for Gary, as withdrawal from his schizophrenia meds kicked in. Gary Mathias has living relatives who sometimes view and comment on 'Yuba Five' videos. They are deeply hurt at speculation that their beloved relative murdered his friends. I wish people would think about the effect their unproven accusations could have - these young men are deceased but they were real people, and they have living relatives and friends who mourn them to this day. Branding their lost loved one a serial killer - based on zero evidence - is shabby and ridiculous.

As a case manager for individuals with disabilities (including some co-morbidities such as mental illness and intellectual disabilities), I just want to point out that many people with disabilities have a very rigid set of black and white rules. My thought on the trailer and all the resources they didn’t use is that the boys that made it there were aware that the food was Not Theirs (along with everything else there), and worried that someone would be upset with them eating the food or otherwise using the other resources there. They (most likely Gary) may have been able to rationalize that this is an Emergency and they need to use some of the resources in and including the trailer, but couldn’t get over the fear/guilt/shame/etc of taking Someone Else’s Belongings for themselves.

I'm surprised people expect someone with schizophrenia (even medicated) or intellectual disability to have the same thoughts and act in the same perfectly "rational" way as they would. I'm no expert on mental illness or mental disability so I just figure I can't work out what they were thinking but it's probably different than what I would think.

Kind of agree,but not sure they would freeze or starve just to avoid someone potentially being mad at them or not breaking the rules. My wild guess is that they decided to sleep in the car with the engine running in the snow…,and got carbon monoxide poisoning. My dad had this happen while sitting in a car with a girl on a date, and when he got out,,,,he noted he could barely walk. And people who have survived carbon monoxide poisoning may have short term memory impairment, where they can’t remember what happened 10 minutes prior. That degree of impairment may have made it hard to use the food and heater.

I only have autism, not any intellectual disabilities, but I can fully understand that kinda thinking I experience something kinda similar, where if there’s no food that I like (or at least tolerate), whether it’s because of texture, taste, etc, I simply will not eat until there IS food I’ll eat, so I can fully see that kind of “if it’s not mine it’s bad to use it, someone will be mad at me” mixed with “food I don’t tolerate is the same as no food” causing someone to just not eat freely accessible food to the point of starvation

I didnt realize they were in the area between Brownsville and Forbestown. It now makes a lot more sense that they got stuck, tried to walk, and got lost. The short distance between places in that area are very decieving because it is very hilly with thick woods and limited landmarks or signs to orient yourself. If you dont already know where the roads and turns are to get to your destination, you will get lost. The map makes it look like there is a big main road from town to town, but it is more like tons of little unmarked country roads and the map is just highlighting which little road will go to the next town. I have been lost there going from Dobbins to Forbestown to see my family.

I was a cadet for a couple years and we did field training exercises every year, sometimes twice a year. My worst MRE was the Chicken chowder. The worst one I’ve ever tried was the Vegetarian one. The story behind my experience with the vegetarian MRE was that I got to speaking to a fellow cadet who was a vegetarian and I asked how the vegetarian MRE tasted. Their response was, “It’s so bad, I wish I never told anyone I was a vegan.” Of course I couldn’t believe anything was that bad and they offered for me to try it myself. The cadet was right.

I've seen other people immediately blame Gary because of his mental health, but I've always thought it was very unlikely that he intentionally hurt his friends. I think it's highly possible that the red pickup truck was real, forced them up the mountain (albeit slowly), they got stuck behind the other guy's car, and then the boys ran. The car being unlocked with the window rolled down seems to suggest this. Maybe the pickup truck even just abandoned them right there once they saw that the other car was stuck and blocking the way. Whoever was driving the pickup might have thought "it's not worth the risk" and simply left. The boys would have probably thought they were still being chased. Gary would have helped them until his lack of medicine began to take a toll, at which point he may have gone for help or tried to get away out of fear of hurting his friends. I think the amount of provisions left behind suggests he went for help. As for the guy having a heart attack, the first time I heard the story my immediate thought was that he must have been doing something illegal that he didn't want to get in trouble for, so he said he had a heart attack. All the throwing up and defecating he claimed to experience could have been from alcohol or drugs. Maybe he had a secret stash on the mountain that he wanted to hide before his family got there. Could have been anything. Either way, he was probably extremely out of it or unwilling to help the boys because he didn't want to get caught doing whatever he was doing. Might have even pretended to be asleep when the flashlight was shined in his car. As for his very ominous quote, maybe that was referring to whatever he was doing on the mountain. I really doubt he was saying he killed the boys or anything like that. He could have literally meant "I wish I'd walked back down the mountain a long time ago" instead of freezing in his car for hours. So who was driving the pickup and why did they chase the boys? Someone else in the comments suggested that the boys were followed from the game they had just been at. I think that's a possibility. Maybe they had angered someone there, or maybe someone didn't want them to participate in their upcoming basketball game. Since Gary was part of the Gateway Project, despite not actually being intellectually disabled, it seems like anyone with any mental issues could have been included. Potentially very dangerous ones that may or may not have been being treated.
@ViewingChaos
@ViewingChaos 8 месяцев назад
I think your theory is the one that fits the best. They might have taken the wrong route once they realised the red pick-up was following to try and loose them? The slow trip up the mountains could have been a combination of refusing to stop for the red pickup truck and concern for the car. Too fast for the driver to walk up to them, but too slow to loose them. The guys ran when they got the chance and the road was blocked by the stuck car. Two perished from exposure running away (from either trying to return to the car/getting seperated from the others) The cabin situation plays out as explained in the video, with the final guy's medication running out and the (likely valid) paranoia/memory of the red pick up truck driver leading him to either perish deep in the woods or make it back to civilisation with no intention of ever revealing who he was. As for the gold watch in the cabin none of them supposedly owned? Might have been either stolen or taken by accident and that led the pick up to follow them, if the dispute wasn't about the basketball game
@mason7067
@mason7067 8 месяцев назад
Schizophrenia, in its worst cases, causes one to completely lose their grip on reality. It doesn't matter how much Gary cared for the boys. In fact if he had a break and was convinced that streetlights were evil cameras they needed to avoid them he would have believed he was helping them by convincing them to go into the woods. It's a simple explanation that covers all the details without foul play or anything supernatural being involved.
@CJM-rg5rt
@CJM-rg5rt 3 месяца назад
This is precisely how I saw it, this video cleared up a whole bunch of things and I came to the same conclusions. They just went for help where there unfortunately wasn't any and were too frostbitten to return, they made that journey with very little clothing. What he didn't mention in the video is that their workshop (and even main office) had been firebombed multiple times, they moved and immediately got threats and then the director of Gateway was found by the fire department burning just inside of his apartment because someone knocked, threw gasoline on him and lit him up. Some evil murderer WAS legitimately after them.

As a perfectly functional 20ish adult, I was coming home one dark, rainy night from a family members home. It was a 20 min trip, and I'd done it many times. I totally spaced, and missed a turn, so I took the next one incorrectly remembering that it would join up to the road I wanted. An hour later I was still driving down random narrowing streets which rapidly became unpaved, having no idea where I was, being pelted by branches coming out of the trees from the strong winds, and panicking because I could not find any turn around spots. Eventually, I just stopped in the middle of the road and grabbed my old school Tom Tom to tell me how to get home. Had a cell phone but never thought to use it (prob wouldn't have been helpful because I had no idea where I was, so neither would anyone I called). It can happen. Who knows how I would have gotten home if I didn't have a GPS. I probably would have had to wait until morning and some light to figure it out where I was.

The only thing I've heard that you didn't mention and that may support Gary having stayed behind in the trailer for some time was that there was a book or magazine in the trailer in which affirmations were written, supposedly by Gary. This would indicate that he was in the trailer long enough for his meds to begin wearing off and he was doing his best to maintain stability in order to care for his friend. I wonder if perhaps the two found together also made it to the trailer and were the first to set out, leaving Gary (the most capable) to care for the fourth. The one found alone I suspect succumbed to hypothermia on the way up the mountain. All conjecture of course but this is the scenario that seems most likely to me. Great breakdown, though.

Old comment, but just to weigh in: These affirmations are almost certainly a fabrication of "journalism". The police never mentioned finding anything like this at the trailer, and any evidence lists which have gone public do not include anything resembling hand-written affirmations. I agree. At most he may have had some negative interaction with someone at the game, store, or with Shone. The last most likely in my opinion. But that could be said for any of them. No evidence but I feel like they did run into an inebriated Shone somewhere leading to Madruga was wounded at the car. Then panic north. Shone reacted to the events with a heart attack then becoming ill. A lot of the how of it all depends what state Shone was in that night.

I’m actually covering this case and its theories for my high school forensics class right now. What drew me to cover this case is to disprove to the best of my ability the common stance that Mathias was a perpetrator, not a victim. I’d appreciate if you’d be willing to share any sources or what you did to discover any contemporary reporting. I am especially looking for information about after the boys got onto the mountain. The details you found regarding Madruga’s keys, the sea rations, Schons’ time in the lodge and many other smaller details would be great to have contemporary sources for. I think that you made a great case using all of the evidence you’ve found for all the boys but primarily Mathias and his likely innocence. I’d appreciate any sources you can point me towards as I want to portray this case as thoroughly as you did.

C-rations, and if you're doing it for school, I'd humbly like to suggest you have a look at my comment. I've probably forgot parts to address, but I tried to cover all the theories. My personal hunch, summarized, is that they were in the mountains because of the ex of Gary's sister. He had it out for her family. They found bullet casings in the car, while none of the boys had a gun. I think the five of them died from natural causes, but at different times, except for the two that initially went back for the car. There's a lot more detail in the other comment. Hi Aiden, I’m not believing Shone’s story for a minute. Whatever he should have done 2 years ago, it sounds like he did something wrong. Also, he just ordered a beer, not an ambulance for a heart attack. And, how did he get his stuck car off the mountain? If the boys believed that they were in danger, they would have tried to get away. I think they tried to stay together, but when 2 of them couldn’t go on, their instinct drove them on. Gary broke the window and they climbed in. They wouldn’t want to steal, so I can actually see them not using the supplies in the trailer. After a few days, Gary left, presumably to get help, but died in the snow. My heart goes out to the families of those guys. I’m sorry for the pain that not knowing what happened had to cause. I really wish the authorities had investigated Shone a little better. I’m convinced he had knowingly lied about the incident. ❤

The only thing I think you could be overlooking is that you assume being chased by car means they were going fast. They could have been slowly followed and after finally being caught between their pursuers and the other guys car, just out and made a run for it.

I'm not sure this has been talked about in the comments already but there was some information that popped up recently that is super interesting. Instead of going into, i'll just post it directly from a reddit post that is talking about a mopac audio podcast. I've listened to the podcast, they discussed it a little bit. I have never seen a picture of the memo tho. After reading about it.. the implication is that the police have details that they have not released. If I remember correctly, mopac audio interviewed family members. Some of yuba county five's parents are still alive. Quote below: At the end of the podcast Yuba County Five, by Mopac Audio, she reveals that their team was one of the first to get a full digitalized copy of the case from the police. As they were going through it, they found an internalized memo from the Sherriff from October 8, 2020 that said “Gary Matthias is believed to be a victim of foul play. This case remains open as a missing person/homicide case. It is in the best interest of all involved that this letter not be forwarded to the Matthias family.”

This case has fascinated me since I first heard about it. I believe it might have been the first Missing Enigma I ever saw, and I immediately thought "I hope Aidan and Wendigoon cover this eventually." Now you both have, so the trifecta is complete. This is one case I definitely wish I could live to see solved but at this point unless Gary Mathias is somehow alive and willing/able to come forward, we'll never truly know why it went the way it did. I don't know what sort of afterlife there is, if any, but if there is any I hope the families are all reunited and any surviving family members are at peace.

I think you came the closest with the idea of being chased. Never doubt the lengths a (possibly drunk) bully will go to because of a perceived insult. Especially in the presence of a friend or two. The generations today don't understand what no cell phone, no gps, no help look like, when you're being tailgated because of 'X' insult on the road. Now imagine the panic that would have occured in the car if several differently-abiled members of the group saw flashing, swerving lights at eye level, and loud honking coming right behind them and they didn't understand why or what this person wanted. What's the most likely thing that would occur? I think this is the single most likely occurrence. (And anyone who thinks, "Well, certainly the motorists would have called the police, or have reported seeing someone on the highway acting like a complete ass to another car!" has clearly never driven in 1978 when the legal drinking age was 18 [CA upping the age to 21 later that year in the very tail-end of Dec] and a call to the police meant finding a familiar exit, knowing where the gas station was and getting out of your car to use a payphone.)

I think the 'heart attack' guy had a lot more to do with this incident than people realise. It is pretty clear that the various later 'sightings' of these young men in the area were completely erroneous. They were up that mountain and would have been much better off staying with their car. But clearly something really frightened them, and made them run further up the mountain. I suspect 'heart attack' guy for causing this, his testimony constantly changed. Did he pull a gun on them? They left a window down - they ran away.

The keys being in his pocket is pretty definitive imo, without any family/friends saying he had a second pair of keys it seems like the guys quickly left their vehicle. It seems more likely that they got lucky with the road while driving up it quickly. I wonder if there was an unreported road rage incident with Shon (?) who was chased up the mountain by the boys. Maybe it caused his heart attack, the boys ran off when Shon got out of the car and was ill or maybe he got out with a shotgun, and just lied about his story to protect himself. Also "I should have done this two years ago" could mean anything, could even be an exaggeration about how he should have walked down the mountain earlier. The red pickup truck also could have been anything, another issue. So it seems best to look at the forensic data. It makes sense that Gary left the trailer shortly after arriving, orherwise the heat etc would have been used.

It would be kind of dumb, but if they were carjacked, he might have grabbed the keys back when they had the moment to jump out. Ultimately unlikely since there's no real reason to take the keys. Teds feet’s were in such bad condition he couldn’t survive on his own and eventually died from the injuries inside the trailer. So what condition were Gary’s feet in? Did the sneakers work better that night on the way to the trailer? And if so, then why choose to leave the sneakers behind and take Teds boots with him? How in the hell did Gary walk away from that trailer never to be seen again! Mind boggling!

I live like 30 mins away from Yuba County. This case freaks me out.

what also seems odd is who could be threatening enough to cause 5 grown men to flee, including 2 with military training?

From one historian to another, I must say I really appreciate and enjoy your refreshingly innovative and brilliantly conceived multi-perspective, interdisciplinary approach to hIstorical surveying and analysis. Your impressive catalogue of knowledge draws from a widely diverse range of disciplines and epistemologies, thereby demonstrating a genuine passion and respect for the rich, dynamic and multi-textured nature of history - a rare and all too often absent quality in most standard contemporary (and traditional) readings of history. This, in addition to to your inviting, comfortable demeanor and seemingly effortless recounting of facts is partly what separates you from perhaps most other historians I've worked with or observed throughout my 40+ year career as an historian of Black Diasporic Studies and Antebellum Southern history. You seem to possess a remarkably sophisticated and advanced understanding and appreciation of history, and you will no doubt go on to achieve great heights and success in your chosen fields of study and research. I am so happy to have recently discovered your program and eagerly look forward to your next episode. 😊

@@TheLoreLodgeseriously though I’ve always wondered how you look right at the camera lens and can shoot off so much info/names/locations/dates/EVERYTHING without a script! I know you have your notes off to the side, but what’s your secret? Normal to have a bunch of camera takes and that could be it but do you memorize? -Random question from a fan who does video so have been wondering this. ❤

I think about this case at least once a week. That's not an exaggeration. I was very excited to see a video on it from this channel. This was the perfect balance of objective analysis I was looking for against the (equally valid) more artistic and heartstring-pulling ones from Enigma and Nexpo. Thanks for helping to keep the Yuba County Five's memory alive and relevant today.

While I like getting scared occasionally by watching your videos, I'd perfer it not to be by an otherwise normal ad because I've had to crank the volume up so high to hear you. I love you guys. Like I really LOVE you guys. I've watched litterally everything you have created (except for maybe a few streams). But can you *please* do something to keep the volume more consistent. This one is exceptionally quiet!

that one story I have about getting lost in the woods does kinda fit this theme, but as far as I know I survived it. So glad that the history segment returned this week

I always love hearing Lore Lodge's take on a story I already know, and this episode did not disappoint. Can you guys do an episode on Maura Murray some day? That case would fit right in with the "police didn't feel like doing their job" theme you have going on 😂
@xeldinn86
@xeldinn86 8 месяцев назад
No. Its been discussed to death. I dont know what is so fascinating about a drunk girl who got lost in the woods and died hiding from police

All of these stories have been "discussed to death" and you could dismiss many of them as someone being drunk and accidentally dying. But here we are anyway, consuming content about their cases because obviously they aren't that straightforward. In Maura's case her body has never been found, and the more coverage it gets the better chance that her family may one day get closure. If Lore Lodge does an episode you can just skip it 🤷🏻‍♀️

I just loved everything about this video. Yes, it is well-researched on a deeply interesting subject of mystery; but, I enjoyed hearing you reference local place names and was ridiculously entertained by your parody of a manly man in a chair ad. Thank you!

I’m a local to Nor Cal and it’s interesting to see people talk about crazy things from basically next door. I know you guys cover specific topics and cases, but one you could talk about is the Keddie cabin murders from a resort outside Quincy. Similar area and also a mystery as far as I’m aware. Pretty strange case that I never fully understood. Love the vids! ❤❤❤
