It probably happened aswell. Not every dinosaur was killed after the asteroid impact, though volcanic changes and toxic air is the most probable cause, as it was the same cause of mass extinction that happened prior. The previous one before the dinosaurs even ended 90% of existing life, both on land and water, while the mass extinction destroying the dinosaurs spared more aquatic life this time around.

Dinosaurs probably had lighter stronger bird like bones which enables flight in birds as well as larger animals, they may have had bird like more efficient lungs enabling flight in birds and larger animals, it’s also possible that they had bird like tighter smaller neurones leading to highly intelligent birds and perhaps some dinosaurs were smart despite their seemingly small brain cases. All this suggests to me that perhaps dinosaurs evolved from a flying creature then back to birds. The big advantage of mammals though is their live birth trump card which may have made the difference to who inherited the Earth post apocalypse.
