Well quite a bit, as it turns out. But for how much longer, before another, lucrative development that we don't need, is built on top of it? So whilst out walking the dog, I decided to have a look round and record what I found, before it all goes. Home to Stirling and later, Lancaster and Mosquito Pathfinders, this was a massive undertaking and was in use from 1942 to 1946, with the sole purpose of defeating Germany in WW II. 2000 personnel, were housed in dispersed blocks, South of the main airfield. The three concrete runways were formed with gravel from Tottenhill quarry, then after the war, the runways were dug up for hardcore for the A 10, Downham Market by-pass. A FIDO installation for the main runway was supplied from a depot which is now a Volvo dealer.
The last remaining piece of runway and panhandle dispersal, plus a piece of taxiway, were dug up for hardcore in Sept 2016. The UHFP has lost part of its walls in early 2020.
Several types of aircraft have operated out of Downham Market, among these:
Short Stirling
Avro Lancaster
de Havilland Mosquito
Airspeed Horsa
Based units
No. 214 Squadron RAF
No. 218 Squadron RAF
No. 571 Squadron RAF
No. 608 Squadron RAF
No. 623 Squadron RAF
No. 635 Squadron RAF
No. 14 Heavy Glider Maintenance Section
No. 274 Maintenance Unit RAF
No. 2722 Squadron RAF Regiment
Mosquito Conversion Unit

My father's second cousin was shot down over Essen, flying from RAF Downham Market with 218 Sqn. flying as a Wireless Operator in a Stirling a/c on 5 March 1943. RIP. Thanks for upload

Used to go past this old base most Fridays in the late 70's going home from Downham rail station when I stationed at Marham up the road. Seems so long ago now. Lovely vid , thanks

During the early 50s and 60s, I grew up a few hundred yards from the Western side of the airfield . Spent countless hours with my cousins and friends exploring these buildings.

I just want to say thank you for this amazing video. My Uncle Harry Farrington was stationed at Downham Market. His short Sterling BK 716 has been found in Lake Markermeer in the Netherlands and recovered with all crew still in it. Their official funeral is set for Sept. 28, 2022 in the Netherlands.

Thanks for bringing this airfield to life with that link to the past. We walk our dog here and it's impossible not to feel the presence of the thousands of people that lived and worked, during its short life. I've seen the photo of your Uncle and it's strange to think that we have, almost certainly, both walked through the same buildings shown in the video, but eighty years apart. Regards RT..

@@RoryTrackrod I am hoping one day to walk in his shoes. Through my mother I feel like I have always known him. The crews official burial is the end of Sept. sadly my 96 year old mother cannot make it as she is in hospital but I see the peace it brings her to finally know where her brother is.

Hello Fiona. Do you know if your uncle was in 623 squadron? My father was based in Downham Market and was shot down in a short Sterling. He spent two years as a POW in Germany.

@@eddysmythe708 Hi Eddy, The plane was the BK716 not sure about the squadron was but the funeral just took place on September 28th in Nijmegen Netherlands at Jonkerbos cemetery. It was quite an honour to see. 4 of the pall bearers also carried the Queen just weeks before.

@@fionataylor-williams6425 Hi Fiona. Thank you so much for your reply. I noted that the funeral happened only recently. What an honour to have 4 of the pall bearers from the Queen's funeral. I would have loved to have witnessed it. It is so important to keep the memory of the brave men and women who gave everything for their countries and for freedom. I have been invited to visit the memorial for the POW camp my dad was in, in Germany next month. I have done some research on your uncles squadron and he was in 218 squadron which formed with 623 squadron (my father's).

Its sad to see all of these enigmatic airfield fading away considering what they stood for. I live in Devon and we sadly dont have the extreme density of WW2 airfilelds down here like Norfolk and Lincs. I have driven past Downham quite a few times on my way to Kings Lynn on business.

So sad to these buildings lost to nature , If I owned area I would have cleaned that area up as a memorial to all who flew from that airfield

Very interesting but I`ve no doubt that the last remaining bits will be wiped from the face of the earth before much longer. Sorry but 62 years has made me very cynical. Great video, glad you did what you did when you did it.

Two pilots were awarded the VC flying from this airfield. Many others failed to return. Poignant to think that this was the last part of their "home" country they stood on.

My parents were both based at RAF MARHAM 1945 onwards and I was Born 1st December 1946 at Stow Bardolph Vicarage and when my younger brother and I were teenagers Dad took us on Marham areodrome and taught us how to drive!!. My parents settled briefly at Stone Cross after living above my Father's Photographic Business the shop now a Florist 23 Bridge Street Downham, then we moved into Priory Road and Dad bought the Chalet next to the Fire Station. He was a Photographer during the War over Germany and in India. Mum worked as a Professional Dress Maker Bradley Trained in London and therefore Repaired their Uniforms in the W.A.F they were married in London in 1944 and my older brother Alan was born there with the Doodle Bugs going over 16 March 1945 I believe.

Hello Janet, I read your post with interest; that being said I found it odd that you did not mention Herbert Soehnle who first worked at Walmsley and Webb Photographic and later bought the business and ran it himself until his retirement; Herbert was a professional and a very talented photographer as well as being a good business man; Herbert would bend over backwards in order to acquire for one the goods that were ordered from him and he did so for myself many times and obtained for me all the photographic accessories that I did order from him; he also did offer me help and advice on photographic matters, I being a schoolboy at the time I first used his shop.

I think it is very sad that the removed the renaining runway there should always be some left for those who Died in the War having flew out from RAF Marham. I will always respect Marham I live in Heacham now but would prefer to live in Downham it has many memories for me and Marham is the reason I am Norfolk Born and bred. God Bless you for making this film and giving some History Thank you

@@janetwalmsley-heron Thanks for your reply. The runways were dug up to supply base for the A10 road and I'm guessing this last piece was used for the contractors site offices and equipement, which is why it survived so long. The land owner is obviously not interested in the historical significance and rendered it into a pile of hard core on the south side of the airfield, shortly after I made this video. Regards..
