❓🤔❓ You reminded me of a strange phenomenon I'd forgotten about. It involved Genesis members separately, but simultaneously infusing "monkeys" into their songs. You had Peter Gabriel's "Shock the Monkey", then you had Phil Collins singing, "I'm coming down, coming down like a monkey"(whatever that means), in the song " Tonight, Tonight, Tonight.
He didnt remember the name but the lyrics stuck in his head ! Thats what a good song does ! I love that one too . I wanted to see the young man with my own eyes that was saying that!
More like he knows that a lot of rock and roll music has zero substance, whereas artists like Neil Young and Roger Waters himself actually have something to say with their music.
@@Nick-qf7vt of course lyrics matter you bellend, Roger waters can play about 10 instruments more than EVH ffs and EVH hasn't made anything remotely as good as dark side of the moon or the wall .
@@Nick-qf7vt idk music doesn’t matter I can’t stand instrumental guitar solos like EVH not to take away from his musical genius. I just didn’t like the mainstream 80’s style of rock n roll. But I like the singer songwriters like Dylan and Young. Also like a Johnny cash type of person. When they make a song it could be a complete throwaway but it still has something about it that just is a step above all the noise in their music to me. It’s all about personal taste and what you like. But EVH was just a guitar player(not average) just didn’t really grab my attention listening to Vanhalen at all just. I didn’t really care for an hair metal besides like GNR and that was only for songs like My Michelle. Not saying any of it isn’t good music just not my taste.
@@Axe-Handle-Hound-1100That’s not what sweet home was about . Neil and Skynard liked each other it was all taken with a grain of salt . They loved each others music
@@williamrehl6520 Sure. But I meant it more in the sense that it was an answer song to Neil Young's "Alabama" or maybe it was "Southern Man." I must be mistaken in my judgement.
I suppose Roger Waters would also like this Neil Young tune: "A dreamer of pictures, I run in the night You see us together, chasing the moonlight My Chimpanzee Girl"
Yup. "He came dancing across the water. With his galleons and guns. Looking for the new world. That palace in the sun." There's a lot of music and not a lot of time to enjoy it. Neil Young is the only guy I make time for a 5 minute instrumental intro before he even sings a word ..
@@rexvisitor44 Look out, Mama, there's a white boat comin' up the river With a big red beacon and a flag and a man on the rail I think you'd better call John 'Cause it don't look like they're here to deliver the mail
@@MaXaNoMaLoUs Poor chap still thinks if you ask people to stop fighting wars, then they should. Like that ever worked. The reason your Dad died at Anzio is because it never did. Don't start them. If you want to end them though, sorry Roger.
Hes hardly the first to say he doesnt listen to other rock music. Funny he mentioned evh here because eddie.said he hardly listened to others either and the last album he remembered purchasing was peter gabriel
Till I immigrated to Canada, I even happened to be engaged with a FIRST NATION woman..and so that Song POWDER FINGER by Neil Young was indeed part of that history ..and he did perform it with a touch of heart.
I didn't hear him criticize anyone other than to say that he doesn't listen to their stuff or even doesn't care about it - but did say it doesn't mean they don't have skills or aren't good at what they do. That's cool. And, btw, young men should not pass judgement on what old men think or say. We all evolve and get to new places, clearer places for ourselves, not others. Just listen and say, okay.
"Saying "I'm not interested in AC/DC or Eddie Van Halen..." in a passive tone with the King's English accent is one of the snottier things I've heard in a minute...
NICE, well Roger knows what talent is for sure Neil Young). He is a GIGANTIC part of RnR history. So what he remembers rising up through the decades is all that he needs to know about it's history.
Shelter me from the powder and the monkey. Cover me with the thought that pulled his tail. Just think of a banana as one you’d never figure Would fade away like a gorilla
A man of taste who will never be given the title, "Sir." Because he doesn't want it,. To take it means you are giving your loyalty to the crown, and Roger doesn't trust his or any government that much to do so.
It's funny that Roger mentioned Eddie Van Halen and not being interested in his music or rock music in general. Eddie was the same way as he was always busy with his own music. Eddie did think Peter Gabriel's song Red Rain was brilliant as he brought it up in one of his last interviews before he passed away. Different strokes for different folks, as they say.
Difference being, EVH had an open mind and actually listened to other artists. Roger criticized 2 classic hard-rock bands without giving them a thorough listen. Had he criticized today's horrible music no one would fault him. The ears do not differ much when it comes to catchy pop/rock. Roger's logic in choosing those 2 bands makes about as much sense as his 20+ year crusade against Israel. BTW, Floyd had plenty of songs that can be categorized as Hard-Rock.
@@darrint3573 Thank you, finally someone said it. It's well documented EVH enjoyed many other artists including Allan Holdsworth, AC/DC, Cream, The Ventures, I could go on and on. EVH was a musician. Roger Waters is more of a political provocateur/message songwriter, more of a poet that happens to pluck on a guitar now and then. Note that Roger's favorite artists, 'that end of the spectrum' does not include any instrumental music. It's all message with him. Even during his time with Pink Floyd, Roger simply did not care about doing more than one take or honing a part to get it just right, whereas David Gilmour did very much. Because in Roger's mind, the actual performance of the song is secondary, it's not necessary to the message and therefore does not deserve as much attention.
Artists rarely listen to peers or what comes after, EVH loved Clapton and a few of the stuff from the 60s but he probably hated Punk, dismissed Prince, thought Heavy Metal was a joke and i doubt EVH liked Motley crue and Glam LA poser metal. I think EVH liked the grunge bands that came after all the LA poser bands trying to rip off his shredding style.
Well Eric Clapton and George Harrison dissed Neil Young . I am big fans of all three but everybody has their tastes . Personally I haven’t done Blue by Joni Mitchell because I am just not interested in her music although I like the Taxi Song . Maybe one day . Anyway I appreciate Roger’s commentary and am thankful that he ( like us all ) are getting older and more mellow and don’t feel the need to throw vitriol at people if their creation isn’t to our particular liking .
I don't like the Beatles or Rolling Stones. I don't think the world has imploded because of that. If we all liked the same thing, the world would be a much duller place to be!
.There's not his own staff after The Final Cut. He never wrote lyrics as for the four albums where he wrote lyrics for Time, Hey You, Wish you were here, Comfortably Numb, Run like a Hell Comfortably Numb actually The Wall by my opinion is PF masterpiece
Neil Young is one of the all time greats. Listened the shit out of his records from age 14-16 starting with Live From Massey Hall…… and I was born in 92’.
He's not aging well. He sounds like the couple in the Police Academy movie talking about how better they are than others because they don't watch TV, and one goes "Well, I don't even own a TV."
