How to paint a wall. This video will show the technique used when painting walls with a roller and how to get an even finish. Rolling walls is one of the quickest ways to paint interior or exterior walls. My website - how-to-paint.info
people who have never painted a wall always think, "oh, it's paint, how hard can it be? anyone can paint." but every trade has techniques and tricks that separate the professionals from the amateurs. thank you for sharing
easily the best video on the topic I've watched so far. to the point, no extra unnecessary gimmicks or tons of talking. excellent work bro! thanks a million. the world needs more guys just like you!
Ime in the trade in England. I always roll the walls first before cutting in, then that gives the walls time to dry whilst cutting in. I find that way much quicker , I also use a scuttle bucket for my paint instead of a tray.
@@darrencollier1927 sometimes I roll first as well and then apply two cut ins and finish on a roll . Whatever works aye mate as long as it looks good 👍
Thank you! Used this technique after I had roller marks. Got rid of the marks and left such an even finish in our new house! Took way less effort to apply as well.
What was once a stressful process has turned into a breeze! Thank you for your incredibly clear instructions - straight to the point and extremely helpful material.
@@MM-qb9is oh cool , i was going to go to Australia and they asked me if im coming to take jobs from Australians ha ha, im British irish American way older than 300 years in America .
thanks for all these tips! My paint job was looking terrible and these simple changes are likely going to make all the difference, including your paint roller loading video. Thanks!!! I so appreciate professionals taking the time to show their expertise - you are a really good teacher too!
I'm a journeyman painter in Boston Massachusetts, I like how you back rolled that wall nice and tight , and everything thing you said was right on . You know what your doing
Me, I watched one tutorial. Called painting like a pro before watching this gave it a go and then bam the wall came out less smooth 😭😭🤣 and it's no fun painting is hell
I've worked as a painter in the past, and have to say so far your tutorial is the best I have seen on RU-vid. Having worked with top notch painters, I am pleasantly surprised to learn some nuances that were amiss from my experience. You got a like and a new subscriber! I would like to share a tip with all of you: having worked with many decorators in the past, I learned to always remove all the wall plates and mask the electrical components. Meanwhile, clean the wall plates from any dirt, sand, prime and paint them with the same color of the wall - or cover them with the wallpaper being used, if that's the case - once the paint is dry apply 2 coats of non-yellowing sealant, scrape with a blade any excesses of paint and wait as long as possible to put them all back, that is to give the chance for the paint to cure properly. Aesthetically the finish result is incomparable, no matter how humble a room may be. As they say, the devil lies in the details!
I have noticed Aussie switches and power points are different to American ones. The new style here have a cover plate that you remove when painting and replace when finished, the switch still looks like the one in this video except it has a removable cover. Thanks so much. Now I know how a hot and windy day can affect my paint results. I didn't know this and was very upset when my paint job was streaky. I will now work in smaller sections.
So I just completed painting a mudroom using a technique like this, using an off-white with pearl sheen. When the paint dried, I had lap lines (sheen differences) galore in certain light, looking down the wall. Yikes. I think I my roller may have been too dry when laying off, or perhaps I didn't overlap my up and down strokes quite enough. This gentleman makes it look so easy! I'm back to Square One, starting over. I'm going to try an eggshell sheen this time, to reduce the light reflecting on an imperfect technique, hopefully.
Yes you most likely didn't have enough paint on the roller or maybe the nap of your roller sleeve was to short. Use around 15 mm nap, you should find this works better. Don't forget to Like, Share and Subscribe.
It didn’t make sense to me that you went back over it at the end until I saw how uniform the finish was in that bright spot in the middle of the wall. I waste never taught that part but it looks so much better after that second roll. Thanks for the info!
I bought a white paint because I’m doing make over to my house. This would be my guide to do it. Thank you so much Sir for sharing. Goodluck to me. Excited much 👍👌🙏
Amazing!! Painting takes hours for us but you did it straight to the point and easy to understand. I can hopefully paint all my bedroom today. Thank you so much!
'Bit of a demo' I don't think so. It is a clear, concise, well presented, understandable, and enjoyable and helpful video. Thanks. All the best from the UK.
Yes I have been a subscriber for a few years now. Can I ask please if you are going to anymore videos. You have been very generous on sharing your paint skills on this channel
Nice video and clear explanation. I’ve always slapped paint on in every direction and never get a great finish. I know where I’ve been going wrong now.
howtopaintinfo my dad painted my room white and it looks uneven. Now I’m thinking to go in and prime everything and repaint it myself. Also I bought satin paint for him to use. Should I use an eggshell this time? Any other tips or suggestions?
Its --What Sheen you using, how big the wall is, from what angle light is hiting it, is it winter or summer, when you put all this Together then you will know how to paint
This is amazing. Question though, how on earth you getting so much paint from one dip? I feel like I have to redip all time but I tend to use the short rollers and do tiny sections at a time. This would be so much quicker!
Have a look at this video, it might help you get more paint on the roller. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-s4BY7qPV3PM.html Don't forget to Like, Share and Subscribe.
I live in Connecticut in the USA! I've been painting for 30+years and until I went to work in Tampa Florida I discovered the 18 inch nap Rollers and they cover the best out of all the others, plus for cutting edge and trim I found out that the corona brand is best for smooth strokes and coverage. Just to let you know!
It’s best practice to take off the fittings e.g. power point faceplate as you’ll always hit the us edge (no matter how ‘pro’ you are, don’t sidestep this!) and you’ll notice in this video the different texture between the rest of the wall and close to the edge of the fitting. If you don’t care for the quality because it’s a rental, then that’s a different story. :)
Here in Australia the old power points like in this video if removed will be hanging by wires so you would still need to cut around but it could look a little neater or just be annoying because power point is now hanging down the wall. Generally power points shouldn't be touch by any one except an electrician, if something was to go wrong and a painter had removed power point then they would be liable for any damages. Modern day electrical sockets have a removable cover but you still need to cut around them like I have in this video. The good part is you don't need to worry about cutting in perfectly as the cover hides all the edges.. Don't forget to Like, Share and Subscribe.
Not only that, if you ever replace the faceplates with a different (small) size, you'll have painted all the way up to the electrical box instead of up to the faceplate itself.
Good video but you should remove the power outlet covers before painting. It’s a lot easier, you can paint right up to the metal, and in the future when the outlets are replaced the standard for the cover size may be smaller, meaning you’ll have to repaint the wall if you didn’t remove them
Outlets here in Australia are different to other countries, we do have a cover plate on the new style of outlets but the outlet is still screwed firm to the wall. We could remove it but the wires are connected to it and it would only hang down the wall. Generally for insurance purposes we do not play with them. The one in this video is and older style with no cover plate. Don't forget to Like, Share and Subscribe.
never fail this technique , i learn a lot from you SIR , i did a couple project in my work and every body like how nice and perfect is the paint work ,thanks lot 💯
I do cut in the entire houses before I roll, light colours are fine to be done this way but some darker colours would need to be done wall by wall. Don't forget to Like, Share and Subscribe.
This is the Best Technique to use and definitely very well explained/demonstrated. I needed this video for reassurance. At the time before starting my project(s), I couldn't find anything like this online or RU-vid. I did it like this anyway using prior experience. I'm so glad these are the exact steps you demonstrated, definitely reassuring.

I remember how lovely it was to use a roller first time. It was distemper and a brush when I watched my dad back in thev1950s. Then in the UK we papered the walls. That's a whole other thing.
As always great techniques I am actually going to start painting my walls tomorrow everything has already been cut in few days ago though new paint added is not noticable, paint I am using is called Behr marquees ultra semi gloss one coat & it dries very fast so have to work fast with it or paint will start wrinkling temperature will also be in low 80's tomorrow so may have to get an early start on it. Thank's for another great video👍
