Hi Joe! I've been following your channel for a while, and I do love it, but this is the first time I felt the need to leave a comment. I lived in the UK for 7 years (not anymore) and, although I have a good understanding of English, I've always struggled with newspapers!! I wish I had seen this video years ago hahaha (the same way I wish I had your videos when I was learning English!) 😅 Please do more videos like this 🙏 And really well done on this channel, I've recommended it to all my Italian friends and relatives who want to learn English, you're the absolute best ❤❤

Thank you Joe! I find this video extremely interesting, and your tips and introductory notes about the world of the British press so punctual and helpful as an old sailor advice would be for anybody who might fancy going a little further from the "comfort zone" of written texts expressly designed for foreign learners and try to face the "open sea" of "first hand" written English. It also taught me some useful expressions such as "political stance".

Thanks for this interesting video about all the different kind of English newspapers. Love reading the press review in the morning (sport pages eheh ). I noticed that papers talk a lot about sports like cricket ,rugby and golf!!! I like reading the ads as well. I used to take a look at some mags. The newspapers are a way to learn English, to stay up to date and to know the customs and traditions of the country. Thanks :))

Bellissima "puntata", Joe! E' verissimo, quando all'estero mi è capitato di dare un'occhiata a tabloid come il Sun facevo spesso fatica, nonostante il mio vocabolario sia abbastanza ricco. Un altro esempio che mi riguarda da vicino riguarda una rivista, Your Sinclair, di cui comprai una copia da bambino (era una rivista dedicata allo ZX Spectrum/Sinclair). Rivista di videogiochi in cui i giochi di parole si sprecavano :D

Very interesting video! It's nice the expression "take it with the pinch of salt", in Italian it is "prendere con le pinze" o "prendere con le molle", things with the same shape of fingers when you pinch salt to take a little bit 🙂

Great video. I’ve been living in UK for a while many years ago, and so I was quite confused at first for the different types of journals available. I end up reading the guarding & the times. Tabloids remained impossible to understand from any point of view.

Hello there Jo, Most interesting topic...thank you. I personally don't read newspapers although the English press it's interesting and outlandish in their styles as you explained. I love multiple-meaning words and the technique of using a pun or paronomasia for funny, clever writing. Some time ago I came across this sentence " I was walking past a farm and a sign read: Duck, eggs! I thought "That's an unnecessary comma" then it hit me.

When you speak it's all easy to understand although the lesson wasn't simple for me. I wonder how many people still buy newspapers. When I was young it was normal to see people walking with the newspaper under their arm or reading it sitting in the underground or bus etc. It was easy to know their political stance 😁 Nowadays this scenario is rare.
