Robert explains the origions of the sailors splicing fid in the 18th and 19th century. He also discusses design evolutions of fids and which ones he has in his tool box. Features for safety and use for fancy knot work in small line are demostrated. In Part 2, Robert demonstrated specialty fids used for decorative knotting and braiding in leather. There is nothing better than a good quality fid that fits snuggly in your hand.

Thanks for the lesson. Inspires me to make do some rope work instead of whittling.

Hi, great video. The tool that you introduce at 5:29 looks like it may by a burnisher which are used for rolling an edge on a card scraper for use in woodwork finishing. Great multi use tool. Thanks.

Just found a very old brass fid (I think) metal detecting Waquoit Bay, about 6" long with a small hole thru it near the head, which is tapered too. I have a photo of it too.

I want to thank you for introducing me to knotting. I bought your dvd years ago and I have had a great time learning and doing knotting. Are u going to ever do a dvd on decorating bottles and jugs?
