I have a regular 17 and the 17 Pro with GPS. Mine are both clean radios, after watching videos regarding the 17's after taken apart, there is really no telling which revisions I have unless I just go look at the boards. I have hurt some peoples feeling with those two radios and a good antenna.

Yeah, My favorite is having a working QSO and then telling them I'm using their most hated radio... and then all the sudden they can't hear me and it doesn't work... while they are still able to argue with me. What a weird world we live in.

Ya the writing on the box was a way for them to make sure they sent you the tuned up checked n rechecked modlel, the one most of us won't be getting. 😂

I have several Feng radios. They all perform as related to their cost, go figure. I use them with my GMRS license and when working in the rough. If one gets lost or trashed, I will not cry. Hmm, frequent factory resets improves performance and manual programming works better than Chirp. Just my story, thanks and 73, KF0NNQ.

@@victorcharlie7491 Mine don't do well on duplex, bought on Amazon, but work well enough on simplex. Best function is if one is lost or trashed.... They were my starter radios. 73.

It's a good looking radio but in true Boof-Wang fashion it splatters all over the place. It's a shame because I was digging the USB C charging and the overall look of the radio but I will have to stick with my current HT for a while longer. Love the channel and the content. 73's

that ok. don't like the 2nd 2 meter harmonic. I have a clean Talkpod A36 like Hayden and K8MRD got. that has wide receive. so that Baofeng will be a pass for me. but interested in the tri band like that . or I may get the Anytone HT tri band . The hack for the Talkpod A36 makes it TX on 220 Mhz. so that a tri band ? TX power drops but works. 73's

For an already cheap direct-conversion radio, how much more engineering, components and manufacturing costs would it take to get a cleaner signal within spec? I guess what I'm thinking is that they have a willing market that would likely tolerate an extra $5 to $15 per radio for a cleaner signal. Doesn't even have to be perfect, just within spec. I recently won an Icom T-10 and it's a direct conversion dual-band HT. Absolutely nothing special about it compared to a similarly featured `Feng. It could likely be argued the `Feng's have a better feature set, screen, etc. Of course, Icom made sure the T-10 is within spec, but the street price is also $240. If Baofeng cleaned up their signal to where it was on par with the YaeComWood consortium, would it be worth (IDK) $50? That's only $20 over current price point for a modicum of filtering. Or maybe that filtering is not as cheap as I'm guessing?

I'm with you on this one... its not even something that would cost more, its just that they chose the wrong values for the filter network... I don't think they know, and the bottom line (sales/profit) is showing that it doesn't matter. Even if they raised the price, they are the bottom price tier, so they would still not have any competition. Raise it up to $30 if it helps... but its apathy AND ignorance combined with good sales numbers.

The tidradio TD-H3 is a much better radio, with Bluetooth and more frequencies and features for roughly the same price

I agree with you in spirit... but I'll add that baofeng has been making "cheap HTs" and selling millions of them. They /should/ now have enough profits to just do a tiny bit better. They've done it before (made a clean radio), they've seen the feedback... I believe its our mission to do better than we did yesterday.

A dirty radio is a bad radio as you can't really use it without worrying about breaking the rules or add some filters by yourself.

The external filters cost more than the radio! (The internal filters are pennies though)

If the FCC cared, they would not let the market be flooded with these radios. Baofang doesn't care and the FCC doesn't care. A small percentage of hams are the only ones that seem to care.
