This video will hopefully help answer some questions that you may have in regards to what an AA (Alcoholics Anonymous) or NA (Narcotics Anonymous) meeting is like. Some details about general meeting format is explained in the video, and I'm here to help answer any other questions that you may have that I didn't cover.

I'm going to my first meeting tonight. Weather I get the courage to actually walk in the building is a different story.

I am an alcoholic. I have been pretty lucky in life because I still have my health, home, auto, occupation and money to do most of the things that I want. I began attending local AA meetings to see if I could get some help. There were folks there that told their personal story. A few of them explained how they lost their family, friends, job, home and had the opportunity to spend years in state prison. Others had lost everything and told of being in ICU when they woke up not aware that the world was still turning. Many people whose family would throw rocks if they were seen coming that direction. There are mothers whose children have been taken away by the Child Protective Agency. The stories go on and on...

thank you for this video. I have to go to a meeting for my master's degree course and was nervous to walk in as an outsider. You settled those nerves for me.

I have been sober almost 1 year and have only missed one meeting. There are people that discount and talk down on A.A. saying it's brainwashing and that the steps are to be strictly followed and are the law to staying sober, but that's not the case. The 12 steps are good steps to follow and in my case and others I have chatted with, have adapted them to our own lives and how we can refer back to them as a guide to staying sober and sometimes finding ourselves doing, say, step 8 or falling back on step 3 as reminders. I found myself taking moral inventory or making amends with people I have hurt long before and after the steps have been discussed. I love going to meetings and in NO WAY do I think they are law or brainwashing, but a good way to find and keep sobriety. I hope all who need or want to be sober, not be intimidated or scared to walk thru the door for the first time. Come on in! Thanks for this video and I look forward to another 24 hours!

This has been really helpful, thanks. I am attending my first meeting tonight and until today I felt really confident about going, then this morning I started thinking of all the reasons in the world to put it off because I just had no idea what I was going to say, and suddenly felt really nervous. You've put my mind at ease a bit though, so thanks...and I will go.

Roger Ebert, the film critic, swore by AA. If you want to read his piece on it, it's very moving. On the other hand, the only recovering alcoholic I've known, never shut up about his drinking. Never. It was virtually his only topic of conversation. Drove me crazy. He just loved to talk about how much he missed drinking. I was happy for him, that he did not die, but sometimes wished he would start up again, and shut up about it. Unfortunately, I did put up with it. Because he was my supervisor, and had to work closely with him, for this paint contractor. Could not wait for that summer to end.
