What's Causing Your Arm Numbness?

If you wake up one day with sudden numbness or weakness down your arm, you’re one panicked phone call away from the ER. However, these one-sided upper limb complaints are all too common within my clinic, and usually of an unserious nature.
A basic understanding of upper limb anatomy and pathology is all that’s needed to help calm the concerns of heart attacks or other serious conditions. And that’s what we’ll be going through today!

About 1-2 times per year, I experience a sudden loss of feeling in BOTH arms at exactly the same place, and the feeling like I'll faint. Sometimes burning in my neck. Then tingles in my face and fingers for awhile. Doctors cannot figure it out. I've been told it's most likely a panic attack. Yesterday this happened again, several times throughout the day, after over a year of it not occurring. Both arms went limp and I almost fainted. 😞 Whew!! ...If I'm ever in the Ontario area I may book an appointment with you. Otherwise, it's scary when this occurs and not knowing why it occurs. Thank you for a good video explaining the nerves and some basics we should understand.

Happy to have helped! I am sorry that you are dealing with this on and off complaint. Come in for a visit if you ever are in Ontario and we can take a full history. While it doesn’t sound like something necessarily MSK, I am happy to provide second opinions or screenings.

I don't have numbness but cold sensation all way down from shoulder to fingers, besides shoulder pain it's annoying

@@DavidHernandez-cr8wz Hi David - thank you for your comment & sorry this has been annoying you :/ Cold sensation in our limbs can be indicative of an arterial (vascular) compromise. In the case of cold sensation beginning in the shoulder and spanning to your fingers, "Vascular Thoracic Outlet Syndrome" comes to mind (I briefly mention TOS as an "exception" within this video, but that's referring to Neurogenic TOS). Ofcourse, it is poor form to offer advice over the internet based off a very limited patient history (and no exam). I would highly recommend checking in with a health care provider that you trust for a full history and physical examination - they will be able to provide you a much more confident answer (and you can also ask them whether they believe this to be Vascular TOS as well)!

I have a lot of back pain since a child severe anxiety and panic attacks but the last year I was having trouble turning my neck figured it was just my back … but the last several months my arms feel so weak and into my hands and wrists they started going numb at night my whole arm but now it’s throughout the day also … I saw a chiropractor and Orthapedic surgeon both said it was due to tight muscles but my neck hurts all the time. I tried a massage and it actually made it worse when my arm is bent I get pain in my hands on both sides and my ring finger and pinky finger almost like a burning. What can you recommend please I’m in such pain and with my anxiety I fear all sorts of things

Hi Dnaam, I am very sorry that this is happening to you. It can be very frustrating when you feel that something is not "right" with your situation, but others do not seem to be able to pick up on it. If you live within southern Ontario, I would be happy to examine you myself. Otherwise, I could not offer any conclusive advice regarding your condition through the internet alone. What I would encourage you to do is to CONTINUE SEEKING MORE OPINIONS. While excessive neck/muscle hypertonicity can be a cause for arm and nerve symptoms, it is not always the case. If you feel something is not right, keep seeking other professionals who specialize in musculoskeletal care. I would begin with a different evidence-based chiropractor and explain all of this to them. Hopefully they should be able to help you out themselves, or point you in a more appropriate direction.

Look up Reynauds syndrome caused by emotional stress results in numb and burning hand/fingers.

A quick question. I have radial nerve damage. Why - this is the best guess. I have long, thin arms. They used to be quite weak. I built them way up through weights and yes, hitting a heavy bag. The before and after is dramatic. Meanwhile I played a lot of acoustic guitar. An acoustic is wider than an armpit. Decades of acoustic guitar pressure against the armpit caused, it's believed, this radial nerve damage. I was told some radial nerves are merely injured but will over time recover. Some are in some way, dead. I'm the latter. So numbness/tinging in three of four right hand fingers. I am told that surgery, only 49% successful may be an option. No chiropractor, M.D. specialist, PT or masseuse believes they can help me. The surgeons say surgery probably won't work. Any ideas? Thanks.

Tough to say - keep in mind, any thoughts I type out here should not be considered medical advice (given that it is not possible to examine you). With that said... You mention numbness, but no loss of "function". Do you still have full mobility of your arm? If not, I'd considering looking into "NMES" (Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation). This is a method of rehab that initially may be used in cases of palsy (nerve damage) or severe soft-tissue damage that applies electrical stimulation simultaneously while the patient attempts to engage a target muscle innervated by the electrically-stimulated nerve. This is how stroke-survivors begin their rehab plan, and can help to rebuild the target pathway from brain to nerve to muscle, when being able to engage the muscle/nerve without assistance is not possible.

If numbness is the sole issue, I would instead consider potential radial nerve flossing/gliding. This can help to free up any potential adhesions or "pinching" that may have built up within your soft tissues (fascia) surrounding your radial nerve in your armpit. As always, seek other opinions. I emphasize this a lot of my channel, but you have a right to as many as you want.

@@DrAdamCSolis thank you very much for your thoughtful replies. I don't play guitar quite as well as I used to before this injury, and my squeeze strength is substantially reduced, but other than that there's no loss of function per se. I'll look into the various remedies you suggest; thanks again.

Arm numbness is good, because when you are lying in bed it feels like someone else is doing it.
