I feel like Gilbert at the beginning is stunted. He can't grow because he has so many responsibilities holding him down. Becky is the polar opposite and has no responsibilities. Gilbert's views are stark and honest. He loves his family and is devoted to them... while at the same time he loathes them for keeping him trapped. It's a real typical situation for many people. I don't think Gilbert minds Arnie. He loves him. At the same time, when you have someone in your family like Arnie it can be exhausting and draining. This is one of the best movies adapted from a novel, ever!

The weight of the mother (emotionally and physically) was keeping her children stuck in that town.

This was Leonardo DiCaprio's 4th movie, but it was the one that made him famous (his breakthrough). His first movie was Critters 3. Funnily, a lot of big actors' first movies are horror movies. Johnny Depp's first movie was A Nightmare on Elm Street.

One thing you have to remember is that their mother was an addict. Food addiction is probably worse than others because you have to eat. Any other addiction can be stopped by not using the product. She didn't intentionally keep her children stuck, for lack of a better word. She loved them, but she didn't love herself.

I love this movie, one of my favourite Johnny Depp and Leo movies. I would love to see you react to a movie called Mermaids(it’s not really about mermaids though lol) it has Winona Ryder and Cher and Christina Ricci in it, it’s a really great movie and it’s very underrated much like this movie and Mask is too

I think you could get away with burning down your own house out in the middle of nowhere like that in the country but not in like a suburb, it would piss your neighbors off with all the smoke and I'm pretty sure they would call the fire department on you before you could successfully burn down the house with your deceased mum inside. Lol Great reaction and analysis as always! 👍

When filming this movie, johnny Depp had a very hard time because of how many scenes there are about making fun of the mothers weight, and he said that she was one of the nicest people he ever met So he hated doing the fat jokes

This is one of my favorite movies. There is a lot of love, sadness, emotion and great wistfulness. And every performance is astonishing, right down to the most minor of characters. Very real, almost to the point it seemed it wasn’t fiction, but close to a documentary. Outstanding.

A Johnny Depp movie made by Tim Burton that I really enjoyed is Edward Scissorhands. If you haven't seen This Boys Life with Leo DiCaprio and Robert Dinero or Basketball Diaries, I highly recommend them.

At the end when you questioned if they were going to burn down the house. I thought you were about to ask if it was legal to burn down your house with your deceased Mom still inside. Because that’s what they actually did. Gilbert and his sisters didn’t want her to become a spectacle. Gilbert didn’t want her humiliated.

Well you see ye got it all wrong. Not everyone who is as big as Darlene in this film is someone who has just left herself or himself go and the eating habit is not always the Case. My aunt Cheryl on my mom's side was as big as the woman in this movie And it was Because of a problem with her body her body swelled out really big and there was nothing the Dr's could do she passed away 💔 like that.

I don’t comments lot of videos but I have to say that you were spot on with what I was thinking after watching the movie. I wanted to watch the movie because I’m in a similar situation where I feel like the responsibilities of supporting a family are keeping me from enjoying my own personal life. I came to realize that I’m not the only one but it still reached home nevertheless. I agree with what you said about “life gives you a set of cards whether you like them or not. Life will still go on anyways”.. you caught other details about the movie that I didn’t think about like burning the house down. Anyways this was a great review.. really good movie and keep up the good work! 👍

I have always really loved this movie. The performances were all so great. Well, mostly. And I did wonder about that too. I am assuming people would believe that she died of natural causes, given her large size. But they would still have to explain the whole arson thing. Maybe the local authorities would just let it slide due to their circumstances? Oh well, still a great film.

I thought the same. They weren't likely to charge them with arson given the situation and the motivation behind the fire.

I went to see this film in the theater when it first came out (in 1993) for two reasons - the director (Lasse Hallström) and Johnny Depp. Johnny was a young up-and-coming actor, and there was a big buzz around him. And as for Lasse Hallström - a few years earlier, I saw his film "My Life As A Dog" (1985). When you said that the mother had an "eating problem", it reminded me of the character in "My Life As A Dog" who has a "drinking problem." I highly recommend the film - check it out when you can. The character of Arnie - I did not know of Leonardo DiCaprio's earlier acting career - I thought he stole the show. And one final comment about the film -- whenever I go to a large shopping mall now - I think of the scene where Gilbert had to walk in the mall, past those doors - priceless.

Such an amazing review in the end. Of course, i love deep emotional movies like this, due to there being so much to ponder over, sigh draining yes; i keep bringing it up cause i find it interesting not anything else, but i hear you in the review and never thought you sounded low energy, idky i just didnt see that. it may have been the case in reality but it came off to me like you had been completely idk how to word it but it looked like you were refreshed to me lol idky great reaction of course. Cant wait for more!

Almost kind of forgot what a fantastic movie this was. Thanks for bringing it back! As a fan of Leonardo Dicaprio, you may be interested to know there is a theory among a few of my friends and I that this film is actually the reason he was snubbed by the Academy for so long. I know it sounds unlikely on the surface, and my explanation is a little complicated, so please bear with me: It goes without saying that learning disabilities are a touchy subject for a lot of people. Not only it is incredibly difficult to play a part like this convincingly for even the most talented of actors, it is also more or less universally considered obscene to even try it. For an ESTABLISHED actor it's the equivalant of career suicide. Robert Downey Jr. has a rather twisted but insightful monologue about this in TROPIC THUNDER. To summarize, Tom Hanks in FORREST GUMP and Dustin Hoffman in RAINMAN are deliberately drawn exceptions to this rule, as their respective characters are both incredibly competent in spite of their afflictions, and are therefore far more relatable to most audiences (as is reflected by the overwhelming popularity of these films and performances). Consequently, by OBJECTIVELY DESTROYING this role before anyone knew who he was while, at the same time, going on to enjoy extraordinary success and acclaim for his abilities, Dicaprio unwittingly shone a spotlight (as it were) on the Academy and its increasingly political nature (the term "oscar bait" was coined to describe films which, while fulfilling the required political criteria are, in fact, considered substandard films by most critics and viewers). And he's been paying for it ever since in the form of a childish vendetta by simple-minded, populatiry-obsessed "cool kids" in a vulgar abuse of professional position. My humble opinion: never in the history of cinema has an actor played a role like this so brilliantly and it's very likely that none ever will. The tragedy of this, of course, is that most people (with the exception of the most dedicated film/acting students and Dicaprio fans) aren't even aware that this film exists. P.S. If you're looking for a toure-de-force by Johnny Depp, I suggest his portrayal of the eccentric journalist Hunter S. Thompson in FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS. If you look up video of the man himself (there's plenty of it out there) and then watch and compare Depp's performance, it will BLOW YOUR MIIND. Another dangerously underrated pretty boy. ;)

@@KurticeYZreacts LMFAO. Yeah, the entie third act of that movie is pretty terrifying, with th execption of the very end. Very strange film about a very strange guy. But Depp actually lived with him for several months so he could get his mannerisms down. I'm sure it's just as difficult to play a genius as it is to go "full r*tard". LOL. RIP Hunter. But imo, these kinds of performances are the reason they invented acting awards, not SAVNG PRIVATE RYAN or BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN. The fact that it's fun and edgy doesn't made it bad. Some people should know better, especially when it's why they're getting paid.

@@KurticeYZreacts Yeah, I get stoned a lot. I think it takes something really special to scar me. lol. SAVING PRIVATE RYAN's probably a bad example. All things considered, it WAS a pretty great film. And I've never been in combat so I won't lower myself by disputing the realism but, personally, I'd rather watch APOCALYPSE NOW or THE DEER HUNTER any day. Come to think of it, I see your point. LOL.
